CHAPTER-2: Polynomial
Relation between the zeroes and coefficient of a polynomial
A polynomial is an algebraic expression consisting of multiple terms. There are
various types of polynomials such as linear, quadratic, cubic……..
A real number k is a zero of a polynomial of p(x) if p(k)= 0.

LINEAR POLYNOMIAL [ p(x)=ax+b]

The general form of linear polynomial is p(x)=ax+b, its zero is –b/a or minus of
constant term divided by coefficient of x.

QUADRATIC POLYNOMIAL ( p(x)= ax2 + bx +c)

General form of quadratic polynomial is ax2 + bx +c. There are two zeroes of
quadratic polynomial.
Factor Theorem: If a is zero of a polynomial p(x) then (x – a) is a factor of p(x).

Sum of zeroes =

Product of zeroes =

CUBIC POLYNOMIAL {p(x)= ax3 + bx 2+ cx + d}

General form of cubic polynomial of ax3 + bx 2+ cx + d where a≠0. The sum of

zeroes of the cubic polynomial =

Sum of the product of zeroes taken two at a time=

Product of zeroes =

75.
Q3 Form a quadratic polynomial whose zeroes are -5 and 7.
Q4 Form a quadratic polynomial whose zeroes are -12 and –7.
Q5 Form a quadratic polynomial whose one zero is 5 and the sum of zeroes is 21.
Q6 Find the zeroes of a quadratic polynomial 6x2 – 7x -3 and verify the relation
between the zeroes and the coefficients of the polynomial.
Q7 Find the zeroes of a quadratic polynomial x2 + 5x + 6 and verify the relation
between the zeroes and the coefficients of the polynomial.
Q8 Find the quadratic polynomial sum of whose zeroes is 10 and product of zeroes
is 16.
HLP
Q1 If one zero of the polynomial (a2 +9)x2 + 13x + 6a is reciprocal of the other,
find the value of a.
Q2 If α and β are zeroes of x2 + 7x + 12, then find the value of 1/α+1/β – 2αβ

Q3 Find α-1 + β-1, if α and β are zereos of the polynomial 9x2 – 3x – 2.

Q4 Find the zeroes of the quadratic polynomial 5x2 – 4 – 8x and verify the
relationship between the zeroes and the coefficients of the polynomial.
Q5 If p and q are the zeroes of x2 + px + q, then find the values of p and q.

Q6 Find a relation between p and q, if one zero of x2 + px + q is 37 times the other.

Q7 In the following questions, a statement of assertion (A) is followed by a statement

reason (R). Choose the correct choice as:
(a) Both assertion (A) and reason (R) are true and reason (R) is the correct
explanation of assertion (A).
(b) Both assertion (A) and reason (R) are true but reason (R) is not the correct
explanation of assertion (A).
(c) Assertion (A) is true but reason (R) is false.
(d) Assertion (A) is false but reason (R) is true.

(i) Assertion (A): x² + 4x + 5 has two zeroes.

Reason (R): A quadratic polynomial can have at the most two zeroes.

(ii) Assertion (A): A quadratic polynomial whose zeroes are 5+ √2 and 5 - √2 is x² -

10 x+ 23.
Reason (R): If a and ẞ are zeroes of the quadratic polynomial p(x), then p(x) = x² –
(α + β) x + αβ.
