This is meant to be an aid, but not a comprehensive guide.
1. Go to tax school
Apply to the Tax Practitioner Board for approval to take the exam (submit the
course completion certificate referenced above).
Apply and pay for a license (you can skip this step if you are not in one of these
seven states: California, Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, Nevada, New York, Oregon).
Every year take 30 hours of continuing education & reapply (and pay) for license

What Does a Tax
Preparer Do?
Serve client: comply with state and federal tax codes and minimize tax burden as much
as possible for business owner
Serve IRS: comply with laws and file accurate return
Prepare, file, assist with general tax forms
What you can do depends on your level of certification
Tasks performed:
Meet with clients to gather information regarding income, expenses, and allowances
Fill out and file forms based on federal and state tax codes
Organize confidential paperwork
Use financial software to ensure accuracy
Provide financial guidance and recommendations
Stay informed about federal and state tax laws, adjustments, credits, and deductions
