Procedure For Buttering
Procedure For Buttering
1.1. This procedure is applied to recover the length of material such as plate, beam or
pipe, which are due to accidently improper cutting.
1.2. This procedure is also applied to recover the surfaces of plates, beams and pipes,
which defected due to accidenly improper cutting or gouging.

3.0. Preheating.
When there found that the gap for welding is wider than specified by WPS, NCR shall be
issued to find the disposition for buttering. Buttering is applied when width of gap is not
wider 15mm than the specified gap (EEMUA 158 paragraph 5.2.7). No buttering performed
without approval of PT. Saipem Indonesia or BP Berau Ltd as Clients. The sequences of
buttering as follow :
4.1. Grind the area for buttering to a smooth surface.
4.2. Perform preheating by using rose burner hand held oxy-propane torch Liquid

from the edge of the bevel on each side or 3 times the thickness whichever is the
greater.
4.3. Perform welding by using SMAW process to exceed the original surface, with
sequence of deposition as following :
4.4. Clean the weld then grind the excess weld to the flush original surface.
4.5. Perform visual inspection to ensure no defective and to ascertain completion of the
buttering.
4.6. Perform NDE by using MPI.
0 4.7. For the joints that shall receive UT or RT after welding, the butter shall be UT or RT
inspected.

Saipem Indonesia or BP Berau Ltd as Clients. The sequences of buttering as follow :
5.1. QC inspector shall mark each area which is considered as defect due to improper
cutting or gouging.
5.2. Grind the damaged area to a smooth groove and prepare wide enough to permit
access for welding.
5.3. Perform preheating by using rose burner hand held oxy-propane torch Liquid
Propane Gas (LPG) burner. Measurement of minimum temperature at least 75 mm
from the edge of the groove on each side or 3 times the thickness whichever is the
grater.
5.4. Weld the groove by using SMAW process to exceed the original surface, with
sequence of weld deposition as following :
6.0. Documentation.
All buttering shall be recorded and marked on the material with clearly identification
(position, dimension, area, welder stamp and applied WPS).
