our sophisticated equipment, dedicated after sale service and extensively global service network of agents and

dealers will provide you safe marine voyage. Headway dedicates to research and development of marine equipment,

in return, Headway becomes more and more prestigious in this field. The VDR you use is designed and constructed

to fully comply with IMO Resolution MSC.333 (90) and meet requirements of following regulations:

1. Regulation 18, Chapter V, The International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, 1974

2. MSC.333 (90) Adoption of Revised Performance Standards for Shipborne Voyage Data Records (VDRs)

3. IEC 61996-1:2013 Marine Navigation and Radio Communication Equipment and Systems-Shipborne

Voyage Data Recorder (VDR)-Part 1: Performance Requirements, Methods of Testing and Required Test Results.

4. IMO A.694 (17):General Requirements for Shipborne Radio Equipment Forming Part of the Global

Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) and for Electronic Navigation Aids.

The operation of the VDR should be carried out only by authorized personnel. Do please read the instructions

carefully before operation. Any confusing technical question, please contact manufacturer or local authorized

agents for necessary help.

1. System Hardware

VDR (HMT-100A) consists of Main Cabinet Unit (MCU), Remote Acquisition Unit (RAU), Remote Alarm

Panel (RAP), Protective Data Capsule (PDC), Float-free Protective Data Capsule (FPDC), Bridge Microphone Unit

(BMU), and External Microphone Unit (EMU). Considering some hardware components are introduced in

Installation Manual, the Operating Instructions just focus on operation of main MCU hardware systems

accordingly.

1.1 Main Cabinet Unit

Components of Main Cabinet Unit (MCU):

P1-MCU Structure

1.1.1 Main Board

Terminal, image information acquisition, data download interface and long-term recording medium are

integrated on the MB to collect digital signals and analog signals from Radar, Electronic Chart Display and

Information System (ECDIS), Microphone (MIC), Very High Frequency (VHF), Global Positioning System

(GPS), Automatic Identification System (AIS), GyroCompass, SpeedLog, Echo Sounder, Anemometer, Autopilot

System, M/E Control System, Fire Alarm System and Navigational Signal Light System.

Operators can operate regularly once cables are connected correctly under the instruction of Installation

Instructions. MB structure in MCU is shown as below:

1. ① Data Download from PDC/FPDC/Long –term Record Medium is used to download recorded data in
the equipment from PDC, FPDC or Long-Term Record Medium (LTRM).

2. ② Data 2and ③Data 1are used to record data for the latest 30 days, which can be read by data

download interface① or card reader after removed.

3. ④ Terminals on MB: Connect to VDR components like Remote Acquisition Unit (RAU), Remote

Alarm Panel (RAP), Protective Data Capsule (PDC), and MICs. Meanwhile, terminals connect to GPS, AIS,

SpeedLog and other necessary equipments.

4.⑤ Radar interface and ⑥ ECDIS interface are designed to collect images from radar and ECDIS.

5.⑦ LAN interface is used to collect images in Network format from radar and ECDIS.

1.1.2 Earthing

Earthing is the safe earthing point which must be earthed before use for liable running.

Power Supply Unit (PSU) provides power to the whole system. It is fixed on the upper side in MCU. Its

operating panel is on the left side.

P3-PSU Structure ⑤Fuse

1. ⑤Fuse

Fuse Specification: AC250V/2A

AC fuse fuses when AC input overflows in order to protect PSU. Please replace fuse with the same

configuration and check whether AC input is abnormal. Contact after sale service personnel if it continues to fuse.

2. ②PSU Valid Identification

PSU shall be changed regularly within the marked date on PSU valid identification. Because battery

and PSU are integrated into a whole unit, thus please replace them together rather than the battery only.

3. ③Terminals

Input external voltage: AC220V, DC24V.

4. ④Operating panel is on the left of PSU, whose specific structure is as below:

II Battery Switch (SW3)

SW3 is switched at “ON”: battery obtains access to PSU.

SW3 is switched at “OFF”: separation of battery and PSU.

Switch shall be switched at “OFF” when the equipment is not used.

III Power SW1 and Start Switch SW2

When power switch SW1 is closed, Wire 5 becomes closed-circuit.

When power switch SW1 and start switch are closed together, Wire 1 starts.

IV Power Indicative Light

Power indicative light is on when power is outputting.

V Charging Indicative Light

Charging indicative light is on when battery is charging.

1.2 Remote Alarm Panel

Remote Alarm Panel is Software V1.4.

RAP is an important monitoring unit, which shows VDR remote display and alarms if there is any error.

Equipment consists of three parts: LCD panel, LED indicative lights and function controls.

LCD panel is a display interface which displays VDR running state.

LED indicative lights show VDR running state. LED indicative lights flash to alarm when VDR comes into

errors.

A. Introduction to Display:
LCD Panel:

There are two layers on LCD panel: the upper one is state of power supply and the number of

errors; the lower one is VDR running state or paging error information.

There are three kinds of VDR display state of power supply: VDRAC, VDRDC and VDRBA.

2. System Software
2.1 General Introduction
This section mainly introduces the way to playback software from CD provided by Headway manufacturer.
Software running requirements are as below:
① More than 600MB CPU Processor
② More than 128MB Memory
③ More than 400GB hard disk
④ Operating system: Win 9X/Win NT/2000/XP/Vista/Win7/Win8
⑤ Browser: Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or above
⑥ More than 100Mb network card
⑦ More than 1024*768 resolution
2.1.1 Copy Software to Computer
Get CD disk and Ethernet cable from cover of MCU in red circle. Insert CD disk in computer CD/DVD drive
at first.

Video configuration consists of 4 VGA input and 4 LAN input. Click on “VGA MODE” and “LAN MODE”

separately to activate configuration, and then save current configuration parameter in configuration file by “Save

Video” button.

LAN model can connect 4 LAN signals.

Fill in IP and PORT in software configuration according to IP and PORT of radar and EСDIS, and then click

on “Save Video”.
2.2.3 Audio Configuration

VDR defaults to 4 BMUs, 4 EMUs and 2 VHFs.

Fill in position information according to position of equipment connected. You can fill in by yourself if there

are no alternatives. BMU and EMU can be extended 2 more separately. Click on “Save Video” after modification.

Remove Data1 & Data2 and replay the data by connecting to computer with card reader. You will find card

reader in your computer. Take Data1 for example, (SDXC in this case) is our card reader.

Click on or play→“Replay from file”, and then Open card reader (SDXC in this case) by double

click.

Double-click on the shortcut or run “VDRRealTimePlayer.exe”. Please close firewall before operation

The bar mainly includes 5 tools: “play”, “stop”, “pause”, “open file” and “slide bar” as below:

2.6.2 Function Introduction to Playback Interface

Function menu consists of Conning, Ais, Alarm/Status, Transducers, Hull Street, Sound, Radar 1, System

Event, Ship Info, NMEA Source, Analog Digital, Chnsentence, Radar 2, ECDIS 1, ECDIS 2.

Basic information of navigation is shown in this interface, and the data comes from navigational equipment

including GPS, SpeedLog, GyroCompass etc.


Introduction to Conning Playback Interface:

Time & Position GPS data Display UTC time, latitude and longitude. “N/A.” refers to default data.
Speed collected by VDR consists of the relative velocity of water and

First: indicator points at ship sailing routes directly according to

This function mainly displays power running state. AC power supplies to
VDR when AC power indicative light turns green.

Conning interface consists of Time&Position (GPS), Engine Telegraph, Heading (Gyro), Speed (KN),
Engines/Shafts revs, Remote Controls and other information as below:

① Inner “display information”

Choose certain ship and right click, and then AIS information appears like below. The information

includes MMSI, position, navigational status, heading, speed, course over ground and distance, among

which distance refers to distance between the certain chosen ship and your ship, as below:

② See tool “Info”, for example:

Display ship information in “protective area” by choosing “Guard Zone” in file “Show Info.”

Display all ship information by choosing “Selected All” in file “Show Info.”

Choose “Guard Zone” in file “Hide Info” to hide ship information in protective area.

Choose “Selected All” in file “Hide Info.” to hide all the ship information.

③There is a line of words at the bottom of this page: “AIS Pointing At” is a geographic position of

marking position and “Distance” is current distance of certain chosen ship.

Introduction to AIS Playback Software:


Show Info. Guard Zone
Info. Selected All “Guard Zone” displays zone selected (circle).
Hide Info. Guard Zone “Selected All” displays or hides ship information from
Selected All AIS.

Zoom&Guard Zone The first slide bar Contraction of part of zone: 01NM ~99NM.
The second slide bar Change the zone of circle selection(circle size): 01NM ~
99NM.
Backlight Adjust brightness of the background color.
Center of “Guard Zone” moves to 4 different directions in
parallell through these keys. Ship’s default position is at
“Up”,“Down”,“Left”, the center of “Guard Zone”, that is, center of the circle. All
Operating keys “Right”, “Center” ships move same distance, through which we can observe
larger zone ship information. All ships will move to
original position when click on “Center”. In the
meanwhile, all ship move to corresponding position whose
center is your ship.

T15-AIS Playback Structure

Alarm/ State Interface Instruction

The page is used to play back all alarm information: confirmed information, time, source, description and

condition.
All NMEA alarm sentences received from external devices connected to VDR will be analyzed and displayed
in this page. Such as ALR,ALA,FIR,WAT sentences in the format below

2. Every audio track slide bar is used to adjust volume, and audio track is close when slide bar is on the left.

3. Screen shows “VDR Sound Meter” when audio track is mute or close.

NMEA Input
Following interface can display dynamic NMEA input received. “NMEA” displays NMEA input, “Source”
displays equipment from which the signals are collected. Through the keyboard shortcut "Ctrl + Shift + channel
number", you can choose to specify the channel NMEA sentences, return to use Ctrl + Shift + F10. For example:
Ctrl + Shift + B, window shows a serial port B channel.
