SHORT WAVE DIATHERMY
PHYSIOLOGICAL EFFECT OF HEAT
due to heat therapy there is rising in temperature. a. Increased metabolic activity b. Increased blood flow c. Stimulation of neural receptors in the skin or tissue This changes in the tissue be produced by local, general or remote effects. WHAT IS SHORT WAVE DIATHERMY Is a treatment that uses electromagnetic energy to produce deep heating in joints and soft tissues. This form of heat can be applied to deeper structures than other forms of heat treatment. Shortwave diathermy (SWD) is a modality that produces heat by converting electromagnetic energy into thermal energy. INTRODUCTION Diathermy is therapeutic treatment commonly prescribed for muscular and joint associated pain. The term diathermy means through heating or producing deep heating directly in the tissue of the body. Dia- through thermy –heat or temperature It stimulate the circulation, relive pain, enhances rate of recovery of healing the tissue. PRINCIPLES OF DIATHERMY before injury, the dipole molecule of body tissue arranged on the basis of polarity. When any tissue damage is takes place, distribution become irregular and deviates from polarity based arrangements. Under the influence of electric filed , they rotate according to the polarity of their charge in the direction of the field lines and gets rearranged and tends to acquire its previous stages of polarity. CHALLENGES OF DIATHERMY as the subcutaneous layer is fatty, direct delivery of heat to the deep layers of the tissue is not possible. Diathermy involves uneven an uncontrolled delivery of the heat therefore sometimes instead of the target tissue , surrounding tissue gets affected. BENEFITS OF DIATHERMY instance heat delivered provides pain relief and better flexibility. reduces inflammation Improves circulation Accelerate healing TYPES OF DIATHERMY Short wave diathermy Long wave diathermy micro wave diathermy Ultrasound diathermy Laser diathermy DEFINITION SWD is modality that produce heating via conservation of electromagnetic energy to thermal energy. The pattern of the heat produce depends upon Frequency Types of SWD unit water content of tissue. Current frequency is – 10-100Mhz The commonly used medical work having frequency of 27.12Mhz with wave length of 11 meter MODALITIES Ether continuous or pulsed Continuous SWD is the technique of choice when uniform elevation of temperature is required in deep tissues and inside joints. Subacute or chronic conditions respond well to continuous SWD, to have the ability to relieve pain and muscle spasm, resolve inflammation, reduce swelling, promote vasodilation, and increase soft tissue extensibility and joint range of movement. PSWD- application of series of short pulses of swd so that short periods of SWD interrupted by gapes when there is no SWD. whereas acute lesions are better treated with pulsed SWD. It is applied for 20 min at the maximum tolerable dose TYPES OF SWD INDUCTIVE FIELD CAPACITIVE FIELD INDUCTIVE FIELD Place the patient in electromagnetic filed Current flowing within the coil produces a rotating magnetic field CAPACITIVE FIELD Uses the patient’s tissue as a part of the circuit. The tissues electrical resistance produces the heat TYPES OF ELECTRODE 1flexible pads Space plates Coil or cable The monode The diapole Factor influence field distribution in S.W.D •Space--- •Wrapping flexible pads in towel •Air when using flat plate. DURATION OF TREATMENT usually from five to 20 minutes depending on indications and dosage. Treatments can be done on daily or every other day. The traditional course of treatments consists of 15 to 20 sessions and can be repeated after one week. CONTRAINDICATION
SWD is contraindicated in areas with metal implants and in patients with
pacemakers or implanted deep brain stimulators. Electromagnetic waves may selectively heat water; therefore, areas with excessive fluid accumulation, such as edematous tissue, moist skin, eyes, fluid-filled cavities, and a pregnant or menstruating uterus, should be avoided for both SWD and microwave treatment. Also avoid in spinal cord stimulators, surgical implants, and copper-containing IUD
