(c) The reaction of sodium metal is found to be highly explosive..
Explain these observations giving suitable reasons.
5. A silver article generally turns black when kept in the open for a few days. The article when
rubbed with toothpaste again starts shining.

a. Identify the white and grey powders.
b. What type of reaction is this?
c. Write the balanced chemical equation for the above reaction.
12. A reddish-brown metal X when heated in presence of oxygen forms a black compound Y,
which is basic in nature and when heated with hydrogen gas gives back X. Identify X and Y.
Write the chemical equation(s) involved.
13. Assertion and Reason Questions Directions: In the following questions, a statement of
assertion (A) is followed by a statement of reason (R). Mark the correct choice as:
(a) Both assertion (A) and reason (R) are true and reason (R) is the correct explanation of
assertion (A).
(b) Both assertion (A) and reason (R) are true but reason (R) is not the correct explanation of
assertion (A).

14. CASE STUDY
When fats and oils are oxidized, they become rancid and their smell and taste change. Usually
substances which prevent oxidation (antioxidants) are added to foods containing fats and oil. Keeping
food in air tight containers helps to slow down oxidation. Use this information to answer the following
questions:
14a.) What do you mean by the word RANCIDITY?
14b.) Write any three methods to prevent rancidity.
14c.) What is the meaning of antioxidants. Give an example.
14d.) Which gas is filled in the chips packets to keep them crunchy?
14e.) Write any traditional method used by our ancestors to prevent rancidity.
