REGRESSION ANALYSIS AND ANOVA (HASTS112)

Tutorial 3

1. Describe the following terms used in regression analysis;

a. Coefficient of Determination,
b. Coefficient of Variation, and
c. Analysis of Variance.

2. Below are measurements of density of water at different temperature.

Temperature(˚C) 0 20 40 60 80 100
Density(kg/cc) 1 0.997 0.983 0.983 0.973 0.9558

We wish to describe the data by the model Yi=β0+β1Xi+єi where X represents temperature
and Y represents density.

a. Find the least squares estimates of  0 and 1 . Write down the equation of the
regression line.
b. Construct the analysis of variance table for the regression model and test the
significance of the regression at α=0.05.
c. Calculate the 95% confidence interval for the slope of the line and the intercept.
d. Calculate the coefficient of determination R2 and interpret your answer.
e. What density would you expect for temperature of 28?

3. Re-do question 2 above using SPSS/R and compare your results.

4. A simple linear regression analysis was carried out on output (Yi) and hours worked (Xi).
The following partial SPSS output was obtained.

b. Dependent Variable: Y

a. Write down the equation of the fitted line.

b. Use the F-test to test the significance of the regression, state the null and alternative
hypotheses clearly and interpret your results.
c. Calculate the coefficient of determination and interpret your result.
d. Calculate the 95% confidence interval for the intercept of the line.
e. Test the hypotheses, H0: β0=0 against H1: β0≠0.

5. The following data set relates maize usage to the number of animals on the farms
surveyed. 12 farms were surveyed.
