Soal Read the following the text, then choose the correct answer by crossing A, B, C, D OR E!

Text

(1) The film is Roland Emmerich's filn of-days prophecies for their doomsday scenario. It
imagines the world coming to an end of his year.

(2) The film brings off a series of wonders. The movie hits its peak early on. It starts
when Cusack drives a limo through the streets of Los Angeles as freeways and skyscrapers
crumble all around him from the shock of a 10.5 earthquake. The preposterous flying
sequence is equally thrilling. The climax occurs aboard the giant ark, when an equipment
malfunction almost threatens the entire mission.

(3) Unfortunately, the crucial sequence is not filmed or edited with the requisite clarity. In
this film, Emmerich leaves us befuddled as to exactly what is happening to whom.
However, Emmerich' film deserves credit for offbeat casting. Cusack supplies his trademark
hangdog charm. McCarthy has perhaps his best role ever as Peet's cocky. Danny Glover
lends dignity to the role of the tormented president. Chiwetel Ejiofor, as the chief scientist,
brings a moving sense of anguish to a stock role. Platt has fun playing the villain of the
piece, and Woody Harrelson also chews the scenery as a bug-eyed radio prophet trying to
warn his listeners about Armageddon.

(4) All in one, the film's cinematography, production design and visual effects are awards-
worthy. Music also propels the movie. It presents American Idol runner-up. Adam Lambert,
who provides a rousing anthem over the end credits.
From the text above, we know that there are ... characters get involved in the film.

Soal The integration of techonolgy and media can enhance early childhood practice. Successful
integration of technology and media into early childhood programs involves the use of
resources such as computers and the internet in daily classroom practices. True integration
occurs when the use of technology and media becomes routine and transparent — when the
focus of a child or educator is on the activity or exploration itself and not on the technology
or media being used. Technology integration has been successful when the use of
technology and media supports the goal of educators and programs for children, provides
children with digital tools for learning and communicating and helps improve child
outcomes.

As the lives of children, parents, families and educators are infused with technology and
media, early childhood classrooms can benefit from the possibilities of extending children’s
learing through judicious use of these tools. As part of the overall classroom plan,
technology and interactive media should be used in ways that support exiting classroom
development and educational goals rather than in ways that distort or replace them. For
example, drawing on a touch screen can add to children’s graphic repsentational
experiences; manipulating colorful acetate shapes on a light table allows children to explore
color and shape.

By focusing in technology and interactive media as tools— not as ends in and of

themselves— teachers can avoid the passive and potentially harmful use of non-interactive,
linear screen media that is inappropriate in early childhood settings. Intentionally is a key to
developmentally apporopriate use.

Exciting new resources in today’s technology-rich world represent the next frontier in
digital learning for our youngest citizent, leaving it to talented educators and caring adults
to determine how best to leverage each new technology as an opportunity for children’s
learning in ways that are developmentally appropriate.
Which paragraph(s) explain(s) the importance of using technology and media wisely so that
it can support existing classroom practice?

A. 1

B. 2 and 3

C. 2 and 4

D. 3 and 4

E. 4

Pembahasan Jawaban: B

Pembahasan:

Trik: (Baca soal terlebih dulu lalu tentukan kata kunci dari soal kemudian
cari kata kunci pada teks. Kata kunci pada soal tersebut adalah wisely
atau dengan bijaksana.)

Pada paragraf kedua terdapat kata “... judicious use of these tools.” kata
judicious mempunyai makna yang sama dengan wise yaitu bijaksana.

Pada paragraf ketiga pada kalimat “intentionally is a key to

developmentally appropriate use.” yang bermakna tujuan adalah kunci
untuk penggunaan yang tepat secara bertahap. Kata appropriate use

Elementary school teachers in Sanggau regency, West Kalimantan, an Indonesian province

on the island of Borneo that borders Malaysia, are using state radio broadcasts by RRI to
reach students in their homes during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We have various geographic conditions here in Sanggau. Not all areas have internet,” Titis
Kartikawati, a teacher, said in a video conference on National Education Day on May 2. She
said many areas had “blank spots”, a term used to describe places that don’t have access to
internet.

Schools nationwide have been closed since March 15, and students have been instructed to
learn from home to contain the spread of the coronavirus. Students who live in areas where
the internet is readily accessible learn from their teachers through virtual meetings or
recorded videos. In addition, the Education and Culture Ministry has cooperated with state
broadcasting company TVRI to offer television lessons. But those without internet,
electricity or TV require an alternative.

Titis’ school is using radio instead. The school is cooperating with national radio
broadcaster RRI to provide an hour-long educational program for which the teachers
provide the content.

“From Monday to Friday, we take turns. The teachers give all the material [through the
broadcast],” she said, as quoted by Antara news agency. She said all the students were able
to access the radio broadcasts and teachers were able to spend less money because they did
not have to buy additional internet data to cover internet uploads.

She said the students’ parents were from low-income families working in agriculture and
would find it difficult to purchase internet data.

Hamid Muhammad, acting director general of early childhood, elementary and middle
education, said teachers had to be creative when dealing with internet or electricity
limitations.

“We have to think about children who do not have internet, electricity or television. Several
areas use community radio. This is the moment when teachers have to innovate,” he said in
a press conference on Saturday.

Soal This following text is for question number 16 to 20

Water is at the heart of health and well-being for people and nature. Access to it is a human
rights issue recognized by international treaties and declarations, and national standards. It’s
vital for education and economic productivity. Ultimately, it connects the environment to
society.

The most recent statistics (2020) show a general global trend of positive progress in access
to water. The proportion of the global population using safely managed drinking water
services increased from 70.2% in 2015 to 74.3% in 2020. But despite this progress, in 2020,
two billion people still lacked safely managed drinking water. The sub-Saharan African
region has the largest numbers, with 387 million people still lacking basic drinking water
services. Current coverage of access to safe drinking water is estimated at only 54% of the
region’s population.

In South Africa, the right to water is enshrined in the constitution. Before the country’s
transition to democracy in 1994, government policies were focused on the advancement of
the white minority. The development of the country’s water resources wasn’t focused on
improving the position of the mostly black, poor majority. The country has made significant
progress since 1996 in expanding water services, especially within the disadvantaged and
vulnerable communities and rural areas. But inequality in access to basic services is still a
reality. Progress with water supply and sanitation service delivery has been slow and, in
some instances, it’s deteriorating.

In 1994, about 14 million people (35%) in South Africa didn’t have basic water supply
services. The minimum standard of these services is defined as clean, piped water delivered
within 200 meters of a household at a minimum flow rate of 10 liters per minute, for 300
days a year, with any interruption not lasting longer than two days at a time.

The government adopted various policies and programs aimed at sustainable water
development, improving the quantity and the quality of water supply to citizens. This
created a comprehensive legislative framework for the provision of water and sanitation
services.

Soal A – Heinrich Beutow, a German schoolboy

My parents and I were living in a small German town in 1914. I remember everybody
seemed really pleased when they heard about the declaration of war. Our teacher told us all
about the war, and he was really enthusiastic that the war had started the day before.
Naturally, we schoolboys were all brainwashed with great patriotism when war broke out.
My father was an active army officer and I will never forget the day when German soldiers
were marching out to the trains. They were all decorated with flowers. Even horses and
guns were beautifully decorated. And of course all the people were following them. Bands
were playing the music, flags were flying everywhere. There was a strong feeling that
Germany now would go into this war and win it very quickly.
B – Charles Chabot, a British civilian living in Thailand

When the First World War broke out in 1914, my family and I were living in Bangkok,
Thailand. That night I was in a restaurant because we had just finished playing a rugby
game with some German friends and we were all sitting together. We were obviously mixed
up. Germans were sitting next to the English, the English were sitting next to the French and
so on. Everyone was chatting around the table. Suddenly we heard a loud bang at the door.
It was a courier from the French Embassy with the shocking news of the outbreak of war.
None of us here had seen a declaration of war before and we didn’t know what to do.
Should we now get a knife from the table and fight one another or what? After a bit of
discussion we decided that for us war was going to start tomorrow not tonight, and so we
just continued with our party.

C – Horace Calvert, a 14-year-old from London

I can remember how I found out about the war. It was a lovely August morning and I was
going to work for seven o’clock. As I got to the end of Richmond Road, there was a
newsagent’s shop and outside there was a big poster saying that Britain had declared war on
Germany the day before. Later on that day I went into central London, and outside
Buckingham Palace, all the crowds were cheering outside as the King and Queen came out
on the balcony. Everybody was excited. It was very patriotic. People were having a good
time – they were singing ‘Rule Britannia’, ‘God Save the King’ and many other national
songs. I thought it was really good that Britain had joined the war.

What the atmosphere when they decide to delay the war?

A. Happy

B. Chaotic

C. Proud

D. Scared

E. awkward

Soal Scientists have found fossils of animals with tails dating back hundreds of millions of years.
Back then, early fish used their fanlike tails as fins to swim through oceans and escape
predators. As these fish evolved into creatures that lived on the land, their tails started to
change too. Whether they belong to reptiles, insects, birds or mammals, tails serve a wide
variety of purposes. Modern animals use their tails for everything from balance to
communication and finding mates.

Scientists believe that dinosaurs, including the Tyrannosaurus rex, swung their tails side to
side to balance their heavy heads and bodies while walking on two legs. This movement
allowed them to run fast enough to catch their prey. Similarly, present-day kangaroos use
their tail for balance when they leap across the open land. But they don’t just use it as a
counterbalance for their weight – the kangaroo’s tail also functions as a powerful third leg
that can help propel them through the air.

Cats and other animals that climb often have bushy or long tails that help them balance,
kind of like a tightrope walker holding a long pole. Monkeys use their long tail for balance
while swinging through forest tree branches. Many have prehensile, or grasping, tails that
act like hands and allow them to hold onto tree limbs. These tails are so strong that they can
even hold the animal up while it eats fruit and leaves.

Other animals’ tails evolved into weapons. For instance, stingrays have a trademark stinger
tail they can use as a defense when a predator attacks them. Venomous rattlesnakes have
buttons of dried skin on their tail that make a racket when they shake it. This warns any
animals that might threaten the rattlesnake that it’s getting ready to strike.

Many insects also have tails, but they evolved separately from other animals with
backbones, like fish and mammals. Most tailed insects use their tails to lay eggs or to sting
and paralyze hosts or prey. In some animals, like wasps, their tails can do both, as certain
parasitic wasps will lay their eggs inside a host. In the other hand, grazing animals, use their
tails to swat off insects that may be bothering them.

egg in front of Cindelaras. He picked it up and brought it to his hut.

Answer the question!

(1) We often think it very funny if a film shows a woman or a girl screaming and running in
fright at the sight of a mouse or a cockroach. But we don’t consider our own little, secret
fers a laughing matter. Perhaps you shiver at the sight of a snake or an eel, cannot bear to
hear the sound of jagged metal rubbing against metal, or feel uneasy in a lift. Fortunately,
most of us suffer only mild from of fright about certain things. According to psychiatrists,
this is quite normal. It becomes a problem only when the fear develops into a mental
condition that affects all aspects of a person’s life. Studies of thousands of people with an
abnormal dread show that every time they think about- or come into contact with – the
subject of their fear, they show all the physical signs of a person who is facing serious
danger: a racing heart, dry mouth, could sweat and weak knees.

(2) Doctors and psychiatrists welcome publicity about phobias, for this helps to convince
their patients that their petients that their patients that their fears are not unique. It reassures
the patients to know that there are other people who are afraid of the same thing, and it
makes the patients more willing to try to understand what is causing their fear. Once they
realize what in their subconscious is causing their fear, they are half-way to being cured.
Psychiatrists believe that these unreasonable fears are caused by deep-seated reasons,
perhaps a terrifying experience during childhood.

(3) One typical case was Mrs. Marry Batchelor, a London housewife, who suffered from
agoraphobia (fear of open spaces). For twenty-three years, she remains indor. Following
publicity about other agoraphobia cases, she was persuaded to go out for the first time to
watch her son perform with pop group.

(4) Most of use suffer from claustrophobia (fear of being in closed spaces) iin a mild way,
but the real sufferers go about in great fear of being trapped without escape in a lift, in
packed train or in an aircraft. Altogether, there are a hundread and thirty phobias listed in
the medical dictionary, ranging from acrophobia (fear of heights) to xenophobia (morbid
dislike of foreigners). Some phobias are very odd indeed. There are cases of people who
turn cold with terror at the sight of a cabbage leaf, run away in fright at the sight of a brid or
fraint when they hear hear a dog bark. There was even a man who refused to eat anything
that he knew had been touched by someone who had handled matches.

Text 5

Perhaps even more problematic to human welfare in the coming century than a further de-
crease in the availability of fresh water is the impact of climatic disruption on the supply of
food. As with water, global access to food is already questionable. In 2009, the number of
people suffering from protein calorie malnutrition exceeded 1 billion after reaching a low of
around 830 million in the 1990s.

In poor countries around the world, malnutrition underlies roughly one-third of the entire
burden of disease. And roughly 2 to 3 billion people already suffer from micronutrient
deficiencies.

Looking forward, farmers around the world will need to double agricultural production by
2050 in order to keep up with demand from a growing and more prosperous human
population that prefer a more meat-based diet. This doubling of output will need to occur
despite problems already found in agricultural productivity. Water scarcity, as discussed
above, is a major constraint to increasing agricultural production. In addition, roughly one-
third of the Earth's and surface suffers from land degradation from the combined effects of
soil erosion, salinization, nutrient depletion, and desertification.

Finally, the rise of the biofuels industry is generating enormous demand for grain. By in-
creasing grain demand and, as a consequence, demand for arable land and irrigation,
growing grains as biofuels feedstock will be deemed more important than human food
needs. Thus, growing grains for biofuel needs an immediate banning action.

Amid rapidly rising demand for food, in- creasing environmental pressures on food
production, and growing human malnutrition, climate change additionally compromises
both agricultural yields and the nutritional quality of the crops produced. Agricultural
productivity is well known to be sensitive to changes in growing season temperatures.
Observational, longitudinal, and modeling studies all confirm that a 1°C rise in temperature
corresponds to roughly a 10% reduction in yield of the major grains. As temperature rise 2-
6°C over the next century, the reduction in agricultural yield will depend, in part, on our
capacity to adapt and in part, on how temperature variability changes; but, in general, yields
are expected to drop.

The passage implies that.....

A. Farmers around the world will need to multiply agricultural yields by 2050 due to their
high demand.
B. A bigger problem about human welfare in the next century is decrease in the supply of
fresh water.

C. In the end, the rise of the biofuels industry is leading to enormous supply and demand for
crops.

D. Increasing environmental pressures on food production compromises both agri- cultural

yields and the nutritional quality of the crops produced.

E. With the rise of the temperature each year, human beings will eat food of lower quality
than today.

Pembahasan Jawaban: A. Farmers around the world will need to multiply

agricultural yields by 2050 due to their high demand.

Education is often viewed as school in a traditional, formal sense. Many people believe that
true learning can only take place in formal classroom setting. Others feel education occurs
in many different forms and environments. There may not be a definitive answer to the
question of “What is education?” However, we can start thinking about the purpose of
education.

In 1990, UNESCO launched EFA, the movement to provide quality education for all
children, youth, and adults by the year of 2015. The unfortunate reality is that for many
countries, larger issues come before improving the quality of education. How can we
achieve the goals of EFA when the numerous countries around the world are faced with
challenges that seem far too impossible to overcome? The answer lies in attempting to
bridge some of the gaps that prevent developing nations to compete with developed nations.
One example is that of providing greater access to technology and narrowing the ever
widening digital divide. In many ways, the most basic access to technology can serve as a
valuable educational tool. Individuals who are not afforded this access are at disadvantage
when trying to grasp opportunities to make life better for themselves, their families, and
their community.

The situation the author shows in the passage above is best described as follows …

A. quality education fundamentally ensures quality living in all sectors

B. education is essentially everyone's right yet it still has its challenges

C. there are problems in education in spite of it significant role

D. as long as nations compete, education cannot progress

E. absence of an exact definition causes problems in education

(1) At the end of the 20th century, the world is changing in important ways. Until recently,
nations acted independently. Each country did its business and tried to solve its problems
alone. But now, the economy is worldwide and communications technologies have
connected people all over the globe. Many problems are global, too, and can no longer be
solved by individual nations.

(2) Environmental destruction is one of these problems. As the world’s population has
grown and technology has developed, the environment has suffered. Some nations have
begun to try to stop the pollution and the environmental destruction. But the environment is
global-the atmosphere, the oceans, and many forms of life are all connected. Thus, the
solutions require global thinking.

(3) The problem of ocean pollution is a good example. All the oceans of the world are
connected. Pollution does not stay where it begins. It spreads out from every river and every
harbor and affects bodies of water everywhere.

(4) For centuries, people have used the oceans as a dumping place. The quantity of garbage
that ends up in the water is incredible. Five million plastic containers are thrown into the
world’s oceans every day! Aside from plastics, many other dangerous substances including
human waste and chemicals used in agriculture are dumped in oceans. And every year, oil
tankers accidentally spill millions of gallons of oil into the sea.

(5) Some people believe that the oceans are so large that chemicals and waste will
disappear. However, many things, such as chemicals and plastics, stay in the water and
create problems. They eventually float to shore and are eaten by tiny sea creatures. Then the
larger animals that eat the tiny creatures are poisoned and die. Harbors and coasts around
the world have become unsafe for humans or animals.

B. Air pollution

B. Old ways of thinking

C. Global thinking

D. Economy condition

E. Ocean life

Soal Before the grass has thickened on the roadside verges and leaves have started
growing on the trees is a perfect time to look around and see just how dirty Britain
has become. The pavements are stained with chewing gum that has been spat out
and the gutters are full of discarded fast food cartons. Years ago I remember
travelling abroad and being saddened by the plastic bags, discarded bottles and
soiled nappies at the edge of every road. Nowadays, Britain seems to look at least
as bad. What has gone wrong?

The problem is that the rubbish created by our increasingly mobile lives lasts a lot
longer than before. If it is not cleared up and properly thrown away, it stays in the
undergrowth for years; a semi-permanent reminder of what a tatty little country we
have now.

Firstly, it is estimated that 10 billion plastic bags have been given to shoppers.
These will take anything from 100 to 1,000 years to rot. However, it is not as if there
is no solution to this. A few years ago, the Irish government introduced a tax on
non-recyclable carrier bags and in three months reduced their use by 90%. When
he was a minister, Michael Meacher attempted to introduce a similar arrangement
in Britain. The plastics industry protested, of course. However, they need not have
bothered; the idea was killed before it could draw breath, leaving supermarkets free
to give away plastic bags.

What is clearly necessary right now is some sort of combined initiative, both
individual and collective, before it is too late. The alternative is to continue sliding
downhill until we have a country that looks like a vast municipal rubbish tip. We may
well be at the tipping point. Yet we know that people respond to their environment.
If things around them are clean and tidy, people behave cleanly and tidily. If they
are surrounded by squalor, they behave squalidly. Now, much of Britain looks pretty
squalid. What will it look like in five years?

Another reason that makes Britain so dirty is the pavements are also stained with chewing
gum that has been spat out and the gutters are full of discarded fast food cartons.

Soal Siem Reap is a small town near the world famous temple of Angkor Wat. The town is
charming and worth exploring, with some fine examples of Khmer and French colonial
architecture set among the more modern developments. Nowadays, visitors are flocking in,
using it as a base for visits to the nearby temples.

From the 9th to the 14th centuries, when Europe was still struggling out of the Dark Ages,
the Cambodian Empire of Angkor covered most of present-day Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam,
and Thailand. The heart of this empire during the 12th century was the ancient capital of
Angkor Thom, near present day Siem Reap, the site of the world’s largest temple
complexes, which were rediscovered in 1861.This spectacular city was built over 30 years
under the reign of King Suryavarman II (1113-1150). The area covers about 400 square
kilometres and is full of the finest examples of Khmer art and architecture. Tourists are
always amazed at the scale of the place.

In Angkor Wat you will find more than 100 stone monuments and temple buildings, each of
which contains countless statues, sculptures and reliefs that have weathered extremely little
over the last 800 years. To see the whole thing can take several days. The most important
temples to visit in the area are Angkor Wat, especially at sunrise or sunset; Angkor Thom,
the remains of the capital; Ta Prohm, a palace overgrown by jungle; and Bayon.

Visas are required to enter Cambodia. You can obtain one on arrival at Siem Reap
International Airport for $20, and 1 passport photo is required per person. You will also
need another passport photo for the Angkor Temple Entrance Pass. Please ensure you take
comfortable walking shoes, light clothing and plenty of water to drink as it is very hot there.

Soal Awarded the Nobel prize for physics in 1918, German physicist Max Planck is best
remembered as the originator of the quantum theory. His work helped user in a new era in
theoretical physics and revolutionized the scientific community’s understanding of atomic
and sub-atomic processes.

Planck introduced an idea that led to the quantum theory, which became the foundation of
twentieth century physics. In December 1900, Planck worked out an equation that described
the distribution of radiation accurately over the range of low to high frequencies. He had
developed a theory which depended on a model of matter that seemed very strange at the
time. The model required the emission of electromagnetic radiation in small chunks or
particles. These particles were later called quantums. The energy associated with each
quantum is measured by multiplying the frequency of the radiation, v, by a universal
constant, h. Thus, energy, or E, equals hv. The constant, h, is known as Planck’s constant. It
is now recognized as one of the fundamental constant of the world.

Planck announced his finding in 1900, but it was years before the full consequences of his
revolutionary quantum theory were recognized. Throughout his life, Planck made
significant contributions to optics, thermodynamics and statistical mechanics, physical
chemistry, and other fields. In 1930, He was elected president of the Kaiser Wilhelm
society, which was renamed the Max II. Though deeply opposed to the fascist regime of
Adolf Hitler, Planck remained in Germany throughout the war. He died in Gottingen on
October 4, 1947.

A forgotten issue in urbanism is land use during the night time, with problems such as
noise and dirt, which could be improved with information from Twitter. At least this is what
Enrique and Vanessa Frias Martinez believe, computer science researchers at Telephonic
Research and the University of Maryland (USA) respectively, who have suggested using
delocalized tweets for urban planning and land use.

Enrique Frias Martinez explained that delocalized tweets can be very useful source of
information for planning since it is an activity carried out by a large number of people who
provide information on where they are at a specific time and what they are doing. The
researcher points out that thanks to the increased use of smartphones, social networks like
Twitter and Facebook have made it possible to access and produce information
ubiquitously.

These networks generate tags with the event’s relocation. The new technique
“automatically determines land use in urban areas by grouping together geographical
regions with similar patterns of Twitter activity,” says the researcher. Using aggregate
activity of tweets, the Frias-Martinez siblings have studied land use in Manhattan, Madrid,
and London. In the first two cases they identified four uses; residential, business, daytime
leisure (mainly parks and tourist areas) and nightlife areas. The study has determined that,
in Madrid, nighttime tweet activity is concentrated on weekends and in Manhattan, on
weekdays. On the other hand, London is characterized by its tweeting activity in daytime
leisure areas.

Soal Forget lions, tigers, and bears. When it comes to the art of war, army ants are among the
most frightening creatures non earth. With powerful mouth parts, these fighters can
skillfully cut creatures much larger than themselves into pieces. Acting together in great
numbers, army ant colonies succeed at making tens of thousand of such kills each days.
Their capabilities do have limits, though. Contrary to popular belief, they almost never take
down large animals or people.
One of the best places to observe army ants is Barro Colorado, an island in a lake created by
the Panama Canal. The island is home to as many as 50 colonies of Eciton Burchellii, the
most studied army ant in the world. It is one of 150 types of army ants in the New World.
More than 170 other types live in Asia,Africa and Australia.

The colonies of this army ant are huge, ranging from 300,000 to 700,000 ants. They never
stay in one place long, moving from nest site to nest sit. Lingking legs together, they use
their own bodies to from enormous nests called bivouacs, which they hang beneath a fallen
tree. There they stay for about 20 days as the queen lays as many as 300,000 eggs.
When the ants go hunting, as many as 200,000 of them leave the nest in a group that
broadens into a fan as wide as 14 maters. This swarm raid takes a slightly different course
each day, allowing the hunters to covers fresh ground each time.

Protecting the ants wherever they go are the soldiers, recognizable by their overside jaws. If
their frightening look don’t scare enemies away, soldier also have a powerful bite and attack
is often suicidal. Because their jaws are shaped like fishhook, the soldiers can’t pull them
out again. Amazonian tribes have used soldiers ants to close wounds, breaking off the
bodies and leaving the head in place.

Eciton Burchellii are blind and can’t see what’s ahead of them, but they move together in
such great numbers that they easily kill the non-army ants, insects, and other small creatures
that constitute their prey. When the groups happen upon a break in the path, ants
immediately link legs togethers and from living bridges so that the groups can move
forwards without any delay.
In Japanese the word ant is written by linking two characters: one meaning “insect” the
other meaning “loyalty”. Indeed, individual ants are completely loyal to their fellow ants.
They display many examples of selfless cooperation that, while certainly extreme, can’t fail
to win human admiration.
The author’s purpose of writing the text is to…

A. Inform the readers about how army ants set up their life

B. Demonstrate the strength of army ants protect their colonies

C. Analyze how soldier ants protect their colonies

D. Make the readers aware of the use of army ants

Soal The Galapagos Islands are in the Pacific Ocean, off the western coast of
South America. They are a rocky, lonely spot, but they are also one of the most
unusual places in the world. One reason is that they are the home of some of
the last giant tortoises left on earth.
Weighing hundreds of pounds, these tortoises, or land turtles, wander slowly
around the rocks and sand of the islands. Strangely, each of these islands has
its own particular kinds of tortoises. There are seven different kinds of tortoises
on the eight islands, each kind being slightly different from the other. Hundreds
of years ago, thousands of tortoises wandered around these islands. However,
all that changed when people started landing there. When people first arrived in
1535, their ships had no refrigerators. This meant that fresh food was always a
problem for the sailors on board. The giant tortoises provided an easy solution
to this problem.

Ships would anchor off the islands, and crews would row ashore and seize
as many tortoises as they could. Once the animals were aboard the ship, the
sailors would roll the tortoises onto their backs. The tortoises were completely
helpless once on their backs, so they could only lie there until used for soups
and stews. Almost 100,000 tortoises were carried off in this way. The tortoises
faced other problems, too. Soon after the first ships, settlers arrived, bringing
pigs, goats, donkeys, dogs and cats. All of these animals ruined life for the
tortoises. Donkeys and goats ate all the plants that the tortoises usually fed on,
while the pigs, dogs and cats consumed thousands of baby tortoises each year.
Within a few years, it was hard to find any tortoise eggs-or even any baby
tortoises.
By the early 1900 s, people began to worry that the last of the tortoises would
soon die out. No one, however, seemed to care enough to do anything about
the problem. More and more tortoises disappeared, even though sailors no
longer needed them for food. For another 50 years, this situation continued.
Finally, in the 1950 s, scientists decided that something must be done.

The first part of their plan was to remove as many cats, dogs and other
animals as they could from the islands. Next, they tried to make sure that more
baby tortoises would be born. To do this, they started looking for wild tortoise
eggs. They gathered the eggs and put them in safe containers. When the eggs
hatched, the scientists raised the tortoises in special pens. Both the eggs and
tortoises were numbered so that the scientists knew exactly which kinds of
tortoises they had and which island they came from. Once the tortoises were
old enough and big enough to take care of themselves, the scientists took them
back to their islands and set them loose. This slow, hard work continues today,
and, thanks to it, the number of tortoises is now increasing every year. Perhaps
these wonderful animals will not disappear after all.

Pembahasan Jawaban: C

Pembahasan:

Soal di atas menanyakan tentang asumsi penulis. Jawabannya

berdasarkan teks yang disusun sesuai dengan pemahaman pembaca. Pada
kalimat kedua paragraf ketiga "displaying photos in the classroom of
children's drawings or block buildings can help families understand the
critical role of play in early childhood development" menjelaskan

Kalimat “empowers them to make
responsible choices about technology use and screen time at home,
engages them as teachers encourage co-viewing co-participation, and

sekaligus membantu membangun keterampilan literasi digital.

(1) The Hawaiian Islands are a tropical paradise most of the time. But even there, nature can
sometimes show its more violent side. The islands have been bit by numerous natural
disasters in the recent past. These disasters have caused deaths and great damage.

(2) Through all of Hawaii’s history, volcanoes have played an important part. The islands
were formed by the eruption of volcanoes under the ocean. In the big island of Hawaii, the
volcanoes continue to erupt. During an eruption, hot lava pours out of the top of a volcano
and down the side. The red, hot lava covers everything in its path. The air is filled with
smoke and horrible smelling gas that is sometimes poisonous.

(3) Native Hawaiians believe that volcanoes are a natural part of life. In their traditional
religion, volcanoes are ruled by the goddess, Pele. When Pele is angry, the volcanoes erupt.
Before an eruption she takes a human from. If you meet her and are kind to her, you will not
be hurt by the lava. Today, Hawaiians have forgotten most of the ancient gods, but not Pele.
They continue to honor her and her volcanoes.

(4) Another kind of natural disaster that has hit Hawaii is the tidal wave, or tsunami. Unlike
volcanoes, tsunamis come from far away under the ocean. When an earthquake occurs
underwater, it creates huge waves. If these waves hit land, they destroy everything along the
coast.

(5) These days, all of the Hawaiian Islands have special signals to warn of tsunamis. When
the signal sounds, everyone knows it is time to run. They must try to get as far as from the
seashore as possible.

It can be concluded that tsunamis are caused by ....

A. Volcanic eruptions

B. Strong winds far out at sea

C. Rain storms in the Pacific Ocean

D. everything along the coast

E. underwater earthquakes

Pembahasan Jawaban: E. underwater earthquakes

Pembahasan:

Kata kunci nya adalah tsunami, come from. Dari kalimat ... tsunamis
come from far away under the ocean. When an earthquake occurs
underwater, it creates huge waves. (tsunami berasal dari jauh di bawah
laut.

- Opsi A salah, karena letusan gunung berapi bukan penyebab terjadinya

tsunami.

Soal Everyone likes to group things. Language students group words as verbs, nouns and so on ;
collections of words are clasiffied as phrases, or clauses, or sentence and these again are
reclassified according to their function. In the same way, botansist classify plants as algae,
or fungi, or gymnosperms, etc. Zoologist classify animals as vertebrates and invertebrates.
The vertebrates can be further classified as mammals, reptiles, birds, fish, etc. Classification
enables us to keep hold of more information and, if it is based on the right data, enables us
to understand better the ideas we are studying.

Chemists are no exception. The chemical classification of materials, if it is based on a good

system, should enable us to understand better the many substances which exist in our world.
What is to be the basis of our classification? Perhaps the most obvious one is appearance.
Material could be classified as solid liquid or gas with some mixed type as, for example,
mud being solid/liquid material and steam a liquid/gas material. Appearance could enable us
to subdivide our main classification groups a little further; the solid may be green, or black,
powdery or crystalline; the liquid may be colored oily, thick, or free following; the gas may
be colored. However, we soon realize that many probably quite different material have the
same appearance. Both air and the deadly carbon-monoxide gas, are colorless, odorless
gases, but we would not like to group them as same thin. Many different liquids are
colorless, water-like materials.

The sentence “Chemists are no exception”(paragraph 2 line 1) could possibly be restated

as...

A. chemical materials can also be put into classification.

B. classification of chemical materials is without exception.

C. in material classification, chemicals should not be include

D. when appearance is the basis, chemists are not involved

E. chemists may also classify materials using certain criteria

Soal Anoas are the smallest wild buffalo species and are found only on the
Indonesian islands of Sulawesi and Buton. Their small dagger like horns are used
to do battle over territory, both male and female Anoa have horns. As well as being
unsure about whether or not there are actually 2 separate species of Anoa, there
are also a lot of other things that scientists don’t know about them. It can be found
living in dense forest and are hard to observe due to their elusive nature and so not
much is known about how they live and behave in the wild. In the wild Anoa like to
eat things like grass, ferns, leaves, fallen fruit and water plants.

Anoas have interesting digestive systems because they are ruminants, this
means they have 4 sections to their stomach which help them to digest their food.
Other species that are ruminants include wild and domestic cattle, giraffes, goats
and deer. Scientists are still unsure what types of habitat Anoa prefer but we think
that they like living in dense forest habitats, which might be lower down or in the
mountains. They are sometimes also more common near to water where they may
be seen wallowing in mud and water pools. They may have to find places like
mineral licks or even areas with sea water to get important minerals. In the wild
Anoa are normally found living on their own, though small groups of around five
have been seen and it’s common to see mothers and their young living together.
Males and females may also be found together when they are breeding. We think
that they can breed from about 2-3 years old and normally give birth to one calf at a
time. Young Anoa have a slightly more woolly coat that the adults. There are
estimated to be less than 2,500 fully grown Anoa in the wild which means they are
at a very high risk of becoming extinct in the wild. (actionindonesiagsmp.org)

“there are also a lot of other things that scientists don’t know about them.”

The underlined word refers to ….

A. The species of Anoa

B. The scientist

C. Anoa

D. Island of Sulawesi

E. The habitat of Anoa

Pembahasan Jawaban: A. The Species of Anoa

Soal Human body is made up of contless million of cells. Food is needed to build up new cells
and replace the worn out. Howover, the food we take must be changed into subtances that
can be carried in the blood to the places where they are needed. This process is called
digestion.

The first digestive process takes places in the mouth. The food we eat is broken up into
small pieces by the action of teeth, mixed with salvia containing digestive juices which
moisten the food, so that it can be swallowed easily.

From the mouth, food passes through the esophagus-the food passage into the stomach.
Here the food is mixed with the juices secreted by the cells in the stomach for several hours.
Then the food enters the small intestine. All the time the muscular wall of intestine are
squeezing, mixing, and moving the food on wards.

In few hours, the food changes into acids. The acids are soon absorbed by the villi
(microscopic branch projection from the intestine walls) and passed into bloodstream.

Soal Read the following the text, then choose the correct answer by crossing A, B, C, D OR E!

Text 4

(1) Generally, by people's own accounts, the public idea of women at home is that they are
dull and boring. And the stereotype of a working woman is of hard, ambitious, selfish
creatures. It is not just that you are either gentle and dull or selfish and interesting. It is that
you are either a good mother or you are an interesting woman.

(2) "Young women now seem to get a very clear picture that they have got a choice. If they
are going to do mothering well, they have got to play for it by not being interesting women.
If you are an interesting working woman, you are a bad mother. Lyn Richards put the blame
for such notions and for resulting family tensions on the failure of people to talk enough
about them. The media, too, are guilty. There is a lot of media coverage of successful career
women and still a lot, especially in women's magazines, on the joys of motherhood. There's
not that much about the trouble of either role and precious little about combining the roles.
Yet half the women who are married in our society are working!

(3) Nor is much thought given to the task of loosening the ties entrapping men. Lyn
Richards, a working mother, grateful for the privilege of genuinely choosing and being able
to afford the role, criticizes the systematic exclusion of men from 'child rearing and the
really pretty fabulous aspects of having children. She condemns as ludicrous the idea of 9 to
5 treadmill of work as an absolute duty for men. 'The sheer irony to me is that the women's
movement has told women the way to be liberated is to get into the 9 to 5 tied work force
that men have been fighting against for a century. Really, we should be using changes in
women's values to shake up all the oppression and rigidity that men have been under.

(4) Indeed, there has been a change. The new thing since I married is that it's normal for
both husband and wife to go on working when they marry. Now marriage isn't a particularly
big deal. Very often it just legalizes something which has been going on anyway and it
certainly doesn't change a woman's whole basic of life, her notion of who she is. The real
life change is having the first child and when that happens I think that probably most
couples are still reverting to something like the traditional concept of marriage. But the
longer people put off having a child the more likely it is that they won't because they have
set up a viable life style. They don't need to have kids now to have a good marriage.

(5) Not that motherhood and raising families are wholly going out of fashion but rather that
people are having smaller families. Consequently, the period a woman's life when she is not
required to devote herself to mothering is lengthening. 'Mothering-the mother role-just isn't
a very good identity base today, Lyn Richards say. 'Motherhood is a short-term appointment
now. It doesn't last long!

Lyn argues that in rearing children in a family ...

A. women's role should be more dominant

B. both men and women are equally responsible

C. men's role should be put into account

D. working women share equal work distribution

E. men's role should be excluded

Pembahasan Jawaban: B. both men and women are equally responsible

Pembahasan:

Dari kutipan....criticizes the systematic exclusion of men from child

rearing and ... (paragraf 3 baris 3), Lyn Richards mengkritik sistem yang
menjauhkan laki-laki dari peran membesarkan anak. Jadi kesimpulannya,
membesarkan anak sama-sama menjadi tanggung jawab laki-laki dan
perempuan.

- Opsi A salah, karena sudah jelas disebutkan bahwa baik laki-laki

maupun perempuan bertanggung jawab membesarkan anak, bukan hanya

dikecualikan.

Soal Cramming

How do you study when the test is coming? Do you start preparing for the test weeks or
months before the test or leave things to the last hour? If you start studying weeks or
months before the test, it is great. However, if you study all the material in the last hour or
minute, it is not good for you. This is called cramming.

Cramming is when students stay up all night until morning to study before a test or finish an
assignment. This habit can lead to negative impacts, the first being that disruptions in the
regular sleep cycle can cause temporary intellectual lapses. For most students, less sleep can
make them could not focus on the class. Additionally, cramming can leave us with memory
lapses as well.

Each person has a different sleeping schedule, so some of them often use a stimulant for
cramming. An example stimulant, and the most common, is coffee. While delicious and
beneficial, it causes many problems in the long-term such as caffeine intoxication
syndrome, anxiety, panic, and headaches.

To sum up, cramming is not recommended because it disturbs a person’s sleep cycle which
causes temporary intellectual lapses, and using stimulants for cramming gives them a bad
effect on their health.
