What’s In

In the previous module, you have learned the emergence of Filipino opera, the
characteristics of Filipino operatic plays and how they realized their inner talent and
passion for opera.

Here, you will discover the story and emotional content of a musical play. You will be
able to identify different characteristics of plays and get to know who the famous
personalities in the world of musical plays are.

What’s New/What Is It
The picture shows a famous plays and artist, it shows
that Filipino culture is valuable, our performing art has
become rich, colorful, and vibrant. Hence,
performances we see today are mere products of the
cultures that have influenced the country through the
years.
Let us explore how musical plays evolved and
https://cutt.ly/ajp3c3Z contributed to our culture.

The musical play is a popular and generally lighter form of musical drama than the opera.
The themes are usually more contemporary, and the musical melodies more manageable
by the average singer. The acting is less intense and dramatic. The choreography and
dance sequences provide visual breaks from the ongoing plots.

BROADWAY MUSICALS

The first major Broadway musical was Showboat, which featured the popular mode of
transport in the American frontier. Since then, musicals have presented other themes:
Siamese royalty in The King and I, English aristocracy in My Fair Lady, Austrian history in
The Sound of Music, medieval English tragedy in Camelot, and interracial gang rivalry and
romance in West Side Story. Many Broadway musicals were also made into films.

Broadway musicals are family

entertainment with themes and texts
which are generally light and easy to
understand. These may include the
problems of everyday life, such as
love and romance, social acceptance,
jealousy and intrigue, and adventure. The singing is usually amplified, unlike the
operatic quality of classically trained voices.

Lea Salonga on Broadway

4
One Filipino artist who attained international status on both
London’s West End and Broadway is Lea Salonga. She is best
known for her portrayal of Kim in the musical Miss Saigon, a role
for which she won the prestigious Tony Award for theater in the
USA and the Laurence Olivier Award in London

Miss Saigon is a musical by Claude-Michel Schönberg and

Alain Boublil, with lyrics by Richard Maltby, Jr. It is a modern
adaptation of Giacomo Puccini’s opera Madame Butterfly,
which also tells the tragic tale of a doomed romance wherein
an Asian woman is abandoned by her Caucasian lover. Miss
Saigon first opened at West End in London in 1989 and closed
in 1994.
https://tinyurl.com/plrdpw5t
Salonga was the first Asian to play the role of Eponine in the musical Les
Misérables, based on the novel of the same title written in 1862 by the French author
Victor Hugo. She also played the role of Mei-Li in Flower Drum Song.

The Phantom of the Opera

The Phantom of the Opera is a broadway musical by Andrew
Lloyd Webber and Richard Stilgoe, with lyrics by Charles Hart
and music by Lloyd Webber. The story focuses on a beautiful
singer Christine Daaé as she is seduced by a mysterious disfigured
musical genius known as The Phantom of the Opera. It is one of
the longest-running Broadway musicals of all time.

Les Misrables

Les Misérables, known as “Les Mis,” is a musical

composed in 1980 by French composer Claude-Michel
Schönberg with libretto by Alain Boublil. Les Mis tells the
story of paroled convict Jean Valjean who, failing
attempts to find work as an honest man, breaks his
chains and conceals his identity to live his life again.

as the historical influences that shaped it through the centuries. The dramatic forms
