Regulations
The UJ's educational policy, General RegulationS and Faculty Regulations are applicable and are
available for scrutiny at the faculty office.
Give special attention to the following rules stipulated in the Faculty Regulations.
• 6.1.2 No student may attend lectures or any contact sessions in a module, receive study
material or supervision, have access to any electronic study material or sources, or be
assessed in a module if he/she is not a registered student at the UJ for the relevant Module
for the academic semester/year concerned.
• 6.1.3 No assessment result is official if a student was not registered for a module in the
specific academic year.
• 6.1.4 Any student who is not registered for a relevant module and is present in an assessment
venue with the intention of taking part in the assessment is guilty of fraud and may face
disciplinary procedures or legal action.

Plagiarism
Dishonesty and plagiarism are not tolerated and will be punished. Plagiarism is the verbatim (word-
for-word) use of another's work and presenting it as if it were one's own.
It is important to acknowledge any thoughts, ideas and information which are not your own. It is also
important to use a standard form of referencing to provide all relevant information that will help any
person who may be interested to read further about the information. As a result, you need to keep
an accurate record of collecting your data.
• You will be required to cite your source(s), especially when referring to an item within your
text. You are also required to indicate the reference where the citation can be found at the
end of your work.
• The different departments within the University may require you to use a particular (or
different) way of citation. It is therefore important for you to enquire and adhere to the
requirements set by your departments.
• The proper procedures are laid down by the University and the Faculty responsible for
strategies that prevent, monitor and handle acts of plagiarism.
Copyright issues are handled in accordance with DALRO principles and procedures.
Grievance procedure
A student with a grievance must follow the Faculty's grievance procedure. If the student experiences
any problems in this Module, please discuss the problem with the following persons in the given
order.
• Lecturer
Sick tests
In the event that a student misses a test due to illness, the student must communicate this to the
secretary of the Department as soon as possible. The circumstances will be assessed by a panel
that will decide whether the student can be granted the sick test.
9
• Illness or other medical reasons. A genuine doctor's certificate must be presented. A one-
day ill health certificate is not accepted
The sick test will be written on the dates that will be announced by the panel in due course.
Class attendance
Lecturing time is of the essence, and punctuality is, therefore, vital. To ensure that time is used
optimally, students must be in class ready before the start of each lecture session.
1. Lecture Notes
2. Structural Analysis fifth edition by Aslam Kassimali; Structural Analysis by RC Hibbeler
Students are advised to visit the library to obtain further information (books) relevant to the concepts
outlined in this Module.
Library
Please contact the librarian for information on different resources available using the library link on
the UJ website or library live on your Edulink site.
Additional requirements
Learners are expected to use the knowledge from previous courses: Theory of Structures 1B,
Structural Analysis 2B, Mathematics and Physics).
Learners are expected not to disturb other learners during lectures.
The Lecturer has the right to suspend students from classes in the event of unacceptable conduct.
Announcements are made during the semester on an ongoing basis. This important information will
not be heard by an absent learner.
Learners are required to sign the acknowledgement Slip at the end of the learner guide, thereby
acknowledging that they have read and understood the learner guide for this Module. The slip should
then be neatly cut from the page and returned to the Lecturer.
Assignment marks for students repeating the Module cannot be carried over from previous years.

Study Field Engineering
Subfield Civil Engineering Technology
Duration of Module
The primary purpose of this Module is to introduce the students to relatively advanced methods of
analysis of structural systems, which include main topics (Plastic Theory, Moment Distribution and
Strain Energy).
Learning
Topic Critical Cross-field Outcomes
unit:
11
▪ Calculate plastic modulus and shape
factor of a section of a structural member
▪ Apply the static method to determine the
collapse load or plastic bending moment
of statically determinate and statically
indeterminate beams.
▪ Apply the virtual work method to
determine the collapse load or plastic
bending moment of statically
determinate and statically indeterminate
portal frames and beams.
▪ Determine the collapse mechanism for a
portal frame (beam, sway, or combined
mechanism).
▪ Calculate the support reactions, and the
relevant values of shearing forces,
bending moments, and axial forces on
the verge of collapse of the structure.
▪ Draw/sketch the axial force, shear force
and bending moment diagrams on the
verge of collapse of the structure.
12
▪ Apply Castigliano's theorem I to
determine deflections on statically
determinate truss structures, single-span
beams, and frames.
▪ Apply Castigliano's theorem II to
determine member force/s on a single
redundant truss structure, single span
beams, and frames.
▪ Apply plastic theory to analyse determinate and indeterminate structures (i.e. predict collapse
mechanism, calculate collapse loads and plastic moments, and obtain all measurable
quantities in a structural system when it is on the verge of collapse). (Beams and Portal
Frames)
▪ Apply the Strain Energy method to analyse statically determinate and single redundant
structural systems (Trusses, Beams and Frames).
An integrated teaching and learning approach is followed in this Module. This means that learning is
facilitated by more than one support resource, e.g., face-to-face contact, self-study and group work.
Each is complementary to the other.

Section C: Assessment guidelines
(As per UJ policy and Faculty regulations)
Assessment schedule/opportunities
Test 1 30%
Test 2 30%
Test 3 25%
Practical Lab report 15%
Total 100%
2. The lab report assesses Graduate Attribute 2 (GA2). Based on the marking rubric for
this report, the student must demonstrate reasonable competence in the calculations
and the brief discussions on the results and observations. Failure to demonstrate the
required level of competence the student fails the Module.
Feedback mechanisms
For tests 1 and 2 a memorandum will be discussed and given to the learners after the scripts have
been marked. The marks of test 3 and the lab report will be withheld for the purpose of not
publishing the marks.
14
Section D: Facilitation of learning
Introduction
Learning in this Module takes place on the basis of attending formal lectures and self-study during
the learner's own time. Consultations with the Lecturer are given to assist the learners in better
understanding of the concepts and their application to solving problems.
For consultations, the following may be followed:
a) Students are encouraged to ask questions on any of the contents covered in the previous
lecture sessions before the start of each lecture session. The clarification/explanation will
benefit the entire group.
b) In case of short questions, consult with the Lecturer immediately after the lecture session, or
arrange a suitable time with the Lecturer for questions requiring more extended discussion.
Group discussions are encouraged.
c) Discuss with the Tutor during tutorial sessions or via platforms such as Watsapp.
This practical learning unit assesses Graduate Attribute 2 (GA2). Students must
participate in the truss structure modelling and compile individual reports on the
findings/observations. The details of the practical laboratory work will be given in due
course as an experimental laboratory brief or guide. If a student fails to participate in
this lab work, the submitted lab report will not be considered, which means the
student failed the Module.
15
Section E: ECSA Graduate Attributes (GA)
Introduction
Exit Level Graduate Attributes (GAs), defined in ECSA documents, are a minimum
assessment requirement students must achieve for promotion (pass) for the Module. ECSA
provides a list of GAs that assesses exit-level modules for the different areas or fields of
study.
This Module assesses GA2, the application of scientific and engineering knowledge.
The details are as given in the Table below.
