Light propagation through fibers
The basic principle behind the transmission of light
through the optical fiber is ‘Total Internal Reflection’
which is described below:
Signal attenuation (also know as fiber loss or signal loss) is one of the
most important properties of fiber for determining repeater less
separation between a transmitter and a receiver.

Signal attenuation is usually expressed in terms decibel. The decibel


may be defined for a particular optical wavelength as the logarithmic
ratio of the input (transmitted) optical power Pi into a fiber to the
output (receiver) optical power Po from the fiber which is given by
following relation,
In silica glass,absorption is caused by the vibration of silicon-
oxygen (Si-O) bonds. The interaction between the vibrating bond
and the electromagnetic field of the optical signal causes intrinsic
absorption.
This is known as material dispersion.

The amount of material dispersion (Dm) can be calculated by following


relation
