Welcome to the Library
We have librarians on all campuses to assist you in:

• Accessing a wide range of books, journals, videos and online


resources

• Finding the resources required to support your study

• Researching information on your chosen subjects

• Referencing your work using the APA referencing format.


Physical Library
• Borrowing physical items:
• 20 items at any one time
• Most books can be issued for 3 weeks
• Some books can be issued for 7 days
• Computers :
• Log in using your institutional email and password
• Meeting Rooms
• Book a meeting room for you or a group

• Always bring your Student ID with you for:


• Issuing books and journals
• Printing/photocopying
Library Resources
What makes a good source?
• Currency – Timeliness. When was it published?
• Relevancy – Usefulness. Does it relate to your topic?
• Authority – Source. Who wrote it? What are their qualifications?
• Accuracy – Truthfulness. Where does the information come from? Peer-
reviewed? Supported by evidence? Reliability of the website - look at the
domain name (URL).
➢Government .govt, .gov, .mil
➢Non-commercial .org
• Purpose - Why does the information exist? Is it trying to inform,
sell, teach, entertain, persuade? Objective or biased? Who is the intended
audience?
What is Referencing?

• Referencing is a standardised way of acknowledging the sources you have


used in your assignment.

• APA referencing (7th edition) is used at WelTec, Whitireia and Te Auaha.


Why Reference?
• Acknowledge the source.

• Give the author(s) credit - show you are not plagiarising.

• Show you have consulted relevant sources.

• Enable your reader to trace the original source.

• Provide evidence for an argument.

What Needs to be Referenced?
All material you use in your work that comes from someone else,
including:

• Direct quotes • Images


• Indirect quotes / paraphrasing • Tables/charts/figures
• Theories • Statistics
• Ideas • Anything that involves
• Research findings interpretation of facts and
• Case studies concepts
Common Knowledge
This is general knowledge – reliable information that is widely
known, that doesn’t need to be looked up. For example:

APA Referencing
There are two parts to APA referencing:

In text citation
• Citation within the text of your assignment
• Used for quotes and paraphrases

Reference list
• Specially formatted list at the end of your assignment of all the sources
that were cited
What is a Citation?
• Brief information about a source.

• Found next to a quote or paraphrase which directs the reader to the full
details in the reference list.

• Directs your reader to the full details of the source in your reference list.
In-Text Citations
Direct quote
•An author’s ideas and words​.
•Use less of – only if you require an exact definition or if an author has said
something memorable or succinct​.
•Use quotation marks “ ” to indicate what part is someone else’s words.

Indirect quote or paraphrase or summary


•An author’s ideas but your words​.
•Use more of – puts information into context for your assignment. Shows
you have understood and thought about what you are reading and using.
Styles of in text citations

Direct quote - requires page number and “ ”
Egan (2012) states “children’s fantasy has usually been neglected as having
no educational value or interest” (p. 11).

Indirect quote or paraphrase or summary - page number optional


Egan (2012) argues that fantasy has often been overlooked as an
educational resource.

End of the sentence

Direct quote - requires page number and “ ”

Indirect quote or paraphrase or summary - page number optional

Citations with Multiple Authors

One Author - (Smith, 2022)

Two Authors – (Smith & Jones, 2022)

Three or more authors – (Smith et. al., 2022)


What is a Reference List?
An alphabetical list providing full details for each source cited in your work.
References
Formatting a reference list
• At the end of your assignment on a separate page

• Use References as the title – Bold, centred, not in italics

• Entries are arranged alphabetically with the first line hard against the margin

• Double spaced

• Uses hanging indentation

• Only include sources you have cited in your assignment

• Author(s) - Family name first, initial for first name


• Date - Year of publication in parentheses ( )
• Title - In italics. Capitals – first word of title, subtitle and proper nouns
• Source – Publisher.

• Add edition information for 2nd or subsequent editions after title


• Full stop after each element – punctuation is important
• Publishers - Do not include Co., Ltd. etc.

Author. (Specific date). Title. Source

• Author: Can be an individual or corporate author


• Date: When the page was created/ last modified
➢the most specific date possible
➢If no date visible, use (n.d.)
• Title: in italics. Capital letter for 1st word of title, subtitle and proper nouns
• Source: Name of the website followed by hyperlinked URL. If the author &
website name are the same, omit the site name

Journal Article

• Author(s): Family name first, initial for first name


• Date: Year of publication in parentheses ( )
• Title: Article title (no italics). Capitals – first word of title, subtitle and proper
nouns.
• Source: Include journal title (in italics). Main words have capitals, minor
words (3 letters or smaller) do not e.g. of, and. Volume in italics, issue
number and page numbers are not in italics.
Journal Article
Generating a Citation
• Most databases have a citation generator.

• The icon will usually have set of quotation marks like this:

• When you use a citation generator, always double check that it’s correct
(Remember we use APA 7th edition).

• They will generate a reference list but not in-text citation.
