REED 3 MODULE 2
Lesson 6

ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES
Identify the part of your life that needs healing, compassion and mercy. Share an
insight you have gained so far into the spiritual meaning of human suffering. Extensively
discuss your answer.

I am a sinful person. I am not perfect. I hurt others but I did not intend to. I am
also selfish sometimes. But I also experience sufferings. That is the reason why I still
need healing, compassion and mercy especially in my actions, in my mind, body, and
soul. It teaches me to become a better person. For example, whenever I face challenges or
when I suffered because of others, that is the time when I need healing, compassion and
mercy the most. It is because I need to forgive them and in order to forgive them, I need
to be compassionate and merciful enough so that I can get the healing and peace that I
want for myself. I need healing, compassion and mercy in order to unite with others and
with God and feel His unending love, support and strength again.

Suffering is a product of the fall, a consequence of human sin against God

(Romans 5:12; 1 Corinthians 15:21). Suffering is in our lives because we are living in a
broken world. We become more reflective and confront the parts of ourselves that we
might otherwise avoid because of human suffering. Then, through suffering, God can
transform us into better individuals, those who will always love and appreciate Him. For
me, experiencing suffering in union with Christ may be a source of countless graces and
blessings, a powerful tool for transforming and sanctifying our lives. Some of our sins
and poor decisions are to blame for our suffering, but some of it is just the result of the
world being fallen. This feature of suffering ought to make us wish for a better world, one
that has been atoned for and is free of sin and for the day when God will return to
establish it. Human suffering is really a tool of sanctification and a test of faith.
Therefore, as we develop an understanding of how to approach suffering, we must be
clear that suffering never becomes good. Suffering remains evil. What must be
understood though is that suffering can be redeemed; it can be made purposeful. When
we are burdened beyond our strength, we must not become bitter but instead allow our
faith to make us better. For the Christian, we must see suffering as a trifold call to long
for a better world, to seek to become a better person and to live out a better witness.
