10 (a) Using a ruler and a pair of compasses only, construct triangle ABC such that AB = 8 cm,
AC = 6 cm and angle CAB = 75o. (2 marks)

(b) Shade a region Q within the triangle such that AQ < BQ and CQ  3 cm. (2 marks)

11 A square of area 8.5 cm2 is mapped onto another square of area 68 cm2 by a transformation represented

13 Tap A can fill a tank in 20 minutes while Tap B can fill the same tank in 15 minutes. When the tank is
full, it can be emptied by C in 30 minutes. Initially when the tank is empty, all taps are opened. After 5
minutes tap B is closed. Find the total time taken for the tank to be full. (3 marks)

14 The base and height of a triangle to the nearest 2 mm are 6.4 cm and 5.0 cm respectively. Calculate the
percentage error in its area, giving answer to 2 decimal places. (3 marks)

15 In January 2018, the population of a town was 200, 000. It is estimated that the population increases at
annual rate of 6%. Find the approximate population of the town in January 2023. (2 marks)

16 The co – ordinates of the longest chord of a circle are A ( 0, 2 ) and B ( 6,10 ) . Find the equation of the
circle in the form x 2 + y 2 + ax + by + c = 0 where a, b, and c are constants. (3 marks)

Answer any five questions from this section in the spaces provided.

17 The 2nd and 5th terms of an arithmetic progression are 8 and 17 respectively. The second , 10 th and 42nd
terms of the AP form the first three terms of a geometric progression. Find

(a) The first term and the common difference of the AP. (3 marks)

(b) The first three terms of the GP and the 5th term of the G.P (4 marks)

(c) The sum of the first 4 terms of the G.P. (3 marks)

18 (a) Complete the following table for the equation y = 2 x 2 − x − 15 for −3  x  3.5 (2 marks)

19 The income tax rates of the year 2023 were as shown in the table below:-

In a certain month of the year Madam Awuor monthly earning were as follows;-

House allowance Kshs.22 500
Commuter allowance Kshs.7 500
Medical allowance Kshs.4 000
Madam Awuor has a life insurance policy for which she pays Kshs.6 000 per month and for which she
is allowed 15% as insurance relief. She is also entitled to a personal tax relief of Ksh.1 240 per month.
Calculate;
(a) her taxable income per month. (2 marks)

(b) her net tax per month. (5 marks)

(c) Apart from income tax and insurance premium, the following monthly deductions were made;-
NHIF of Kshs.250, service charge of Kshs.150, Loan repayment of Kshs.6000 and co – operative
shares of Kshs.2 600. Calculate Madam Awuor’s monthly net income from her employment.

22 (a) A number is selected at random from the numbers 90, 91, 92, 93 and 94. A second number is then
selected at random from the numbers 2, 3, 4 and 5. Afterwards a quotient is obtained by dividing
the first number selected by the second number.

(i) Complete the probability space in the following table.

(ii) Determine the probability that the quotient obtained is a whole number. (2 marks)

(iii) Determine the probability that the quotient obtained is a recurring decimal. (1 mark)

(c) In a shooting practice the probability that a soldier will hit the target in his first attempt is 60%.
This probability increases by 10% in the second attempt. The soldier shoots at the target twice.
Determine the probability that:
(i) The soldier will miss the target only once. (3 marks)

(ii) The soldier will miss the target in both attempts. (2 marks)

23 In the year 2023, a farmer took a sample of 50 maize cobs to the A.C.K show. The lengths of the maize
cobs were measured and recorded as shown in the table below.
