Questions
Provide answers to all of the questions below:

1. Describe communication processes and the importance of such when conducting applied
research.

Communication processes are a very important area of study that determines our
capabilities to interpret the world. While conducting an applied research, conversation
between staff and scholar, writing journal papers and proposals are important modes of
communication. Applied research includes real life situations such as developing
technology, education and scientific problems. Effective communication helps in
transmitting messages and information clearly. Research is an interdisciplinary sector in
which communication methods increase the ability to communicate more effectively in
order to foster innovation and collaboration. While conducting an applied research the
whole process of development and implementation of the whole research work is very
important. A proper communication process requires few meetings for initial discussion
of the research followed by weekly staff meetings. The process of research involves
long term communication also to discuss its implementation. When the researchers are
able to communicate effectively a systemic and rigorous platform is created to design,
conduct, analyse and implement in order to give a progressive and developed research
work.

2. Describe four communication methods that you may consider using in relation to applied
research.

When conducting a research work, communication ensures that the information is

correctly collected, understood and interpreted. The communication process begins with
the sender and ends after getting received by the receiver. For communication method
may include1) Verbal communication- Verbal communication involves use of sound and
word to communicate

2) Written - Written communication involves sending of research work via journal or

research paper

3) Oral Communication- Presentation of research work through mouth by direct or

indirect medium is oral communication

4) Face to Face Communication- This involves assessment of work by discussion in a

group with help of face to face communication.

3. Explain three data collection methods. Include at least one manual method, as well as one
method that uses technology and one method that uses technology services.

[Type here]
Applied research involves many kinds of data collection methods. Proper data
collection These methods are important as the collected information provides the
knowledge of the previous works and research ( Ostrow, Penney, Stuart & Leaf,
2017). The process of data can be manual and technologically driven. Manual data
collection involves collecting data in paper by conducting interviews, surveys,
observation and by questioning. Data’s are also gathered in technology like in online
data collection, tablets and smart phones. This type of data collection which involves
electronic tools is a technologically driven way of collecting data. Some data are also
collected with help of technology services like social media analysis and organization
records of different bureau and agencies. Few of the most common data collection
process are1) Interview- Interviews are a form of manual data collection process. It
involves discussion of various ideas with people having pre-knowledge of the work.
Conducting interviews help in understanding the rich and deep insight of the information.
2) Online data collection- The data can also be collected online. Technology is one of
the most powerful tools that can collect data from anywhere. The information that is
collected directly by volunteering own source is known as crowdsourcing when the
data’s are collected from other trained informants are known as crowd seeding. 3) Social
media analytics- Information’s that are collected using social media is a form of
technology service data collection. This data collection gathers information by
monitoring social media networks.

4. Explain three data analysis methods. Include at least one manual method, as well as one
method that uses technology and one method that uses technology services.

Data analysis is a process to evaluate data collected to understand the changes and
most effectively use the relevance of the research and keep its integrity. The analysis
tool helps in updating the collected database with proper analysis of it. The data can
be analysed manually by conducting surveys, feedback, focus groups and case study.
Further technology can also be used to analyse data that includes CAPI, IVR, GPS
tracking and catboats services. Some of the most popular data analysis methods are
listed below 1) Focus group- Focus group analysis is a manual method which involves
interactive sessions in groups. The researchers discuss the collected data with a group
of people for understanding the relevance of data. This method helps give broader
perspective to the collected data which helps in maintaining integrity of it. 2) CAPI - CAPI
stands for Computer Aided Personal Interviewing. This process generates a higher
response rate and is able to connect to a vast population. The process of data
analysis is fast and maintaining its integrity is much easier. It is even easy to modify
the data with proper feedback. 3) Chabot’s- Chabot’s are technological services that help
in data analysis. They properly analyse data and give data driven decisions. Bots
generally store a high amount of data and analyse the whole data before generating
response.

5. Explain legal requirements that apply to the handling and storing of data when conducting
research.

Handling and storing of data involves adhering to legal requirements. In relation to

collect data the privacy principle requires the entity to not collect personal information

[Type here]
except in case of sensitive information. The privacy principle ensures data is 1) Used
properly and legally 2) Gathered, held and processed for specified purpose 3) Sufficient and
relevant

4) Accurate and up to date 5) Securely stored and processed 6) Not accessible without
consent 7) Cannot be transferred without legal procedure

6. Explain legal requirements that apply to privacy of data when conducting research.

Privacy is a legal requirement that needs to be considered while conducting a

research work. The Privacy Act 1988 states the law for privacy which advises on the
accessibility of private information ( Witzleb, 2018). The privacy act intended to provide
a basis for national consistency to privacy regulation, facilitating free flow of information
ensuring individual privacy. The act consists of open and transparent management
of personal information, anonymity and pseudonymity if any individual wants to hide
its own identity. The Act has solicited personal information which is used and
disclosed only under the consent of the people involved maintaining a complete
security of the information. Input devices or other external memory devices are used
from trustworthy sources in order to maintain privacy. All levels of suspicious activity
are assessed to protect the individual's privacy.

7. Explain legal requirements that apply to freedom of information in government-held

documentation when conducting research.

Every research work involves a new innovation. Information is the most valuable
resource. Freedom of information when conducting research involves few policies and
laws that give permission to the people about information that can be or cannot be
assessed. This right is promoted and enforced in the Freedom of Information Act 1982
(FOI Act). According to the act documents that contain personal information, policy
making documents, and administrative decision making documents can be accessed.
While the documents exempted under FOI Act cannot be accessed. The FOI Act
ensures protection of information that prevent misuse, interference, loss or unauthorized
accessing of documents. The FOI act detects privacy breaches promptly in order to
protect the right of people by ensuring privacy to their creative work.

8. Explain the key steps in the applied research process that may be referred to in policies,
procedures and guidelines relating to applied research.

Key steps involved in applied research process that can be referred to in policies,
procedure and guidelines are as follows1) Collection of information The personal data’s
can be collected from different individual creators, publishers, licenses and IT
professionals. Even the data can be directly collected from the individual themselves. A
huge amount of data is available online. Different websites and online services can be
used to gather wide information. Email and electronic forms also help in collecting
information and feedback. Different google analytics collect data about users usage and
behaviour on websites. 2) Anonymity Options are given to the individual to not identify

[Type here]
them self or of using pseudonyms so that information can be secured. 3) Use and
disclosure of personal information The use and disclosure of the personal information
for primary business purposes for which it collected. The information is disclosed only
when consent is given otherwise without consent not information is passed until
authorized by law 4) Marketing material The personal information collected can be used
in marketing from time to time considering the usefulness of the information. 5) Digital
and Internet Security Input devices or other external memory devices are used from
trustworthy sources in order to maintain privacy. All levels of suspicious activity are
assessed to protect the individual's privacy.

9. Describe three presentation techniques that could be used for applied research.

Different types of presentation techniques are involved in applied research. An

effective presentation technique must consider effective use of visualization to present
the data; the structure must be clean and simple without overload of information. The
presentation needs to consider the audience expectation by using effective
communication process and presentation techniques. Presentation Technique can include
using relevant technology for the purpose and having a deep knowledge about the
topic to be presented. Three presentation technique involved in applied research are as
follows1) Using technology relevant to presentation Digital interactive is one of the
presentation techniques which make the presentation visually appealing and attractive.
Technology makes the presentation more enticing as it involves versatility and
scalability of the information provided ( Barker & Sparrow, 2016). The technology
conveys the correct information and engages people's involvement in the presentation.
2) Speaking clearly with simple slides. The presentation must contain simple slides
with information that are of utmost importance. The slides must not contain overload
information with typical jargons of words which are not understood by the people. The
slides must have relevant pictures which can be explained by the representative by
communicating with the audience clearly and concisely. 3) Responding to the question
The representative of the presentation must have a clear idea about the presentation.
The audience may ask questions related to it, so the presenter must be well informed
to identify the question and answer it with proper explanation.

10. Describe two ways of reporting on research.

Reporting on the research involves categorization of the data and collating of

documents along with the final report to be presented. Reporting on research involves
research definition, research design and plan, methodology, tools and techniques,
results and conclusion. The reporting in research can be done by1) Publication - While
doing any kind of research work it is important to communicate the research work for
having a patent over the work which cannot be copied by anyone. Implementing
research and publication of results is very important as it marks the research findings
and helps in the progress of the work with peer- reviewed journals. Publishing a
research report recognizes research work and assesses it for better quality. It is also
a progressive step for people researching the same thing. 2) Presentation- The
documentation of research findings can be structurally analysed and represented in
order to communicate the research report to the audience and peers. Different types of

[Type here]
presentation techniques are involved in applied research. An effective presentation
technique must consider effective use of visualization to present the data, the structure
must be clean and simple without overload of information. Presentation Technique can
include using relevant technology for the purpose and having a deep knowledge about
the topic to be presented

11. Explain the concept of research ethics.

There is a range of literature that tends to analyse and inspect the theoretical
framework as far as research ethics is concerned. Based on the existing theories,
diverse approaches towards research ethics can be analysed. Some of the key
concepts of research ethics involve factors such as integrity, rules & regulations,
confidentiality, moral and ethical guidelines (Cascio, 2018). The integrity of the data
collected depends upon the relevance of the data source. Also, accurate interpretation
of the data collected falls within the ambit of integrity. In case of primary subjects,
there should be clear consent and transparency while collecting the data. On the other
hand, collection of data should be associated with due acknowledgments. The rules
and regulations involved with research involve the compliances that need to be
followed at each step of the research. The various layers of the research, namely,
setting up of research objectives, establishing hypothesis and subsequent data collection
and analysis should be conducted with due protocol. One of the key concepts of
research ethics is the maintenance of confidentiality, especially during collection of
primary data. The target group of samples should be kept anonymous unless they give
documented consent to revealing their identities. The moral and ethical obligations
demand that the researcher strictly adhere to the code of conduct associated with data
collection and analysis (Cascio,2018). The findings obtained from a research should be
represented in an unbiased and objective manner with no scope of manipulation.
Overall, these are the underlying principles of the ethical framework associated with
research.

12. Review the following Code of Conduct and summarise in your own words the key principles of
responsible research:
https://www.nhmrc.gov.au/about-us/publications/australian-code-responsible-conduct-
research-2018
Certain underlying principles have been recommended in order to ensure an ideal
roadmap for completing a research project. These principles may be viewed as integral
elements of any form of research. Integrity, one of the core principles of research
involves producing the exact data gathered during research, this is a part of the moral
obligations that a researcher needs to abide by. Misrepresentation of any form will also
lead to inaccurate basis for further research in the long run. The other key aspect in
this regard is the necessity to attach importance to the minutest of details while
preparing a research proposal. Attention should be paid to each detail right from the
inception of a research idea. This is particularly important to ensure an unbiased
research methodology and result. There should be complete clarity in terms of data
sources, research methodology and analysis techniques that are to be followed. The
colleagues and the target group of subjects should be treated with due respect in
order to ensure effective teamwork and coordination. In cases where Aboriginal and

[Type here]
Torres Strait Islander representatives are involved, due respect towards their cultural
background must be displayed. There should be a thorough obligation while abiding by
the protocols related to the research. Moreover, the duty of a researcher involves
establishing a culture of consistent research within the environment that they operate
in.

13. Outline three examples of applied research tools and how they are applied during research.

The types of tools that may be applied in a research may vary in accordance with
the objectives and target group of samples involved. Some of the most prevalent forms
of research tools include interviews, surveys and observation. In case of interviews, a
specific group of subjects is selected. The subjects may be selected on the basis of a
number of criteria ranging from age, sex, lifestyle, socio-economic backgrounds or
shared skill sets among others (Fletcher, 2017). The subjects are approached with a
set of pre-designed questions that will ideally aim at obtaining key insights. During
interviews, consents are obtained from the subjects and the purpose and intention of
the questionnaire are clarified. Surveys, another prime example of a research tool, also
involve approaching a set of target groups of subjects with the intention of investigating
certain parameters relating to the research. The feedback or opinions of the
respondents are obtained and analysed to check the presence of certain patterns. The
feedback in this case may range from rating certain parameters on a pre-designed
scale or judging the degree of consent to a particular topic. A consistent pattern of
responses usually helps to arrive at a conclusion regarding the prevalent mindset and
the future scopes of interventions. The observational method of approaching a
research involves monitoring the activities of a subject in a systematic manner. In this
case, it needs to be ensured that the subject is present in a natural environment so
as to eliminate any chances of manipulation. The observed activities of the subject
throw light on the relevant research findings.

14. Give three examples of applied research methods and outline how they are applied during
research.

Applied research, as a subject, offers a multi-faceted approach when it comes to

adopting and implementing specific methodologies. The type of methodology to be
followed solely depends on the purpose of the research. The problem solving
methodology is one of the more prominent forms of prevalent applied research
methodologies (Pasmore & Woodman, 2017) . This approach is designed to offer a
range of feasible solutions to a specific problem. For example, an organization may be
facing issues while trying to manage its logistics for a period of time. In response, the
organization may seek to conduct applied research based on problem solving
methodology to find the range of solutions to its logistical problems. Quantitative
approach, on the other hand, is used specifically to refer to or compare a certain type
of data. For instance, an organization might decide to compare financial data of the
last five months and based on the results, design certain future roadmaps. In this case
quantitative methodology will be ideal as the research will deal with comparable data
(Pasmore & Woodman, 2017). Qualitative data, on the other hand, analyzes behavioral
patterns of a target group of subjects to arrive at certain conclusions. For example, an

[Type here]
organization which aims at assessing its current organizational culture and modify it
within feasible limits, may apply qualitative methodology. It may involve placing certain
motivational stimuli in front of the employees and observing their changes in attitudes, if
any, over a period of time.

 stating the number of samples they intend

to base their research on

[Type here]
 explaining how they determined the
sample size

 explaining whether it is a valid sample

size for the planned project

 describing how reliable the results of the

research should be, given the intended
sample size

 describe how the research results will

prove (or disprove) their original
hypothesis

 summarising any limitations that the

research design could have on the
validity of the results

 describing how the integrity of the data

collected and analysis tools used will
optimise the relevance of the research?

Prepare a research proposal or plan using

industry specific and relevant terms to
communicate detailed and complex
information, requirements and
recommendations including:

 a description of their research task

(purpose, hypothesis, context)

 organisation and legislative

considerations (policies and procedures,
legislation and codes of conduct)

 a full description of the data collection

and analysis methods, theories, tools and
techniques to be used

 the technology and technology services

that will be used to support data collection

 the number of samples that they intend to

base your research on

 how reliable the results of the research

should be, given the intended sample
size

 limitations to their proposed research

strategy, including the reliability and
validity of the data?

Use at least one form of technology and one
technology service to collect data for their
research task and then summarise the data?

Access at least one other source of

information relevant to the research task and
summarise the data/information?

Use the predetermined

methods/tools/techniques to statistically
analyse the data to identify and describe
trends, changes or patterns?

Assess their research findings to establish the

impact of the research on the organisation and
stakeholder requirements?

Use mathematical information to confirm the

integrity of their data, including:

 the population/sample size and how it

compares to the planned sample size

 a review of data for accuracy and

completeness

 analysis of whether any data shows

opposing or conflicting information

 how their chosen tools are suitable for the

intended purpose

 whether the findings are complete

(hypothesis/purpose is fully addressed)

 how legal requirements have been

adhered to

 how effective the research strategy was

 further research requirements and

approach?

Documenting and presenting research:

 in a manner consistent with the

stakeholder requirements

 including:

o research summary (purpose,

hypothesis, findings,
surprising/important/outlying results)

[Type here]
o methods used (how they carried out
the research, collected data and
performed an analysis)

o results obtained (recorded in an

appropriate format)
o trends, changes or patterns

o relevance and impact of results on

the organisation and stakeholders
o accuracy of data and analysis

o further research required (including

the approach to be taken)

 using industry specific and relevant terms

to communicate the information,
requirements and recommendations?
