REFLECTION PAPER

José Protacio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda, commonly known as Jose Rizal, is a
Filipino national hero who was known for his significant role in securing his country’s
independence from Spanish colonization and government. He is famous for his works
mainly, El Filibustirismo and Noli Me Tangere. Both novels contain the experiences and
struggles of some Filipinos under the Spanish friars and government. His proposed
reform was for Spain to colonize the Philippines, granting his fellow Filipinos the same
freedoms enjoyed by Spanish settlers. His observations of the brutality the Spanish
government inflicted on his fellow countrymen gave rise to this notion.

Through Jose Rizal and his writing, Filipinos gained a sense of solidarity and identity as
well as a national consciousness, uniting them in their aspirations for freedom and
equality. His writings, especially El Filibustirismo and Noli Me Tangere, exposed the
oppressive conditions faced by Filipinos under Spanish colonial rule. Through vivid
storytelling, he depicted the harsh socioeconomic inequalities, exploitation, and
injustices prevalent in Philippine society before. These works served as a mirror,
reflecting the struggles of the Filipino people and awakening a collective consciousness
about their shared predicament. Additionally, he was known for his idea of peaceful
reform, which is encapsulated in his famous quote, “The pen is mightier than the
sword”. This emphasized the transformative power of his ideas, education, and
enlightenment in effective positive change. He believed that through intellectual and
moral awakening, the Filipino people could challenge the existing system and work
towards a more just and equal society without resorting to violent revolution.
Furthermore, his willingness to give his life for the sake of Philippine independence
made him a martyr and symbol of struggle against colonial oppression. His execution
fueled the flames of nationalism and inspired Filipinos to stand up against the injustices
committed by the Spanish authorities.

Rizal's contribution to the Philippines marks within the Filipinos mind and heart. As a
youth, the best course of action would be remembering and understanding the
achievements and sacrifices made by Rizal. Through this, we could relate ourselves to
modern issues and have an opinion. Additionally, Rizal inspires me to fight for what is
best, not for me, but also for the people that surround me. His legacy serves as a
reminder that individuals, especially the youth, can play a pivotal role shaping a just and
progressive society.
