VI. Concept Notes

The Role of Biotechnology and How it Change our Lives

Biotechnology is nothing but the technology that uses biology to improve the
quality of lives of people. It has wide applications and essential part of modern
technology. However, biotechnology is not just a single technology. It is, in fact, a
group of technologies that work with living cells and molecules and help find new
solutions to improve the quality of our lives. Though biotechnology has been used
since ages, the recent developments in molecular biology, genetic engineering has
immensely increased its potential.
Modern biotechnology has two streams, namely: genetic biotechnology and
non-genetic biotechnology. Genetic biotechnology uses genetic engineering to
modify and improve the DNA processes that have a lot of benefits for humans. The
Non-genetic biotechnology seeks to improve and modify the strains of the crop,
microbial fermentation, tissue culture etc. without making changes to the DNA or
genes. Biotechnology applications are used in different fields like food, medicine,
environment etc.
Biotechnology in Agriculture

The world population is expected to be about 8.7 billion by 2050. Though

population growth is immense, the land surface of our world remains same. The
ideal farming land has been extensively used and lost its prime utility. This, in turn,
has the potential to create food shortage in coming years. Biotechnology helps not
only to improve the yield of crops but also produce superior crops with nutritional
value required to meet the demand. It helps eradicate malnutrition in developing
countries. Biotechnology works to improve make growing environments flexible,
reduce dependency on chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and irrigation and build
resistance in crops.

Biotechnology in Medicine

Biotechnology is widely used in the development of several innovative

techniques for diagnosing, treating, and preventing diseases. It helps in providing
effective treatments and prevention measures for different disease by its inventions
of novel drugs and recombinant vaccines. Biotechnology has been playing a
dynamic role in improving the challenges regarding human health and their welfare.
There are many more research and investigation processes carried out for improving
the future technologies. Biotechnology has played a significant role in improving
human health by producing enriched nutrients food products such as Golden Rice,
potato, maize, groundnuts, and soybean etc.

Figure 2: Biotechnology in Health Promotion

Biotechnology is a broad range of technologies that employ living organisms

or parts of them to make diverse products. For example, drugs and therapeutics,
nutritional compounds, environmentally friendly chemicals and materials, biofuels,
and novel functional materials can be produced through biotechnology. More
broadly, medical biotechnology, agricultural biotechnology and industrial
biotechnology will all play increasingly important roles in our everyday life.
Biotechnology in Environment

Biotechnology can also be employed to degrade toxic or harmful chemicals

and agents to solve environmental problems. The potential benefits include solving
world food shortages, and improvements in medicine, agriculture, and veterinary
sciences. We can confidently expect biotechnological solutions to many essential
industrial processes that currently produce toxic effluents. An increasing role for
biotechnology in environmental management will undoubtedly follow. Because the
prospect of serious biohazards appears to be receding, it does not mean that strict
regulation of the new technology should be relaxed. Provided such vigilance is
maintained, mankind can look forward to a wide range of exciting prospects that
stem from biotechnology.

3
The application biotechnology is quite vast, and the advantages are immense
and virtually every industry uses biotechnology directly or indirectly. The growth of
biotechnology has been happening at a scorching pace in recent times and a lot
more is expected in near future. It finds application in diagnostics, textiles,
pharmaceuticals, aquaculture, household products, forestry, forensics,
environmental clean-up, food processing and chemicals enabling them to make new
and better products. It helps them improve the speed and efficiency of production. It
also helps in reducing pollution and waste generation.
