What is System Administration?


• - refers to the management, maintenance,
configuration, and operation of computer
systems and networks within an organization.
• - According to Burgess (2004), network &
system administration is “a branch of
engineering that concerns the operational
management of human-computer systems”.

Part 2: System Vs Network Administrator


A person who practices system administration is called a “System Administrator”
(informally: “Sysad” or “Sysadmin”). When administering a computer network is involved,
the term “Network Administrator” (“Netadmin” or “Netad”) is also used.

A “Network Administrator” duties may depend on the size and scope of a company or organization.

A “System Administrator” may handle all IT duties (such as maintain and update all computers within the network
and as well as ensure the data security and backup).

According to Wells (2000), this means that the job of a system administrator in general:
• Makes technology work and continue to work.
• Ties together programs, devices and networks into complete, operational systems that can increase
productivity, reduce costs, and benefit those who use the technology.
• Keeps the systems running efficiently as new components are added, removed or changed; system
reconfigured as a consequence of alteration or even failure.

Task of a System Administrator:

• User Management
- Creating / editing user accounts, granting account permissions

• Hardware Maintenance
- Installing, upgrading, repairing or replacing hardware

• Training End Users


- Train users how to use new or existing system, or execute procedure

• Performing occasional, recurring and routine tasks


- Performance monitoring, backup, troubleshooting, etc.

Part 3: Working as a System Administrator


Task of a System Administrator:

• Documentation
- Putting your work in writing for future reference.

• Crafting policies and procedures


- Define backup procedures, security procedures, user guidelines, disaster plan, etc.

• Recovering from emergencies


- Restoring functionality after power outage, shutdown, disaster, etc.

• System Planning
- Decide on new hardware and software procurement, plan future system upgrades and
designs to meet the organization’s future needs.

Organization
• A System Administrator typically works as part of the
Information Technology (IT), Information and
Communications Technology (ICT) or Information
Systems (IS) unit of an organization.

• For example:
• The role like this position is assigned to a technical
staff member within the Information Technology Center
of MMSU.
