Introduction
Reading is a learning activity dominated by the eyes and brain, where eyes receive the
message, and then the brain processes to obtain the meaning of the message received. In this
job we focused on reading intensive and reading extensive.
Intensive reading is one of the most critical skills you can develop to get a better
understanding of information. When you have to read a report for work, for instance, you
can’t just skim it and call it a day. You have to get a deeper understanding of what’s written,
assess the purpose and evaluate the results to make sense of it. Reading intensively will help
you tackle complex texts and extensive reading is a type of reading where you engage with
different types of reading material. It can be fiction, non-fiction, work-related documents,
newspaper articles.
Intensive reading
Intensive reading is one of the most critical skills you can develop to get a better
understanding of information. When you have to read a report for work, for instance, you
can’t just skim it and call it a day. You have to get a deeper understanding of what’s written,
assess the purpose and evaluate the results to make sense of it. Reading intensively will help
you tackle complex texts.
It’s not about reading book after book or 10 articles a day. Even if you’re reading a single-
line quote, you should try to understand what the words are trying to convey.
Students focus on surface structure details such as grammar and discourse markers;
Aim is to build more language knowledge rather than simply practice the skill of reading.
Materials
Usually very short texts - not more than 500 words in length;

In school, it was easier to read in bulk and still understand everything. This is primarily
because we had more time and fewer worries related to our future. Today, we get distracted
for a good hour if someone so much as rings the doorbell.
Here are some main ways to develop the habit of Intensive Reading:
Taking notes
Taking notes is convenient when you reread the text and can be particularly helpful when
you’re reading a long report. Add sticky notes with questions, ideas and opinions so you can
share them with the author.
It’s not enough to simply keep the information to yourself and forget about it the next
day. If you can find ways to use that information, you’ll be able to retain it for much
longer.
Extensive Reading
Extensive reading is a type of reading where you engage with different types of reading
material. One of purpose of this kind of reading it is because here read for a enjoyment or we
do this kind of reading just to relax or to get some information.
It is widely accepted that people become good readers through reading, and that learning how
to read should mean a primary focus of attention on the meaning rather than the language of
the text. It is pretty obvious that extensive reading helps students become better readers.
Richard Day amongst many others shows that we learn to read by reading.
Probably the most cited benefit of Extensive Reading is that it can extend and sustain
students’ vocabulary growth. We know that vocabulary is not learned by a single exposure.
Students who read extensively also make gains in writing proficiency (Elley and

It is highly motivating for students to discover that they can read in English and that they
enjoy it. For this reason it is essential that the books are interesting to students and at a level
appropriate to their reading ability.

Students can read anywhere, at any time, and reading extensively helps them become

Extensive Reading builds vocabulary. When learners read a lot, they meet thousands of
words and lexical (word) patterns that are not taught in textbooks.
Extensive Reading helps learners understand grammar. In textbooks learners meet hundreds
of grammar patterns. However, textbooks do not provide enough meetings with grammar for
real acquisition to occur.
Extensive Reading provides opportunities to see grammar in context so learners can deepen
their understanding of how grammar is really used.
Extensive Reading helps learners to build reading speed and reading fluency. In particular,
developing reading speed is important because it helps learners to understand language faster
and better. One objective of Extensive Reading is reading for pleasure. This builds
confidence and motivation which makes the learner a more effective use of language.
Conclusion
In other to conclude our job the reading intensive is one of the most critical skills you can
develop to get a better understanding of information and the extensively reading is a type of
reading where you engage with different types of reading material, we also found that
intensive and extensive reading both has set characteristics, vantages and advantages in
which all of those approaches are important in the process of reading and help the reader
improving its skills in reading techniques.
