pUCATIONAL RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT
overview
educational Research & development is one research design aimed
ot developing and validating educational products. The process
avolves identifying problems that need to be solved by educational
products, like textbooks, syllabus, assessment instruments, etc.,
studying the principles of writing instructional media, developing
the media based on the principles, field testing it in the setting
where it will be used eventually, and revising it to correct the
deficiencies found in the filed-testing stage. In more rigorous
programs of R&D, this cycle is repeated until the field-test data
indicate that the product meets its behaviorally defined objectives
(Borg and Gall 1989:772).

Educational Research &Development vs. Classroom Action
Research
Research & Development and Classroom Action Research have
both similarities and differences. Both research designs aim at solving
classroom problems and, therefore, contribute to the improvement of
the quality of classroom practices. The research in Gath hn h de-
signs is usually conducted by classroom teachers, as the : cr

jesearch Objectives in Research & Development
Usually only research objectives are stated in Research & Devel-
pment, which contain two pieces of information, (1) the classroom
groblems to be solved and (2) the specification of the educational prod-
is to be developed. For example, “This study wants to produce in-
suctional materials based on Contextual Teaching and Learning to
develop students’ skills in writing narrative paragraphs in English for
gde VII students in SMPN 1 Malang”. This research objective indi- ,
cates that grade VII students of SMPN 1 Malang are having problems if
inwriting narrative paragraphs in English because the learning mate-| “e~
tial is not appropriate (the problems) and instructional imatsnceiaes zo i
be developed based on Contextual Teaching and Learning (product).
