IGCSE - Chemistry - Material Changes - Chemical Changes

The document discusses chemical changes and how they differ from physical changes. Chemical changes result in the formation of new substances, as evidenced by changes in properties like color, odor, or formation of gases. Examples given include burning wood, cooking food, ripening fruit, and corrosion of coins in vinegar.

MATERIAL CHANGES: CHEMICAL CHANGES

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

▪ What are chemical changes?

▪ How to identify the chemical changes?
MATERIAL CHANGES: CHEMICAL CHANGES

1 What is meant by matter?

2 What type of changes occur in matter?

3 What type of changes can be classified as

physical changes?
MATERIAL CHANGES: CHEMICAL CHANGES

▪ Matter is something which has mass and occupies space.

Solid Liquid Gas

MATERIAL CHANGES: CHEMICAL CHANGES

▪ Matter cannot always be seen.

▪ Whatever is in our surroundings is made up of ‘matter.’
MATERIAL CHANGES: CHEMICAL CHANGES

▪ Matter can change and these changes are of two types.

They are:
1) Physical change
2) Chemical change
MATERIAL CHANGES: CHEMICAL CHANGES

Physical changes

▪ Physical changes are the changes that affect the physical appearance of matter, such
as shape, appearance, and size.

▪ For examples: breaking of glass, peeling the banana.

Introduction to Chemical changes

What changes are happening in the below

images?

▪ Does it change the size, shape of

matter?

▪ Does the new substance is

formed?
MATERIAL CHANGES: CHEMICAL CHANGES

Introduction to Chemical changes

Cooking an egg changes egg to

omelet, new substance formed

In these only size or shape

of matter is changing.

Burning of wood- changes wood

into ash- new substance formed
MATERIAL CHANGES: CHEMICAL CHANGES

Introduction to Chemical changes

▪ Such changes where the new substance is formed are known as Chemical Changes.
MATERIAL CHANGES: CHEMICAL CHANGES

▪ A chemical change is any change that causes a new substance to be formed.

For example: Camp fire, roasting of the marshmallow

▪ Light and heat, formation of gas, and change in colour are the signs of chemical change.
MATERIAL CHANGES: CHEMICAL CHANGES

1 What type of change is seen in the

preparation of food?
MATERIAL CHANGES: CHEMICAL CHANGES

▪ When you cut the vegetables and cook them, chemical changes occur.

▪ All the ingredients start changing its nature and physical appearance and a new
substance is formed.
MATERIAL CHANGES: CHEMICAL CHANGES

▪ Examples of Chemical
Change:
MATERIAL CHANGES: CHEMICAL CHANGES

1 Baking of cakes is which type of change?

MATERIAL CHANGES: CHEMICAL CHANGES

Baking of cakes:
▪ When you bake a cake, the ingredients
go through a chemical change. They
form new substances.

▪ The properties of the new substance formed

are not the same as that of the original
substance.
MATERIAL CHANGES: CHEMICAL CHANGES

▪ That is why the baked cake has a

taste that differs from eggs, milk,
and flour.
MATERIAL CHANGES: CHEMICAL CHANGES

1 How do fruits or vegetables get ripened

and what type of change it is?
MATERIAL CHANGES: CHEMICAL CHANGES

Ripening of fruits:
▪ When we expose a bunch of bananas to
the air, after a few hours, it slowly
changes its color and results in the
spoiling of bananas.
MATERIAL CHANGES: CHEMICAL CHANGES

▪ This is because the gas present in the air (O2) reacts with particles present in the
banana. When it is exposed for a long time, the substance breaks down into
new substance.
▪ When this happens, food may change color or have a bad smell.
MATERIAL CHANGES: CHEMICAL CHANGES

1 What is the type of change when a paper

is torn?
2 Is burning a chemical change?
MATERIAL CHANGES: CHEMICAL CHANGES

1 What happens when coin is placed in

vinegar water?
MATERIAL CHANGES: CHEMICAL CHANGES

▪ Look closely at some pennies (Coins).

MATERIAL CHANGES: CHEMICAL CHANGES

▪ Take salt water and add 150 milliliters of vinegar. Stir until the salt and vinegar dissolves.
MATERIAL CHANGES: CHEMICAL CHANGES

▪ Dip a penny halfway into the

liquid. Keep it for some time.
▪ Then remove the penny..
MATERIAL CHANGES: CHEMICAL CHANGES

▪ Compare the half you held with the

half that was in the liquid.
▪ You see an evident difference in
both the half.
MATERIAL CHANGES: CHEMICAL CHANGES

1 What happens when wood is burnt and

what type of change it is?
MATERIAL CHANGES: CHEMICAL CHANGES

▪ A burning log goes through a

chemical change. The log
starts off as solid wood. When
you set the log on fire, it
changes chemically.
MATERIAL CHANGES: CHEMICAL CHANGES

▪ Carbon dioxide gas and ash

form. The properties of
these substances are very
different from those of
wood.

▪ That is because they are

made up of different
combinations of elements.

MATERIAL CHANGES: CHEMICAL CHANGES

▪ Chemical change makes the matter look different.

▪ When a substance is undergoing chemical change, we can consider it as a chemical reaction.

▪ A chemical change is where in which a new substance is formed.

▪ Light and heat, formation of gas, changing in color are the signs of chemical change.
