LEARNING ACTIVITY 1

Sketch
Objectives

Participants will be able to identify their areas of strength and areas to improve as leaders.

Materials

 Handout 1: Sketch

 Flipchart and marking pen

Time

25 minutes

Instructions

1. Pass out Handout 1. Ask participants to quietly and independently sketch a picture of
themselves being a great leader on the left upper side of the line (2 minutes).

2. Ask them to jot notes below their picture of the strengths they have that make them a
great leader (3 minutes).

3. Instruct them to jot notes on the lower right side of the line on things they would like to
improve that would make them an even better leader (3 minutes).

4. Direct each person to stand and pair up with someone at a different table. If there is an
odd number of learners, have one group of three. Explain that each person will have 1
minute to share one leadership strength (left side), and one leadership growth opportunity
(right side), and then switch. They may share pictures as well if they want. As facilitator,
tell them when it is time to switch to keep things moving.

LEARNING ACTIVITY 1, continued

5. Ask each pair to combine with another pair. A group of six may be needed depending on
numbers. Now give them 30 seconds to share the exact same thing except that this time
ask them to share the other person’s story. Again, they may share pictures if they want.
Time them and tell them when to switch.

6. Have each of these groups move and take over a table together. When they are settled, tell
them to pick a temporary leader (it will change over the course of the day) by pointing to
the ceiling and when you count to three, pointing at the leader they wish to choose.

7. Ask each leader to summarize a few positives and negatives from each team and
document on a flipchart. Then ask everyone at the table to briefly introduce themselves.

8. Finish up by explaining that the positives documented on the flipchart map to leadership
competencies and say which ones. Also, explain the negatives do as well. Today, the
workshop will help participants to reinforce the positives and to improve the negatives.
