I. OBJECTIVES
B. Content Standards The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of rational functions.
The learner:
C. Learning
Competencies distinguishes rational function, rational equation, and rational inequality.
(M11GM-Ib-2 )
solves rational equations and inequalities (M11GM-Ib-3)
D. Learning Objectives identify rational function, rational equation and rational inequality;
solve rational equations;
know the importance of the application of equation to real life scenarios.

STRATEGY USED
A. Preparatory Phase
Department of Education
REGION X – NORTHERN MINDANAO
1. Drill/ Review The class will be divided into two (2) groups wherein the students will play a short
game consisting of three (3) items about composition of function. The first group
who got to answer first will earn the point. The group that have the highest total
score would be given 5 points while the other group will be receiving 2 points.
Questions:
(1) f(g(x)) =
(2) g(h(x)) =
(3) f(x) + g(x) =
2. Motivation Having the same group, the students will play a game entitled Comparison of
Values. (Integration to Elementary Math)
Game Mechanics:
1. If the values in the left are larger than the values in the right, the group in the left
will stand up and the group in the right will remain seated.
2. If the values in the right are larger than the values in the left, the group in the
right will stand up and the group in the left will remain seated.
3. If both values are equal, then both groups will stand up.
3. Presentation of Wrap up the motivation part by correlating the activity with the idea of equation,
Objectives inequality and function.
Say: What do you think class is the correlation of the activity to our lesson today?
Say: Very good! The activity shows different symbols like greater than, lesser than
and equal. The greater than and lesser than signs shows the inequality symbol.
Meanwhile, the equal sign show the equality symbol. In line with that, our
discussion for today will be all about Rational Function, Equation and Inequality.
At the end of the lesson, you are all expected to…
B. Developmental Process students’ outputs from the motivation part by asking the following
Activities / Lesson questions:
Proper A. What is the difference between rational and irrational expressions?
B. How are we going to distinguish rational function, rational equation and rational
inequality?

Say: A rational expression can be expressed as a ratio of integers take for example
fractions. Meanwhile, irrational expression is a real number that cannot be
expressed as a ratio of integers; for example, √2 is an irrational number.
Say: A rational equation or inequality can be solved for all x values that satisfy the
equation or inequality. Whereas we solve an equation or inequality, we do not
“solve” functions. Rather, a function (and in particular, a rational function)
expresses a relationship between two variables (such as x and y), and can be
represented by a table of values or a graph.
x+1
1. 2x = 10 Answer: rational equation
x−1
4.f x = x+1 Answer: rational function
Say: Now let’s proceed to solving rational equations. Given this rational equation
x+1
such 2x = 10, how are we going to solve for “x”?
Challenge the class to provide as many solutions and non-solutions as they can.

The LCD of all denominators is 10x. Multiply both sides of the equation by 10x and
solve the resulting equation.
C. Culminating
Activities
1. Exercises The students will be divided into five (5) groups. Each group will be given an
activity sheet having two parts. In the first part, the students will color the heart with
yellow if it is a rational function, blue, red and orange if the expressions are rational
equation, rational inequality and none of these respectively.
In the second part, the students will solve for the rational equation by finding the
value of x.
(Integration to Arts)
After answering the activity sheet for 6 minutes, the students will report and explain
their answers in front of their classmates.
2. Application The teacher will explain the importance of equation to real life scenarios.
Activity: The students will find the missing “x” integrating it to the fields of
biology, english and cookery.
