or not, and people have started to consider an alternative option. College is not worth the cost
because even people with degrees don’t have good financial situations, important jobs that do not
rely on colleges have less emphasis, and there are many overlooked opportunities outside of
college.
Due to inflation, people are making less money in recent years, despite obtaining a
college degree. According to Source C, a graph that measures the wages of entry-level jobs over
time shows that “hourly wages for young college-educated men in 2000 were $22.75, but that
dropped by almost a full dollar to $21.77 by 2010” (Source C). Despite the college degree in
their possession, which took years of time and effort to receive, people have been starting to
receive lower salaries than in years prior, decreasing the value that a college education has for
job income. College is not worth the cost nowadays because “the rewards for the time, energy,
and money that young people put into college are less than they were a decade ago” (Source C)
People who graduate college and search for job opportunities don’t receive benefits that match
the effort and money they applied towards their college education, deeming college a waste of
time and money to many who work a low paying entry-level occupation. Another category that
relates to detrimental financial situations is debt. According to Source F, in a poll given to the
general public, “a record share of students are leaving college with a substantial debt burden, and
among those who do, about half (48%) say that paying off that debt made it harder to pay other
bills” (Source E). Numerous people with college degrees leave their universities with a worse
financial burden than they started with, which is detrimental to their living standards.
The stress and pressures that revolve around the idea of college can be a lot. This is the
reason that many people feel the need to obtain a college degree. However, what people to do not
realize is that by choosing to go to a trade school or straight to work, they are getting a better
“‘In schools, we create artificial learning environments for our children that they know to be
contrived and undeserving of their full attention and engagement. Without the opportunity to
learn through the hands, the world remains abstract and distant, and the passions for learning will
not be engaged’”. Hands on experience is the best that it can get and it is something that
traditional schools may not have to to offer. Peter Theil, the co-founder of PayPal, completed his
law degree at Stanford University, however, he know debates his decision to even go. Thiel
wishes and encourages students to search beyond just attending college, “But [he] is convinced
that the social pressure for students to pursue ‘lower-risk trajectories’ in their career choices will
lead to less innovation in the future” (Source E). By getting an earlier experience in real world
The idea of going to college has become so force fed that people only believe
Many people believe that it is necessary to go to college and obtain some sort of degree.
It can be argued that going to college is worth the cost. According to Source F, “adults who
graduated from a four-year college believe that, on average, they are earning $20,000 more a
year as a result of having gotten that degree” (Source F). Many adults are experiencing better job
opportunities and therefore higher wages as a result of obtaining a college graduate. However,
