 Media and Information Literacy

Communication
- is derived from the Latin word “communis” which means common.
- This involves the process of transmitting and delivering information to an intended audience for whatever
purpose it may be such as forming relationships, exchanging meanings, making transactions, influencing
choices, stimulating aesthetic appeal, and more importantly, for creating and producing ideas.
 Elements of Communication
Source - is like the point of reference from where or from whom the message is crafted.
Message - or the heart of the communication process that connects the source to the
audience.
Channel or medium - is the tool used to deliver the message from the source to the
receiver.
Receiver - refers to the people who will decode the message. Ideally, the way the
source understood the message should be the same way the receiver
Noise - refers to the unwanted yet unavoidable element in communication flow.

Literacy
The ability to identify, understand, interpret, create, communicate and compute, using printed
and written materials associated with varying contexts.
Literacy involves a continuum of learning, wherein individuals are able to achieve their goals,
develop their knowledge and potential, and participate fully in their community and wider society.

Media
The physical objects used to communicate with, or the mass communication through
physical objects such as radio, television, computers, film, etc.
It also refers to any physical object used to communicate messages.

WHAT IS MEDIA LITERACY?

- The ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and create media in a variety of forms.
- It aims to empower citizens by providing them with the competencies (knowledge and skills) necessary to
engage with traditional media and new technologies.

Information
- A broad term that covers processed data, knowledge derived from study, experience, instruction, signals or
symbols.

What is Information Literacy?

Information Literacy
- The ability to recognize when information is needed, and to locate, evaluate, and effectively communicate
information in its various formats.

What is Technology Literacy?

Technology Literacy
- The ability of an individual, either working independently or with others, to responsibly, appropriately, and
effectively use technological tools. Using these tools an individual can access, manage, integrate, evaluate,
create and communicate information.
What is Media and Information Literacy?

Media and Information Literacy


The essential skills and competencies that allow individuals to engage with media and other information
providers effectively, as well as develop critical thinking and life-long learning skills to socialize and
become active citizens.

Forms of Media
Traditional Media – Traditional media covers the kinds of media that were introduced to the market prior to the
invention of the Internet. This includes all kinds of writer or print media like newspapers and magazines. Comics and
books are also included in the print media. Photographs, especially those printed in newspapers or magazines are also
included in the subcategory. Traditional media also covers electronic media which uses electricity and technology to
deliver the message or information.
Broadcast Media – pertains to electronic media like radio sets or television sets.
Film or cinema – pertains to movies that carry audiovisual messages and are usually projected
onto a huge screen in theaters or movie houses.
New Media – refers to media or digital media that developed when the use of computer technology became ordinary
and common in most parts of the world. Any kind of information and communication technology (ICT) is a form of
new media. Its examples are laptop, smartphones, tablet devices, etc.
Mass Media - communication -whether written, broadcast, or spoken- that reaches a large audience. This includes
television, radio, advertising, movies, the Internet, newspapers, magazines, and so forth.
Social Media – refers to internet-maintained computer programs that could be installed in personal computers or
portable devices, the sole purpose of which is to connect with other people using the same platform.
Mobile Communications Technology - Mobile technology is technology that goes where the user goes. It consists
of portable two-way communications devices, computing devices and the networking technology that connects them.
