Very good! What do you call these two The sky lantern festival is also known as Yi Peng
types of lanterns? Festival and the floating lantern festival is also
called Loy Krathong Festival.

Very good. Let us have a further discussion

about what Ying Peng Festival is.

This event is about the launching of lanterns

which are small hot air balloons. Each
release of a sky lantern is a petition, small
prayer or good wishes of the person who
released it. The Chiang Mai area has been
the scene of mass sky lantern release.

(Teacher will show the picture)

And this event is held on the full moon of In the western calendar, this usually falls in
the 12th month of the traditional Thai lunar November.
calendar. If we use the western calendar,
what month does it fall?
That’s right!
There are some meanings of the releasing
of the sky lantern. Okay please read.

(Teacher will call a student) (Student will read what is on the presentation)

Why do you think the releasing of sky I think that the sky lantern symbolizes bad luck

money from the sender.
That’s good. Okay next, please read.

Why do you think the releasing sky lanterns Because many Thais believe that these sky

Yes, that’s right. And the last meaning,
please read.

(Teacher will call a student) (Student will read what is on the presentation)

What is Pra Ged Kaew Ju La Mannee? Pra Ged Kaew Ju La Mannee is the crystal Chedi
in heaven in which the Buddha’s hair is kept.

And what is meant by veneration? Veneration is a respect or awe inspired by the

dignity, wisdom, dedication or talent of a
person.
Very good.
Now that we know what the Yi Peng Festival
is, let us proceed to the second type of Yes Ma’am.
lantern festival which is Loy Krathong
Festival. Are you familiar with the flower
named lotus?

Let me see. How will you describe lotus? Lotus is a flowering plant that grows on the
surface of water. Meaning it floats on the
surface of some bodies of water like lakes.

That’s great!
Since the lanterns in Loy Krathong festivals It looks like lotus because Loy/Loi literally means
are called floating lanterns, how do they “to float”, while krathong refers to the “lotus-
look? shaped receptacles”.

The same with Yi Peng Festival, this event

also takes place on the evening of the full
moon of the 12th month in the traditional
Thai lunar calendar. And in the western
calendar, it usually falls in the month of
November.

How do Thais celebrate Loy Krathong

Festival? Please read.

(Teacher will call a student) (Student will read what is on the presentation)

Why do you think they also float lanterns on Because aside of doing petitions, small prayers
water though they already have the and good wishes, they also believe that this
launching of sky lanterns? festival originated in an ancient practice of
paying respects to the spirits of water.

How do they show respect to the spirits of They decorate their krathong with elaborately
water? folded banana leaves, flowers, candles, and
incense sticks. They put low value coins on the
krathong as an offering to the spirits and float it
on a river, canal or pond lake during the night of
full moon.
Exactly!
Tradition is said to have begun in the 13th
century when a young queen made a small
boat adorned with candles and send it
down the river.

This festival is also a ritual and giving honor. It is for Phra Mae Kongka, the goddess of water.
For whom is it dedicated?

That’s good!
And the construction of colorful boats was a
way of not only giving thanks for the
abundance of water, but also a way to seek
forgiveness for overuse and pollution.

Today in Thailand, Loy Krathong is also a

way for people to make a wish and look
toward the future.

And that is the Lantern Festival of Thailand.

Since you participated well in our
discussion, give yourself a pak ganern clap. (Students will do the clap)
At this moment I will show you a video Yes Ma’am.
about how to make a sky lantern. After
watching, I will ask some questions about it.
Is it clear?

(Video Presentation)

What did you notice about the video? The steps in making sky lanterns are easy and
the materials needed are easy to find.

Why do you think that sky lanterns float in Because of the fire. It serves as the fuel of the
the air? lantern, and it produces warm air which is lighter
than cool air.

That’s great, dear students! Kindly give

yourself a silent clap. (Students will do the clap)

your task is to make your own sky lanterns
by using the materials I assigned to you last

the lantern will be based on the video you
