Microelectronics Circuits (ECE/EEE/INSTR F244) Tutorial on Feedback in Amplifiers

Question 1 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Figure (a) below shows a feedback transconductance amplifier using an op amp together with an NMOS transistor.

The feedback network consists of a resistor R𝐹 that senses the output current I𝑜 (recall that the drain and source

currents of a MOSFET are equal) and provides a feedback voltage that is subtracted from V𝑠 by means of the

differencing action of the op-amp input.

(a) Setting A=∞, find the ideal closed-loop gain I𝑜 /V𝑠 .

(b) Find the value of R𝐹 that results in an ideal closed-loop gain of 10 mA/V.

(c) Find an expression for the loop gain 𝐴𝛽 by setting V𝑠 =0, breaking the loop, and applying an input test

voltage V𝑡 , as shown in figure (b). Assume the input resistance of the op amp to be very high.

(d) For 𝜇=1000, and assuming the MOSFET has g𝑚 =2mA/V and r𝑜 =20 kΩ, find the values of 𝐴𝛽, A, and A 𝑓 .

For the feedback transconductance amplifier of figure below, derive expressions for A, 𝛽, 𝐴𝛽, A 𝑓 , R𝑜 , and R𝑜 𝑓 .

Evaluate A 𝑓 and R𝑜 𝑓 for the case of g𝑚1 =g𝑚2 =4 mA/V, R𝐷 =25 kΩ, r𝑜2 =20 kΩ, R𝐹 =100 Ω, and R 𝐿 =1 kΩ. For

simplicity, neglect r𝑜1 and take r𝑜2 into account only when calculating output resistances. Also, evaluate the

output resistance R𝑜𝑢𝑡 seen between the two terminals of R 𝐿 .

Analyze the circuit of figures below, assuming R𝐹 is not large, R 𝑀 is not small, and the laser diode is modeled

by a resistance R 𝐿 . Also, assume r𝑂2 < ∞.
