 The materials are intended for grade 10 students.


2. AIMS

2B) what are the aims of the materials?


The aims of the materials are:
 Speaking
Deal with general situations of oral communication. Enter unprepared into conversation on
topics that are familiar, of personal interest or pertinent to everyday life (e.g. family, hobbies,
work, travel and current events);
 Listening
Understand the main points of clear standard speech on familiar matters regularly
encountered in work, school, leisure (songs, local and traditional stories), and understand the
main point of many radio or TV programmes on current affairs or topics of personal or
professional interest when the delivery is relatively slow and clear;
 Reading
Understand texts that consist mainly of high frequency every day and job related language.
Understand the facts, description of events, feelings and wishes in personal letters, simple poems and
stories (local and traditional);
 Writing
Write simple connected texts on topics that are familiar or of personal interest. Write personal
letters describing experiences and impressions. Write invitations, business letters and simple
stories.

public and academic situations and able to pick out facts and may involve opinions,
attitudes, moods and wishes.

Evaluating the contents

Unit 1:

Lesson 1: Sustainable and subsistence farming

Firstly, the group appreciated the vocabulary items selected for this content. It’s easy to
understand and adequate for the level of the students being dealt with. Secondly, it is also
worth to mention the inclusion of the four language skills in the activities, it’s positive. And
finally, the grammar points selected for the lesson is also good.

Lesson 2: Recycling resources for sustainable development

This lesson is characterized by the four language skills, being stressed the speaking and
listening. It also presents a dialogue, to serve as an input for the students. Regarding the
language and grammar focus used are suitable.

Lesson 3: Pesticides and fertilizers

The lesson presents a text as input; however, it is apparently long which may be boring for
students. The activities are good for the students mainly the writing ones, where we can find
fill in the gaps and free writing. There is a listening activity which is also very good for
students.

Lesson 4: Local ownership and productivity

The grammar focus in this lesson is very good for the students. Additionally, the learning
skills are important to make part of each lesson so that students get the chance to practice
them in class. And they are presented as well in this lesson, that is also good. The vocabulary
itself, matches with the purpose of the lesson.

Unit 2

Lesson 1 and 2: Can tourism benefit the environment?

The activities of this lesson are productive in the way that they include all the learning skills,
emphasising the speaking and writing skill. It also presents a dialogue and two texts as an
input and the vocabulary selected is also suitable for the level of the students. Regarding the
language

Lesson 3: Conserve and win!

The input text for this lesson is so long if one takes into account the level of the students we
are dealing with. However, its vocabulary is subject related and easy to be understood by the
learners. There is an integration of the learning skills which is quite good for the students. It
also presents a suitable grammar point.

Lesson 4: community action

The first text input is not long; students may find it enjoyable. Its vocabulary is good for their
level and the grammar focus selected in this lesson is also good. The content itself is
important for the students. The second and third text are also good and the grammar focus is
good.

Lesson 5: Tourism = Gains for Mozambique

The activities included in this lesson integrate the four language skills. The writing activity is
the most emphasised. It presents a comprehensible vocabulary and grammar focus for the
level of the students.

Unit 3

Lesson 1: A means of transportation?

The most noticeable thing in this lesson is the grammar point. It is of a great importance once
it goes along with the content of the lesson. The text brings a kind of vocabulary which is a
bit confusing for the students, but it is good as long as it’s well explained by the teacher. It’s
a content which students are familiar with. Its exercises include the four language skills and
that’s really good for students.

Lesson 2 and 3: Transportation and the economy

The activities included in this lesson are productive for the students because they include the
four language skills so that students have much more practice on them. The lesson presents
an input which is good and the vocabulary selected is appropriate for the content. Finally, the
language point covered on, is very good as well.
Lesson 4: Communications: worldwide revolution

The lesson has a dialogue as an input and its content is of an importance aspect because it
deals with ongoing worldwide development. The language point is okay for the students, if
one takes into account their level. The activities are productive for the students, because they
include the four language skills.

Lesson 5: The Box: friend or foe?

This lesson holds a rich productive grammar point. It presents a text which serves as an input
and it is a dialogue. Its activities are important because students can practice the language
skills in the class with teacher’s help. The language used for the content is suitable for the
students too.

Unit 4:

Lesson 1: Innovation, invention and discovery

This lesson presents a texts input with an important content for the students. And the
language point selected is also suitable for the level of the students. It presents exercises
which include the four language skills. And the vocabulary used in this lesson reflects the
present time.

Lesson 2: Buy me a cell phone or a microwave?

The lesson has an input text which is a dialogue, though long. With the grammar point it
presents, it possible that students don’t find it difficult to master it. It also has activities that
cover on the four language skills and that is good for students.

Lesson 3: New technologies for a better life

In this lesson, the grammar point matches with the content of the lesson. It presents input
where technology is explained. The exercises are productive for students, because they can
practice them in class. And the vocabulary selected for this lesson is very important for the
students because they will need it for their daily communication.

Lesson 4: Technology and community development


The activities included in this lesson are suitable for the level of the students, once it is
possible to find the four language skills which students can practise in class. It is a lesson
which should be taught using different teaching aids. It carries a good vocabulary.

Unit 5

Lesson 1 and 2: doing business for development

The input which this lesson carries is good for the students, as they have to know the
importance of doing business. The activities that are presented here are good, unless the fact
that no listening activity has been included in. The vocabulary is suitable for the students and
it is easy understand and make use of it.

Lesson 3 and 4: Formal and informal business?

Firstly, it is important to stress that the inclusion of the language skills in the exercises is
positive. The lesson carries a rich and understandable vocabulary for the level of the students
being dealt with. Its dialogues are also good for the students. And finally, the language point
is suitable.

Lesson 5: Does borrowing mean being in debt?

The finance vocabulary included here is very good for the students. Apart from the
vocabulary, we can also find the input texts which also play an important role in the
explanation of the content. The activities are good, though no speaking activity has been
included.

Lesson 6: Processing for profit

Again, the vocabulary for this lesson is helpful and easy to be understood by the students
with help of the teacher. Its text is enjoyable and short. The activities of this lesson
productive because writing is more stressed than others. Apart from that, the language point
is also suitable for the students.

Lesson 7: Production for export

The grammar point and the language used presented in this lesson, are suitable. Regarding the
activities of the lesson are really productive for the students. They include the language skills,
but without speaking. The text is good because it carries good vocabulary for the students.
Unit 6:

Lesson 1 and 2: Mozambique and world organisations

It brings a series of practical exercises for the students which is very good. Among the
exercises, the language skills are also included in there. The lesson carries a good input,
because students need to know about the organisations which Mozambique makes part of.
The language itself is also suitable for the students.

lesson 3: Doing business in the SADC region

This lesson carries again a series of activities for the students. They include the language
skills so that students have much practise. The language point is important for the students
and the vocabulary is understandable as well. It also presents informative texts which is very
good for the students.

Lesson 4 and 5: Trading connections

The lesson carries a vocabulary that is helpful for the students and it is also easy to
comprehend. The activities included in this lesson are productive, mainly for the writing
activity. It has a good language focus, taking into account the level of the students. And
finally, it has good text inputs.

Lesson 6: an international trade fair

It carries a communicative activity, which involves students’ speaking time, with a dialogue.
Apart from the speaking activity, it also includes other language skills. The lesson carries a
good vocabulary for the students. And the language point covered on, is important for the
students.

Lesson 7: Diplomatic affairs

The input that this lesson carries, in suitable for the level of the students although it is long
and might be boring for the students. The activities selected are productive, mainly the
writing activity is the one more focused on. It also brings a subject related vocabulary for the
students.

Unit 7

Lesson 1 and 2: Human Rights


The activities selected for this lesson are productive if we look at the level of the students we
are dealing with, mainly writing is the most emphasised. The vocabulary is also very good for
the students. The text input selected for this lesson is very much important, but the fact that it
is too long, might not let students happy. Its language focus is very important for the students
too.

Lesson 3 and 4: My right, your right

Firstly, the vocabulary is good for this lesson and for the students. It includes good activities
for practise. Within the activities we can find the four language skills and that is very good.
Its texts are also good for the level of the students being dealt with, though long. And finally,
the language point covered on, is quite good for the students.

Lesson 5 and 6: Women in Mozambican society

Speaking activities are more focused in this lesson, which is good for the students. Apart
from the speaking activities, there have been included other language skills to help students
develop their skills. The input presented in this lesson is quite important for the students,
however, it is very long and students may feel tired reading it.

Lesson 7: The victims? Children!

It is a lesson rich of activities that include the language skills. The lesson also carries a very
good vocabulary for the students. The lesson brings also good texts for the students and the
language point selected for it, is suitable for the level of the students.

Lesson 8: Domestic violence

It is a very important topic for the students. It is pertinent that students know about the
violence and this lesson presents it with a clear and easy vocabulary. It’s also a lesson which
could be taught with different teaching aids. Mainly for the listening activity selected for the
students. The language point is very clear too.

Lesson 9: Living and working together

This lesson is rich in activities. It selects good activities for the students and its text inputs are
also very important for the level of the students. The vocabulary selected for the lesson,
matches with the content of the lesson and finally, the grammar focus, is good for the
students.
Unit 8

Lesson 1 and 2: Life after school

The lesson plays an important role in the students’ learning process, it aims to prepare
students to start following their dreams soon after they finish school. The vocabulary selected
for the lesson is helpful for the students. And the activities selected are practical, as we are
dealing much speaking, writing and reading. It covers present aspects and that is very
important for the students.

Lesson 3 and 4: Finding out about professions

The dialogue present in this lesson is helpful for the students because they can practise much
speaking during classes. It carries a good and easy vocabulary for the level of the students
being dealt with. The activities are very practical for students and the language focus is also
important for them.

Lesson 5: Pursuing a career

It is a lesson which brings much motivation and energy for students. It shifts students from
the imaginary to the real world. The lesson carries good and practical activities for the level
of the students and the language point is very important for students as well. The lesson
presents a text as input with a clear language and vocabulary.

Lesson 6 and 7: Opportunities in your community

The lesson is very rich in exercises for the students and it gives all the language skills for
practice. It is a lesson which encourages students to go on with their dreams. It also carries a
good vocabulary and a very short text for input. It’s a lesson that can be performed with
different teaching aids as well.
