Groundhog Day

Every year, on 2 February, thousands of people get up very early in the morning and go to a small field called
Gobbler’s Knob two miles outside of downtown Punxsutawney in Pennsylvania. They start to arrive at 3 am while
it is still cold and dark. By 5 am they will be dancing, watching entertainers, buying warm hats and scarves, t-shirts
and buttons (badges) with pictures of a small furry rodent on them, and waiting for the sun to rise.

At around 7 am, a group of men wearing top hats walk onto a stage to start the official Groundhog Day celebrations.
These men, called the Inner Circle, take a small brown groundhog out of his burrow and all the people cheer.

The groundhog is called Punxsutawney Phil. According to local tradition, if Phil sees his shadow, gets scared and
returns to his burrow, there will be six more weeks of winter. If he does not see his shadow, there will be an early
spring (and good weather coming soon).

Punxsutawney's event is the most famous of many Groundhog Day festivals held in the United States and Canada.
It is broadcast on news and weather channels, and also streamed live on the web. Punxsutawney has been
celebrating Groundhog Day since 1886. The tradition goes back to the old Christian celebration of Candlemas, which
falls on the same date. According to the official Groundhog Day website, it was brought to Pennsylvania by early
settlers from Europe.

But how good are Phil’s weather predictions? Not very. Records show that, in over 130 years, Phil has been correct
just 39% of the time.

In the 1993 hit movie Groundhog Day, Bill Murray played a man who tried again and again to get to
the celebrations. Since then, people use the term ‘Groundhog Day’ when they want to talk about something that
happens repeatedly.

How to Protect the Earth at Home

Take a realistic approach to protecting the earth and first consider what you can do in your own home. It is in
the simple everyday steps that one can make a difference.

Make your own non-toxic cleaning products. Doing this will reduce the use of plastics because you are reusing
plastic containers to hold the cleaning products. The ingredients are also biodegradable which means it is gentler
on the environment.

Use cloth bags at the grocery store and for all your grocery needs. Make sure you always have them on hand.
You don't have to limit their use to the grocery store. If you don't have a cloth bag with you when you are shopping,
ask yourself if you need a bag at all.

Explore the idea of purchasing energy-efficient appliances. They may cost more but in the end you will save money
because they use less energy. Replace regular light bulbs with their energy efficient counterparts. You pay a little
more, but the life of the bulb is significantly longer.

Set up a compost bin and compost your kitchen scraps. All plant-derived foods, coffee grounds and tea leaves can
be composted. Have a small container in your home to place items in. When the storage container gets full, transfer
the waste to an outdoor bin. Use the resulting rich fertile soil in the garden.

Grow an organic garden. Being able to rely on yourself for fresh produce is very rewarding. Share your harvest with
neighbours, put anything that is left in jars and keep it for the winter. If you don't have the space or time to grow
a garden, shop locally and support local farmers.

Reuse clothing. Shop at second-hand shops, garage sales and pass clothing items on to friends and family. Consider
doing this with toys too. When you do buy toys, choose ones that are built to last. So many of the plastic toys
available fall apart quickly and end up in the trash.
