Hypothesis - How-To-Write-A-Hypothesis-Activity-For-3rd-5th-Grade Ver 1
A hypothesis is like an intelligent guess or prediction you make before you do a science
experiment. It’s your way of saying what you think will happen based on what you observe. It’s
like saying, “I think this will happen if I do that.”
You use an “if ... then ... because ...” statement in a hypothesis. You say what might change (if),
what you expect to happen (then), and why you think it will happen (because). It’s your way
of planning and thinking about what might occur during your science investigation.
Remember, it’s okay if your hypothesis is only sometimes correct. That’s the exciting part of
doing experiments – learning and discovering new things!
Example
If a plant gets more water, then it will grow taller because water is like a special fuel that
helps plants make their own food through photosynthesis. So, if we give a plant extra water,
we predict it will get taller as a result. Let’s test it out in an experiment to see if our guess
is correct!
• Figure out what you will change and what you will measure.
• Write your hypothesis using an “if ... then ... because ...” statement.
Step 5: Testability
Remember:
• A hypothesis is like making an educated guess about what you think will happen.
• Be creative and have fun exploring your ideas!
