Passages of the Holy Quran

Main Themes and Significance

Ayat-ul-kursi
● Oneness of Allah
● Everything belongs to Him in the earth and skies
● Nothing can be done without His will.
● Allah’s knowledge is unmatched and complete
● Supremacy and authority of Allah.
● His eternity and kingship.
● Allah is above human needs and weaknesses.
● He Has control over everything.
● Concept of Allah’s throne
Ref: “o people! You are dependent on Allah, and only Allah is the independent,
the most praiseworthy” (35:15)
“Allah is He (that is) free of all wants, worthy of all praise”. (31:26)
● Develops avoidance of shirk and affirms the belief of Muslims to worship Allah
only.
● The sense of alertness of Allah makes Muslims careful in their deeds.
● The authority and power of Allah develop humbleness and dependence upon Him
only.
● Mercy and forgiveness motivate us to perform repentance and give hope. ∙ Convince
to prepare for the day of the judgment.
● Prophet [PBUH] advised Muslims to recite it after every Prayer, at night, and
before leaving home to attain wisdom and protection from Almighty Allah.
● Protects us from calamities and difficulties.

PASSAGE # 2
Surah-al-Anam
● Makki passage.
● Tawhid, attributes of Allah and refusal of shirk.
● Allah is the creator of everything.
● Originator of heavens and earth.
● Refusal of the Jews and the Christian’s concept of Allah’s son.
● Allah is aware of everything.
● The only worthy of worship is Allah.
● Above of human vision and wisdom.
● Only He can manage all affairs.
Ref: “He is the originator of the Heavens and the Earth”. (2:117)
“He knows what is before or after or behind them.” (2:255)

b)
● Reinforces the concept of the oneness of Allah which makes them true
monotheists.
● The clearer concept of Tawhid makes man dependent upon Allah only.
● Logical refusal of the concept of His son removes all confusion and develops avoidance
of shirk.
● Allah’s knowledge develops carefulness for deeds.
Ref: “And He is with you wherever you are”. (57:4)
● Motivates to acquire knowledge.
● Develops gratefulness to Allah and submission to Him.
● Helps to understand that shirk is an unpardonable sin.
● Tafseer states that when this surah was begin revealed seventy thousand angels were
respectfully accompanying it.
● They also for the forgiveness of the Muslims who recite it.

PASSAGE # 3
Surah Fussilat / ha meem al sajda:
● Revealed in Makkah, immediately after the conversion of Hamza [R.A] in the courtyard
of Kaaba while the Prophet [PBUH] refused the bribe of Makkans.
● Explains that natural objects and cosmic are the signs of Allah’s powers.
Allah is the only worthy of worship.
● Praise and worship the creator, not the creations.
● Allah is the creator.
● Avoidance of shirk.
Ref: “But if anyone denies faith, Allah stands not in need of any of His creatures.”
(3:97) “Behold! In the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alterations of
night and day there are indeed signs for men of understanding”. (3:190)
b)
● Develops the habit of observation and meditation which helps to acknowledge the
existence of true God.
● Helps to strengthen faith in tawhid.
● The authority of Allah develops obedience to Allah.
● Saves from shirking and makes a man a true monotheist.
● Develop trust and bond with Allah.
Ref: “Undoubtedly in the creation of heavens and the earth and the alternation
of night and day are the signs for the intelligent”. (3:190)
PASSAGE # 4
Surah Ash-Shura
● Revealed in Makkah, some verses were revealed in Madina later.
● The Makkans were expressing doubts of the message of the Quran and this passage was
revealed in response.
● A similar message was given to the previous Prophets and in the previously revealed
passages.
● Allah is the creator and Lord of Heaven and Earth.
● The Most High and Supreme.
● Concept of angels and their praise to Allah.
● Angels pray for human being forgiveness.
● Allah’s mercy and forgiveness.
Ref:” Ask them, to whom belongs all that is in the heavens and on the earth?
Say, to Allah….”

● Helps Muslims to understand the messages sent by Allah by His messengers.


● The Lordship of Allah makes man modest and humble.
● Develop avoidance of pride and arrogance.
● Develop tolerance and respect for other religions.
● The mercy of Allah motivates us to repent and gives hope for Akhirah.
● Develops trust in Almighty Allah.
● The concept of angels and their presence develops a careful attitude towards deeds.
Ref: “If anyone does evil or wrong his soul, but afterward seeks Allah’s
forgiveness, he will find Allah Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful”. (4:110)

PASSAGE # 5
Surah al Ikhlas
● Revealed in the Makki period when Jews asked the Prophet [pbuh] to
describe Allah to compare it with their description of God.
● They questioned the physical features, power authority, and family of God.
● This passage was revealed in response to their questions.
● It mentions Allah's existence and tawhid.
● He is eternal.
● Negates the concept of polytheism.
● He has no partners, relatives, or son.
● He is not dependent upon anyone and alone is enough to manage all
affairs.
Ref: “That is Allah, your Lord! There is no God but He, the creator of
all things”.

b)
● Negates the Christian and Jewish concept of Allah’s son.
● Affirms and strengthens the Muslim's belief in Allah and His
oneness.
● Eliminates all forms of shirk.
● Equivalent to one-third of the Holy Quran.
● Sense of God’s presence and knowledge develops avoidance of shirk.
● The concept of His unmatched attributes and authority makes man humble and
modest.
● The Prophet [PBUH] encouraged Muslims to recite this passage to purify their
faith.
● Ref: “Allah alone is the Creator of all things, and He Alone is the
Dominant over all”. (13:16)
