How Data moves through the Internet

Network Devices
Network devices, also known as
networking hardware, are physical
devices that allow hardware on a
computer network to communicate and
interact with one another.
For example, host, IP address, Network,
Repeater, Hub, Bridge, Switch, Routers,
Network Devices

Host
IP address • Host are any devices which send and
receive traffic.
Network
Repeater • Host can be computers, servers, routers,
switches, or even smartphones and IoT
Hub devices.
Bridge •

Host
IP address • An IP address is the identity of each
Network host.
Repeater SRC 75.44.128.17

Switch DST 75.44.128.17

Network devices

• An IP (Internet Protocol) address is a unique

Hos identifier for a node or host connection on
an IP network. An IP address is a 32 bit
IP address binary number usually represented as 4
Network decimal values, each representing 8 bits, in
the range 0 to 255 (known as octets)
Repeater separated by decimal points. This is known
Hub as "dotted decimal" notation
Bridge • Example: 140.179.220.200
Switch • 10001100.10110011.11011100.11001000

disks, thumb drives.
Routers
Network devices

Hos Repeater – A repeater operates at the

IP address physical layer. Its job is to regenerate the
signal over the same network before the
Network signal becomes too weak or corrupted to
Repeater extend the length to which the signal can
Hub be transmitted over the same network.

Network devices
HUB

Hubs are simply multi-port repeaters

A hub receives data and then sends it in full
to all connected devices (hosts). All ports of
the hub operate at the same speed and are in
a collision domain (which includes all
connected network devices).
Network devices
Bridge

A bridge is a device used to connect

multiple LANs together with a larger Local
Area Network (LAN).
• bridge only have two port.
• Bridges learn which host are on each side
Network devices
Switch

Switches are a combination of Hubs and

bridges.
• Multiple posts
• Learns which Hosts are on each port
• Switches facilitate communication
within a network.
Network devices
Switch

• Switches facilitate communication

within a network.
• Hosts on a network share the same IP
address space
Network devices
Router
• Routers facilitate communication between
networks.
• Provides a traffic control point security, filtering
and redirecting.
• Have IP addresses in the networks they are
attached to
• Gateway- each host way out of their local
network
