Module 3 Practice Problems – Photons
Use the data tables provided in Module 3 example section as needed.
1. Calculate the MU required to deliver 300 cGy to a depth of 8 cm with 10x20 cm field at 100 cm SSD using 6 MV beam photons. Round equivalent field size to nearest mm (tenth decimal place). 2. In reference to question #1, calculate the dose at Dmax (maximum tissue dose). 3. In reference to question #1, calculate the exit dose at 15 cm depth. 4. Calculate the difference between the PDD for a 6 MV (dmax = 1.5 cm) 12x12 field being treated at 100 cm SSD to a depth of 10 cm and the same field being treated at 125 cm SSD. Is the extended SSD greater or less than the standard SSD PDD and by how much(percentage)? 5. A patient’s treatment MU are calculated to be delivered at 100cm SSD at a depth of dmax. The optical distance indicator (ODI) is mis-calibrated by 1 cm, the resulting SSD = 99cm. Does the dose increase/decrease and by how much? Module 3 Practice Problems – Electrons Calculate the MU settings for the following problems using the tables provided in Module 3 examples. 1. 200cGy to dmax at the 97% isodose line, 6e, 10 cone, 5x10 cm cutout, 100cm SSD 2. 250cGy to dmax at the 90% isodose line, 9e, 15 cone, 12x12 cutout, 103cm SSD 3. 300cGy to dmax at the 90% isodose line, 6e, 6 cone, 3 cm circle cutout, 100.5cm SSD, 0.5 cm bolus, 100 cm source to bolus distance 4. You plan a patient for 180 cGy to dmax at the 90% isodose line, 9e (Dmax = 2.2 cm) , 10 cone, 7x10 cm cutout, 100cm SSD. The therapists couldn’t get 100cm SSD, but they could get 107cm. Calculate the new MU needed to deliver the original Rx? 5. 180cGy to 4 cm depth at the 95% isodose line, 16e, 20 cone, 9x18 cutout, 103cm SSD. 6. Using electron rules of thumb what are the depths of the 80% and 90% isodose lines and the practical range of a 12 MeV electron beam.
