Types of DC Motor
• Shunt Motor
• Series Motor
• Long Shunt Compound Motor
• Short Shunt Compound Motor
DC Shunt Motor
• The armature coils and the shunt
field coils are connected in parallel.
• Source voltage is equal to shunt
field voltage.
• Centrifugal Pumps, Lifts, Weaving
Machines, Lathe Machines,
Blowers, Fans, Conveyors, Spinning
Machines, and other applications
where a consistent speed is
required.
DC Shunt Motor
𝑉 = 𝐼𝑠ℎ ∗ 𝑅𝑠ℎ
𝐼 = 𝐼𝑠ℎ + 𝐼𝑎
𝐸𝑏 = 𝑉 − 𝐼𝑎 𝑅𝑎
Where:
𝑉 − 𝑆𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑐𝑒 𝑉𝑜𝑙𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒
𝑅𝑠ℎ − 𝑆ℎ𝑢𝑛𝑡 𝐹𝑖𝑒𝑙𝑑 𝑅𝑒𝑠𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒
𝐼𝑠ℎ − 𝑆ℎ𝑢𝑛𝑔 𝐹𝑖𝑒𝑙𝑑 𝐶𝑢𝑟𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑡
𝑅𝑎 − 𝐴𝑟𝑚𝑎𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑒 𝑅𝑒𝑠𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒
𝐼𝑎 − 𝐴𝑟𝑚𝑎𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑒 𝐶𝑢𝑟𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑡
𝐸𝑏 − 𝐵𝑎𝑐𝑘 𝐸𝑀𝐹
DC Series Motor
• The armature coils and the series field
coils are connected in series.
• Source current is equal to series field
and armature current.
• A series motor has very high starting
torque and is commonly used for
starting high inertia loads, such as
trains, elevators or hoists. This
speed/torque characteristic is useful
in applications such as dragline
excavators, where the digging tool
moves rapidly when unloaded but
slowly when carrying a heavy load.
DC Series Motor
𝑉 = 𝐼(𝑅𝑠 +𝑅𝑎 ) + 𝐸𝑏
𝐼 = 𝐼𝑠 = 𝐼𝑎
Where:
𝑉 − 𝑆𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑐𝑒 𝑉𝑜𝑙𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒
𝐼𝑠 − 𝑆𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑒𝑠 𝐹𝑖𝑒𝑙𝑑 𝐶𝑢𝑟𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑡
𝑅𝑠 − 𝑆𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑒𝑠 𝐹𝑖𝑒𝑙𝑑 𝑅𝑒𝑠𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒
𝐼 − 𝑆𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑐𝑒 𝐶𝑢𝑟𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑡
𝑅𝑎 − 𝐴𝑟𝑚𝑎𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑒 𝑅𝑒𝑠𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒
𝐼𝑎 − 𝐴𝑟𝑚𝑎𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑒 𝐶𝑢𝑟𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑡
𝐸𝑏 − 𝐵𝑎𝑐𝑘 𝐸𝑀𝐹
DC Long Shunt Compound Motor
• The series field coils are
connected in series with the
armature coils while the shunt
field coils are connected across
the series combination.
• Compound Motor has higher
starting torque but has finite
speed at no load. It is used to
driving rolling mills, cutting tool
etc..
DC Long Shunt Compound Motor
𝑉 = 𝐼𝑠ℎ 𝑅𝑠ℎ
𝐸𝑏 = 𝑉 − 𝐼𝑠𝑒 (𝑅𝑠𝑒 +𝑅𝑎 )
𝐼 = 𝐼𝑠ℎ + 𝐼𝑠𝑒

𝐼 − 𝑆𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑐𝑒 𝐶𝑢𝑟𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑡
𝑅𝑎 − 𝐴𝑟𝑚𝑎𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑒 𝑅𝑒𝑠𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒
𝐼𝑎 − 𝐴𝑟𝑚𝑎𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑒 𝐶𝑢𝑟𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑡
𝐸𝑏 − 𝐵𝑎𝑐𝑘 𝐸𝑀𝐹
DC Short Shunt Compound Motor
• The series field coils are
connected in series with the
supply voltage while the shunt
field coils, and the armature
coils are connected in parallel.
• Compound Motors has higher
starting torque but has finite
speed at no load. It is used to
driving rolling mills, cutting tool
etc..
