4 Work out the area of the shapes in question 3.
TASK 2 Solve these
1 A circle has a circumference of 12.56 m. What is the radius of the circle? Give your answer to one
decimal place.
2 Suki has a flowerbed in the shape of a circle with diameter 2.8 m. She is going to plant it with
bedding plants. She can put 12 plants in each square metre of flowerbed. The plants are sold in trays of
six plants and cost $8.50 a tray. How many trays of plants will Suki need to buy and how much will it

TASK 2 Problem solving
1 Mr J has a rectangular swimming pool in his garden that measures 10 m by 6 m. He is going to
put a path around the pool. The path will be 1 m wide.
Mr J is going to use concrete to make the path. Concrete costs $55 per square metre. How
much will it cost Mr J to make the path?
2 Faisal and Samira have been asked to find the total area of this compound shape as homework.
2.4 m 0.6 m 0.8 m
0.9 m
0.9 m 1.0 m 1.2 m
Here is Faisal’s working
Length of whole rectangle = 0.9 + 0.6 + 1.0 + 0.8 + 1.2 = 4.5 m
Area of whole rectangle = 2.4 × 4.5 = 10.8 m2
0.8 × 0.9 = 0.72 m2 and 0.6 × 0.9 = 0.54 m2
Area cut out of large rectangle = 0.72 + 0.54 = 1.26 m2
Total area = area of large rectangle – area cut out = 10.8 – 1.26 = 9.56 m2
Here is Samira’s working
Length of top rectangle = 0.9 + 0.6 + 1.0 + 0.8 + 1.2 = 4.5 m
Width of top rectangle = 2.4 – 0.9 = 1.5 m
Area of top rectangle = 4.5 × 1.5 = 6.75 m2
0.9 × 0.9 = 0.81 m2, 0.9 × 1.0 = 0.09 m2 and 0.9 × 1.2 = 1.08 m2
Total area = 6.57 + 0.81 + 0.9 + 1.08 = 8.55 m2
