CE 135 - Shear in Beams Sample Problem

The document discusses selecting the dimensions of a concrete beam to resist a maximum shear force of 270 kN. It provides solutions for beams with no web reinforcement, minimum web reinforcement as required by code, and web reinforcement providing twice the concrete shear strength. The required beam width and effective depth are calculated based on the shear strength provided by concrete and steel reinforcement.

Shear in Beams

Problem 2. A beam is to be designed for loads causing a

maximum factored shear of 270 kN, using a concrete with fc’=
35 Mpa and fy=414 Mpa. Proceeding on the basis that the
concrete dimensions will be determined by diagonal tension
(shear stress), select the appropriate width b and effective
depth d (a) for a beam in which no web reinforcement is to be
used, (b) for a beam in which only the minimum web
reinforcement is provided, and (c) for a beam in which web
reinforcement provides shear strength Vs = 2Vc . Follow the ACI
Code requirements, and let d = 2b in each case.
Shear in Beams
Given : 𝑉𝑢 = 270 𝑘𝑁; 𝑓𝑐 ′ = 35 𝑀𝑃𝑎; 𝑓𝑦 = 414 𝑀𝑃𝑎 ; 𝑑 = 2𝑏
Requirement : 𝑆𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑎𝑙 𝑑𝑖𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑠𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑠 𝑏𝑤 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑑 = 2𝑏
Solution :
A1) No web reinforcement is to be used Assuming ACI 11.4.6.2 is satisfied. That
is, 𝑀𝑛 and 𝑉𝑛 can be developed even
Strength Requirement without shear reinforcement
∅𝑉𝑛 ≥ 𝑉𝑢 ; 0.75𝑉𝑛 ≥ 270,000 ; 𝑉𝑛 = 360,000 𝑁
𝑉𝑛 = 𝑉𝑐 + 𝑉𝑠
If no web reinforcement is to be used, then 𝑉𝑠 = 0
𝑉𝑛 = 𝑉𝑐 = 360,000 𝑁

𝑉𝑐 = 0.17𝜆 𝑓𝑐′𝑏𝑤 𝑑 (simplified equation of ACI 11.2) ; 𝜆=1.0 (normal-weight conc.)

360,000 = 0.17 1 35 𝑏𝑤 2𝑏𝑤

𝒃 𝒘 = 𝟒𝟐𝟑𝒎𝒎 and 𝒅 = 𝟖𝟒𝟔𝒎𝒎

Shear in Beams
Solution :
A2) No web reinforcement is to be used Complying ACI 11.4.6.1
Strength Requirement
∅𝑉𝑛 ≥ 𝑉𝑢 ; 0.75𝑉𝑛 ≥ 270,000 ; 𝑉𝑛 = 360,000 𝑁
𝑉𝑛 = 𝑉𝑐 + 𝑉𝑠
If no web reinforcement is to be used, then 𝑉𝑠 = 0. However, to omit the web
reinforcement, ACI 11.4.6.1 requires 𝑉𝑢 ≤ 0.5∅𝑉𝑐
𝑉𝑢 = 0.5∅𝑉𝑐 ; 𝑉𝑛 = 0.5𝑉𝑐

𝑉𝑐 = 0.5(0.17)(𝜆) 𝑓𝑐′𝑏𝑤 𝑑 (simplified equation of ACI 11.2) ; 𝜆=1.0 (normal-weight conc.)

360,000 = 0.5(0.17) 1 35 𝑏𝑤 2𝑏𝑤

𝒃 𝒘 = 𝟓𝟗𝟖𝒎𝒎 and 𝒅 = 𝟏𝟏𝟗𝟔𝒎𝒎

Shear in Beams
B) Minimum web reinforcement is provided
Strength Requirement
∅𝑉𝑛 ≥ 𝑉𝑢 ; 0.75𝑉𝑛 ≥ 270,000 ; 𝑉𝑛 = 360,000 𝑁
𝑉𝑛 = 𝑉𝑐 + 𝑉𝑠

𝑉𝑐 = 0.17𝜆 𝑓𝑐′𝑏𝑤 𝑑 (simplified equation of ACI 11.2) ; 𝜆=1.0 (normal-weight conc.)

𝐴𝑣 𝑓𝑦𝑡 𝑑 ( vertical stirrup per ACI 11.4.7.2)
𝑉𝑠 =
𝑠
If only minimum web reinforcement is to be provided
𝑏𝑤 𝑠 0.35𝑏𝑤 𝑠
𝐴𝑣 = 𝐴𝑣,𝑚𝑖𝑛 = 0.062 𝑓𝑐′ 𝑏𝑢𝑡 𝑛𝑜𝑡 𝑙𝑒𝑠𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑛
𝑓𝑦𝑡 𝑓𝑦𝑡

0.000886 𝑏𝑤 𝑠 0.000845 𝑏𝑤 𝑠
Shear in Beams
B) Minimum web reinforcement is provided
Strength Requirement
𝐴𝑣 𝑓𝑦𝑡 𝑑
𝑉𝑛 = 0.17𝜆 𝑓𝑐′𝑏𝑤 𝑑 +
𝑠
0.000886 𝑏𝑤 𝑠 (414)(2𝑏𝑤 )
360,000 = 0.17(1) 35 𝑏𝑤 2𝑏𝑤 +
𝑠
𝒃𝒘 = 𝟑𝟔𝟐𝒎𝒎 and 𝒅 = 𝟕𝟐𝟒𝒎𝒎

Note: The addition of minimum shear

reinforcement results in the reduction of sectional
area by 27% (that is from 423𝑚𝑚 x 846𝑚𝑚 in
solution A1 to 362𝑚𝑚 x 724mm)
Shear in Beams
C) If Vs =2Vc
Strength Requirement
∅𝑉𝑛 ≥ 𝑉𝑢 ; 0.75𝑉𝑛 ≥ 270,000 ; 𝑉𝑛 = 360,000 𝑁
𝑉𝑛 = 𝑉𝑐 + 𝑉𝑠 = 𝑉𝑐 + 2𝑉𝑐 = 3𝑉𝑐

𝑉𝑐 = 0.17𝜆 𝑓𝑐′𝑏𝑤 𝑑 (simplified equation of ACI 11.2) ; 𝜆=1.0 (normal-weight conc.)

360,000 = 3(0.17)(1) 35 𝑏𝑤 2𝑏𝑤
𝒃𝒘 = 𝟐𝟒𝟒𝒎𝒎 and 𝒅 = 𝟒𝟖𝟖𝒎𝒎
