• Etymologically, term "Humanities" is from the Latin word humanus which means
educated (Sanches, 2011).
• Architecture, dance, literature, music, painting, theatre, and sculpture are the branches of
knowledge that focuses on the human opinions, and relationships (Machlis, 2003).
• As the branch of learning, the artwork is the material objects while its creativity and
appreciation, is the formal object (Menoy, 2009 & Marcos, et al., 2010).
• Humanities is more concerned on how a person expresses his/her feelings. These feelings
can be in facial manifestations or body movements (Menoy, 2009).
• As the branch of knowledge, Humanities explores on human conditions through the use of
analytical, critical, or theoretical methods.
• Humanities can also be the study on how an individual documented and processed his/her
experiences particularly in connecting to other (Stanford University, 2016).
• Imparting Humanities as an academic science is designed to let our learners (particularly
the new generations) become creative and artistic individuals (Marcos, 2010).
• Art can come in the form of many items such as posters, paintings, portraits, covers, and
more.
• People look at art in different ideas that they want to know more about or may be
studying.
• Art can show ideas about the past, what is currently happening and what may happen in
the future. It can also show meaning, love, boredom, and creativity.
• Art appreciation is a way to motivate ideas and allows individuals to illustrate their
feelings when they viewed an artwork.
• Art Appreciation helps develops critical and innovative skills in thinking and teaches
essential qualities in listening, observing, and responding to multiple viewpoints. It also
requires an ability to differentiate what is apparent and what is not (Gargaro & Jilg, 2016
and Sanger, 2012).
• The word art is from a Latin word arti, which means craftsmanship, inventiveness, and
mastery of form, skill. It includes literature, music, painting, photography, sculpture, etc.
• It serves an original record of human needs and achievements. It also refers to the so-
called fine arts (graphics, plastics, buildings) and the so called minor arts (everyday,
useful, applied and decorative arts).
• It is a human capability to make this beautiful though the production of his/her
imagination depending on the preparation, theme, medium, and valued used.
• The word artist comes from the French word artiste and the Spanish artist which means
performer. It is someone who creates art that is merely trades and professions by which
different people make their livings.
• Artist is more often referring to those who create within a context of the fine arts such as
dancing, acting, drawing, filmmaking, painting, sculpture, writing, photography and
music. Creativity is a Characteristic of an artist that progress in the extent of his/her life to
express feeling.
1. Individual Function - The artists perform arts because of the passion of their respective
art forms.
2. Social Function - Man associates with others through his art performance that arouses
social consciousness.
3. Economic Function - Arts are emerging as a potent force in the economic life of people
assumes an essential role as a direct and indirect contributor to state economies.
4. Political Functions - Art provides a forum of ideas that will lead to employment,
prestige, status, and power.
5. Historical Functions - Art is an essential technique for information to be recorded and
preserved.
6. Cultural Functions - Art is an articulation and transmission of new information and
values.
7. Physical Functions - Buildings are artistically designed and constructed to protect their
occupants and make their life inside more meaningful.
8. Aesthetic Functions - Any artwork means beauty. It is visual spice for gracefully adorned
interiors and can bring out the most elegant features of different décor elements.
1. Create Beauty - Art is an expression of our thoughts, emotions, and intuitions. It is the
communication of concepts that cannot be faithfully portrayed by word. Alone.
2. Provide Decoration - Artworks are used to create a pleasing environment. It is intended
to beautify things to please and amuse the viewers through its colors and patterns.
3. Reveals Truth - Artwork helped to pursue truth and attempted to reveal about how the
world works.
4. Express Values - Arts can illuminate our inner lives and enrich our emotional world.
Through arts, the artist will be encouraged to develop their creativity, challenge, and
communication skills. It also promotes self-esteem and wellness.
5. Commemorate Experience - Art serves to convey the personal experiences of an artist
and records his impression in his work.
6. Create Harmony - An artist makes use of the composition to put an order in the diverse
content of his work.
1. Visual arts: These are the kinds of art that produce works that are largely visual or
include the sense of sight. These categories encompass various forms, including: painting,
sculpture, architecture, drawing and photography.
2. PERFORMING ARTS: These arts are characterized by live, dynamic presentations that
engage audiences through movement, sound, and storytelling. Key forms include: theater,
dance, music, and opera. This type of art is primarily created for the purpose of
beautifying or enhancing the visual appeal of functional items and spaces. This category
includes: ceramics, textiles, and interior design.
3. LITERARY ARTS: These arts centered on creative writing and other composition
processes which intended to read. These include prose and poetry (e.g., novels, short
stories, sonnet, ballad, epic, and essay).
4. DECORATIVE ARTS: This type of art is primarily created for the purpose of
beautifying or enhancing the visual appeal of functional items and spaces. This category
includes: ceramics, textiles, and interior design.
5. MEDIA ARTS: Media arts involve technology and digital media to create artistic works.
This category includes: film, animation, and digital art.
Knowing and practicing the arts discipline are fundamental to the development of the minds and
spirits of the students (National Art Education Association, 1994).
There are several reasons for the art to be included in an educational systems, it evidence that
involvement in the arts has been shown to help student in their academic, person and social
development.
1. ART ARE WORTH STUDENT: It served to connect our imagination with the most
profound question of human experience.
2. ARTS ARE ALWAYS USED: It helps to present issues and ideas to teach persuade and
entertain people.
3. ART ARE INTEGRAL TO EVERY PERSON'S DAILY LIFE: It helps shape our
spiritual political economic cultural and social environment.
4. ART ARE REFRESHING: It offer unique sources of enjoyment and it investigate
relationships between thoughts and actions.
5. ART DEVELOP STUDENT ATTITUDES: It teaches self-discipline, reinforce
selfesteem, foster the thinking skills and creativity and values the importance of team
work and cooperation.

• Aesthetics - from the Greek word aisthetikos means “perception”. A Branch of philosophy
that deals with the study of arts and beauty.
• Crafts - from the German word Kraft means “power” or “ability”. It also an application of
individuals skills through the use of hand.
• Arts and Crafts - started during 19th century in Europe as design reform and as a social
movement motivated by William Morris.
• William Morris (March 24, 1834- Oct 3, 1896) – Is known for his pattern designs,
particularly on fabrics, and wallpapers.
1. Textile Crafts - textile comes from a Latin phrase texere means “to brand” or “to
construct”. This also refers to any craft that works with fabric, yarn, or surface design. It
uses synthetic fibers in creating functional or decorative objects.
a) Cross-stitch – a popular form of counted thread embroidery in which an X-
shaped stiches pattern is used to form a picture.
b) Crocket – a process of creating fabric from yarn, thread or other material strands
using a crocket hook.
c) Sewing – crafts of fastening or attaching objects using stiches made with needle
and thread.
d) Weaving – a fabric production method in which yarns are interlaced at right
angles to from a fabric or cloth.
e) Tatting – it is constructed by a series of knots and loops to make durable lace.
f) Shoemaking – the skills of manufacturing footwear.
g) Lace – a fabric patterned with open holes in the work, made by hand or machines.
h) Macrame – a form of making textile which needs few tools and just some pure
knowledge of basic knotting.
i) Millinery – it is the designing and manufacturing of hats.
j) String Art – an arrangement of colored thread strung between points to form an
abstract geometric design.
2. Wood Crafts – it refers to skills that pertain to the wood. Paete’s woodcrafts in Laguna is
an example where generations of artisans have made a living out of chisel in this town
that carries the tool in its name.
a) Carpentry – a skilled trade in cutting, shaping, and installation of building
materials during the construction of buildings.
b) Marquetry – the art and craft of applying pieces of veneer to a structure to form
decorative designs.
c) Woodturning – a type of woodworking that is used to create wooden objects.
d) Wood Carving – a type of woodworking that creates a wooden figure or objects
by using knife or chisel.
e) Cabinetry – a skill in making a box shaped piece of furniture with doors and
drawers.
f) Upholstery – the art of creating a cushion and furniture.
3. Metal Crafts – Refers to the art of making artistic designs in metal, both practical and
aesthetic purposes. Metal works also include jewelry like anklets, bracelets, and
neckpieces. Metal pieces are engraved with geometric motifs or designed for decorative
or functional purposes.
a) Jewelry – a form of personal decorations, such as brooches, rings, necklaces,
earrings and bracelets.
b) Metal Casting – a process where materials like bronze, copper, glass, aluminum,
and iron is poured into a mold and then allowed to solidify.
c) Welded Sculpture – an art form in which the statue is made using welding
techniques.
4. Paper or Canvas Crafts – Refers to an incredibly durable plain-woven fabric used for
making backpacks, tents, marquees, and other sustainable items.
a) Bookbinding – the process of assembling a book from some folded or unfolded
paper or other materials.
b) Card Making – a hand-made methods for producing greeting cards.
c) Collage – a technique in assembling different forms from materials to create
artwork.
d) Origami – an art of papers folding practiced by Japanese as a culture.
e) Paper Mache – a composite material consisting of paper pieces or pulp,
sometimes reinforced with textiles, bound with adhesive.
f) Scrapbooking – refers to a method of arranging, preserving, and presenting
personal and family history in a book form.
g) Rubber Stamping – a craft wherein the ink is applied to the pattern that carved or
molded into a rubber sheet.
5. Plants Crafts – These refer to a skill using plant parts as the medium.
a) Corn dolly making – relates to the making shapes and figures (“dollies”) from
straw such as barley, oats and wheat.
b) Floral Design – the art of using plant materials and flowers to create a pleasing
and balanced composition.
c) Pressed flower craft – consist of drying flower petals of leaves in a flower press
to flatten.

PURPOSE OF ARTS
The purposes of art are the premeditated actions of the artist. Art may bring political change to
the life of a society or covey a specific propaganda (Holly, 2002)
1. Art of Acting – Art may pursue to bring about a specific emotion, to relax, or to
entertain the viewer.
2. Art for Healing – Art is also performed by clinical psychologists and art
therapists.
3. Art for Political Change – One of the essential functions of the art of early 20th
century has been to use visual images to bring about legislative modification.
4. Art for Propaganda – Art is used to influence popular ideas or moods delicately.
5. Art for Communication – Art has a goal, directed toward another individual.
