PSYCHOLOGY TEST PERSONALITY TEST

Personality = Hereditary + Environment

Personality = Attitude + Behaviour + Character

(Persona = Outer look of a person or mask all of us wear)

Personality Test is made to help to assessor to find out personality of candidate


hide behind his persona.

Personality Tests

(a) Thematic Apperception Test (TAT).

(b) Word Association Test (WAT).

(c) Situation Reaction Test (SRT).

(d) Self Description (SD).

THEMATIC APPERCEPTION TEST


(Projective type of test of someone’s personality)

1. The first type of test under the series is called the Thematic Apperception Test. It
is the test based on imagination. It is a test of imagination of the candidates.

2. There is no right and wrong answer as in case of intelligence test.

3. The word thematic is from “Theme” which means topic or story or problem or
issue.

4. Apperception on the other hand is from the word “Perception” but while
perception means what one sees or under stands, apperception is observation from
within one self.

5. You interpret a seen depending on your personal mental makeup, you


upbringing, your environments, your thought process. In short your attitude and
behaviour colour your perception, these differ from one person to other and when they
are projected by a person, he or she projects his or her own personality or traits ( xq.k).
THEMATIC APPERCEPTION TEST

INTRODUCTION

In Thematic Apperception Test, psychologists are applying Prof. Murray’s Law of


“Need and Stress”. Means they apply stress on the candidates using the TAT and WAT
techniques and try to find out needful (OLQs) in the candidate.

RULES OF THE TEST

1. Under this test 10 to 12 pictures are shown to the candidates.

2. At the end a blank picture/slide is shown so that the candidate can create a
picture of his or her own and write a story,

3. Blank picture/slide and subsequent story give inkling into the mind of the person
clearly.

TIME FOR TEST

1. A picture is shown for a half minute only.

2. During this time the candidate looks at the picture, observes and absorbs details
of the picture and makeups his or her mind about the kind of story he or she wants to
write on the basis of the picture shown.

3. After half minute the picture is removed. The Psychologist (Psyche) ask the
candidates to start writing, no one is permitted to write before this signal.

4. The time for actual noting is four minutes but after three minutes the psyche may
or may not announce one minute more.

5. After four minutes of writing the next slide/picture is shown and the psyche say’s
“look at the next picture”.

6. Hereafter the process of showing the picture for half minutes followed by four
minutes of writing goes on till all the picture intended to be shown including the blank
one are over.

LENGTH IOF THE STORY

1. ½ of the page, some margin on top and on left side.

2. 9 to 10 lines containing 125-130 words maximum. The story must be finished


within ¾ space provided for story writing.
TECHNIQUES

1. Picture Examination – Examine the picture, look for relevant details


and develop your story based on those details only.

2. Characters – The character shown in the picture must be identified clearly


the candidates must identify them selves with character particularly the centre figure as
per their Sex and Age.

3. Naming the Main Character (Hero or Heroine) – The Central character in


each story is to be named differently. If the picture permits, these names can be from
different religions/regions. How ever: -

(a) There is no need to create a villain in the story.


(b) Side characters need not be named.
(c) Side characters are there to support the main character.
(d) Main character seeks cooperation and gets it from side characters
showing his being a social character.
(e) The hero/heroine is shown progressing in his/her journey towards the
achievement of his/her goal.
(f) Central figure must be positive, so the story should have a positive ending
(don’t make dead to centre character).
(g) Hero must not succumb to pressure.
(h) Since you are going for selection as an officer, your hero should be a
man/person of substance (eknk) and not a riff raff (ordinary man).
(j) Hero should not be projected as a superhuman, he has his own limitations
which he over comes and achieve his goal. He is possible but not “God” or
“Angel”.

STORY WRITING

Writing the story - A story has three parts: -

(a) Introduction – 30% – Hero/Heroine + Need + Problem + Aim.


(b) Main Body – 60% – Progress of events step by step.
(c) Conclusion – 10% – What ultimately happened at last.
(Tense used in end must be past tense).

(a) Introduction (Opening part) (30% portion) - What leads to the situation?

(i) Hero + Need/Problem/Challenge + Aim which he has taken.


(ii) Need / Problem + Hero + Aim.
(b) Main Body (Middle part) (60% portion) - What all had happened?

(i) Various efforts taken by Hero to satisfy the need in a logical sequence.
(ii) This part can also be treated as journey of the hero.
(iii) This part also reflects the press action of the new.
(iv) Every effort step taken by hero will reflect a shade of personality.

(c) Conclusion (End) (10% portion) - What was the conclusion of the story?

(i) The result of the effort.


(ii) Fulfillment of Aim.
(iii) Sense of achievement.
(iv) Sense of satisfaction.
(v) Sense of social service.
(vi) Solution of problem.

PRECAUSIONS

1. Do not show any reward seeking tendencies on the part of hero.

2. No publicity, no cash reward, no promotions, no praise.

3. In personality tests avoid mention of birds, animals; nature etc. is to be made as


they indicate leaving towards loneliness.

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS

1. Do not give any heading to the story.

2. Use only past tense, no present of future tense at all.

3. Only third person is to be used.

4. Avoid over writing, cutting etc. as it shows confusion and in decision.

5. Negative situation is to be turned into positive one.

6. Some times a hazy and unclear picture is shown; this is to encourage candidates
to run their imagination. This is done purposely.

7. Do not describe the seen, but make a story based on the seen.

8. Your hero is to have three qualities (PPP).

PPP: -
P – Positive, P – Practical, P – Pleasant.
BLANK STORY

1. It can be a scientific invention or discovery involving the hero.

2. For Army Personal – Army personal can think about an encounter with militants
or terrorists.

3. Adventures – Para ceiling, Bunjie Jumping etc.

4. Social Service.

5. Ideas must not be repeated in Blank story.

MODEL STORIES (TAT)

1. Virender was a superintendent in the swimming club, during vacations he got


several request from the children from various places to learn swimming. He concerned
with the authorities & decided to organise a summer camp of swimming. He advertised
out the camp. Very Large No of children approach to this camp. He took up the photos
of the children & got the entry form filled. He then fixed the timings & schedule of the
camp. He hired some instructors from the club & gave then the necessary instruction.
He also gathered the students & gave them instruction about the area to be out of
bound. He himself supervised the chlorination & change of water regularly. He also
manages the medical help in case of casualty & other facilities. At the end he found that
the children’s were able to learn swimming & were happy.

2. Sachin was having a construction firm. He decided to develop a new locality in


the remote area. He purchased the land & laid out the planning. He divided the land for
various houses, hospital, school etc. after consulting the corporation. He also made
arrangement for the roads by consulting the authorities. He also used solar light for the
street light. He made the sewerage facilities in advance. He laid down the telephone
cables, planted tree along the roadside & installed some snacks houses. He also
bought transport service from the respective authority & got a particular place for
parking & place for park was selected & made. Within no time he developed the locality
& sorted out & was happy.

3. Saurav was newly appointed as ACP traffic police in a particular area. He found
unmanaged traffic in city. he put upon a notice at various location & invited youth for
volunteering in traffic movement. He got the application form & gave the youth
necessary training. He also provided them with suitable stipend. He allotted the trained
youth along with the regular traffic police personal, supervised them regularly. Thereby
he found that the launching of new scheme solved the traffic problem in area. By this
inspiration other areas also launch the same scheme & people of locality were happy &
satisfied.
4. Rahul was living in the Delhi; he found that the water level underground has been
decreasing rapidly due to more consumption & waste of water. He than suggested the
authority the new concept of water harvesting. For this people should be made aware of
the benefits of this concept and how to do it? He also made people aware not to waste
water. He then hired some labour & with Funds from the authorities went along with the
job in proper manner. He got the roof of his & all the neighbor houses water proof &
Alongwith pipe to the drain water gathered on roof was collected in deep well and
through these well water goes in the earth & thus water level inc. After some time there
was no problem of water in summer in the area. He also suggested the authorities that
any new house must have the technology.

5. Ranjan was a college student who was a very food swimmer. He wanted to share
his talent with his friends and help them to learn swimming as many of his friends were
not able to swim. He called up his friends those who were interested and told them
about the time and place. During the training he gave them proper security measures
they should take. His friends were very keen and were working very hard to learn. Later
he found that more and more people were approaching him to learn swimming. Many of
his friends who learned swimming from him went on to swim at national level. This gave
lot of satisfaction to Ranjan.

6. Abrar was a civil engineer who after a long time went to his village. He found that
in his village there were no roads and during the rainy season the villager faced lot of
problem. He took the job of constructing the road which connected the village to
national highway. He gave an application to the MCD of the district and got the plain
passed. Work for the road stated and was completed on time. After the road was
prepared the villagers’ time to reach the highway was reduced to half and they were
very happy this satisfied Abrar a lot and was happy with the work he had done.

7. Ashish was college student who was going to organise the parents day function
at his college. He was given the responsibility of co-ordinating all the stage
performance. He took the challenge and made proper plan and told the participants to
come up with original and cheerful performance. He selected the different performers
after careful scrutiny and made proper schedule. Proper guidance was given to the
performers by professionals. On the day at the function stage shows went along
according to plan and the program was a very big success. After the program Ashish
was relived and happy.

8. Sandeep was going through commando training. He was selected to go through


this commando training so that he could serve the country and when needed lay his life
for the country. During the training he performed will full dedication and with lot of effort
and worked very hard to make himself strong and enduring. After the training was
completed he was posted in the North East. One day during an attack at am temple by
the terrorists, he and his fellow commandos were called for there duties. He went along
with his duty and was able to kill the terrorists and was happy for the cause he has
performed.
9. Amit was a college student who was going to participate in the annual fare where
he had to show the model of an air craft which will fly. He was getting ready for the
event with full dedication as he wanted to win the event. He prepared an aircraft with
help from some books on the topic. Got the required place for resting the model he had
prepared. He went for exhausting testing and was satisfied with what he had prepared.
On the day of the competition he had many tough competitions but he never felt logging
behind and performed very well and won the client. He was very happy on winning the
event.

10. Rahim was a district development officer who came to a village in his area. He
came to the site with the view as he thought the place will be very good for a picnic spot
this would help the development of the village and the place will be explored by different
people for its natural beauty. So he got the permission of the panchayat of the village
and worked started for development of the area like roads, drinking water, toilets and
soon the place was removed and people started visiting places. This gave the villager
employment and they were very happy and Rahim was happy for the cause of villages.

11. Praveen was a college student who during his vacations visited his village. After
meeting with his friends he found that the locality was face shortage of water. So he
prepared a model of water harvesting technique and showed it to his friends. His friends
liked the idea very much and they decided to implement the idea for the locality. He got
the permission of the president of the society and they started working of the locality.
The project got completed before monsoon and during the monsoon it started working
and it was found that the water level has increased and it was showing good result.

12. Martin was medical graduate who was working for the AIDS organisation and
was in the term of spreading AIDS awareness. He was the leader of the team which had
to go to different villages and run the awareness program. He used to visit the villages
with his team members would show the villager a small film he has prepared. Take a
class of them and after the class was distributed condoms to the married men and
encouraged them to use it. The program was running successfully and the number of
cases of AIDS in his area was remaining stable which was very satisfying for martin.

13. Mandeep was a post graduate student who saw that there are many children in
his colony who are not able to attend school because of financial problem and was not
educated so he took an aim to educate these children. He went to the parents of the
children convinced them to send there children to the evening school which he had
opened for such children. May children started coming both boys and girls and they
were studying with full dedication. Many of Mandeep’s friends also joined the program
and it started bearing good school results. Children were performing very well. This was
very satisfying for Mandeep.
14. Sumit was a student who saw the traffic of his area not organised and affecting
lot of people. He told his friends about this and they all agreed and they decided to do
proper survey and analysis and make a report on the condition and submit it to the
traffic police. So he starts working along with his friends. Teams were prepared to do
different job like the survey and analysis. He took all the suggestions and with
discussion prepared a report and submitted it to the traffic police. The ideas were
reviewed with positive attitude and changes were made and the traffic problem was
settled.

MODEL STORIES (TAT) WITH IDEA OF PICTURE

1. Rahul after completing his degree in Public Relations was working in a company
manufacturing electronic items. He was given the responsibility to advertise the
company and its products. He set down with his team and design many creative and
catchy advertisements. He selected a logo and roped in a prominent sports personality.
He checked out the readership of prominent New Papers and magazines targeting the
prospective clients. Thereafter he decided to take-up a series of ads with the
newspapers as they were cost effective. He ensured a prominent placement of his ads
in the News Paper and requested the News Papers staff to repeat the ad at the same
place always. He also develops a Web Site and promptly answers all quarries online.
Slowly the company moved to the centre stage of business.
2. Anil was in the management committee at the Ujjain Kumbh Mela. This year
many people were about to visiting the mela for the holy dip in Shipra River. He decided
to organise the dip at a grand scale. He works out the estimate of people visiting the
site. He arranges separate places for the ladies and gents. He marked the sites with
boards and continuously announces the procedure on the Loud Speaker. He created a
task force of local civilians and police officials and organised the crowd with the help of
brackets. He arranged for life guards. Restaurants for the visitors and Ashrams for the
out station people. He maintained proper health and hygiene condition at the site. He
was happy that the people could perform their religious rites and enjoy the holy dip.

3. Rajesh was an administrator with NIIT a leading Computer Coaching Centre.


Many students use to come on Scooter and Car from different places of the city to
attend classes at his centre. The monsoon was on and it was creating difficulty for the
children to reach on time. Hence he decided to take a class on safe driving during
Monsoon. He taught the children the following basic points: -

(a) Ensure vehicle is in good running condition.


(b) Always start early from home to avoid over speeding.
(c) Always follow the traffic i.e. lane driving.
(d) Always follow the instruction of traffic police.
(e) Hear the weather bulletin in the morning every day.

He also put-up these points on the institute notice board and he realised that the
children benefited from his efforts and class started on time.
4. Dinesh work in the fire fighting department at Delhi. Many high rise buildings
were coming up in his area. After a visit he found that proper fire fighting arrangement
were not made in these building and there where lapses from the part of the builders
which could lead to trouble. Hence with the assistance of his colleagues they swung into
action and made stringent rules as follows: -

(a) Each building must have an under ground water tank.


(b) Their must be fire exit routes for each floor.
(c) Adequate fire extinguishers must be placed at all the floors.
(d) The building must be clear of inflammable materials.
(e) A dedicated route for the fire brigade vehicles must be in place.

He ensured that before the building was open to public all the above steps and
necessary precautions were taken place.

5. Kamal was stationed in Gurgaon near New Delhi. He own a travel company
which ferried workers from various destinations to their offices or multinational
companies (MNCs) since these MNCs work round the clock it was his responsibility to
ensure smooth movement from office to home. Winter has just set in and the fog was
very heavy. He assembled all his drivers and passed them the following instructions: -

(a) Drive Slowly.


(b) Keep headlights switch on.
(c) Install fog light to improve visibility.
(d) Follow the vehicle in front.
(e) Keep the car wipers in good condition.
(f) Avoid applying sudden brakes.
He also got each and every vehicle serviced. Thus his company was able to
conduct operations effectively during the winter months.

6. Johan was a General Manger in a Tea Company. Once he went to Darjeeling in


summer vacations with his friends. While enjoying he found that a Tea Garden was for
sale. His company purchased the Tea Garden and decided to install a new unit near by
that garden. He took the task to establish the unit and got the infrastructure constructed
for the company. He plated new tea shrubs in the garden and used latest machinery
and technologies for proper processing. He gave proper emphasis for marketing and
advertising of his company. Attractive packing labels were used with catchy slogans. He
also provided thirty days credit scheme to the distributors. He also started labour
incentive plans for the workers and their families. He also kept the population standards
under control. In a short time his company achieved a good name in the market.

7. Kuldeep was newly elected the president of Resident Welfare Association. He


organise a get-together party at his residence. During the party he discussed with the
residents about the children’s park of the colony which was not properly maintained. He
discussed the matter with the DDA officials and took the charge to maintain the park. He
made a plan and divided the park in four pars. In one part he constructed a skating
ground, in the second part he installed swings, slides, cages for small children’s up to
the age group of 10 years, in the third part the ground was created to play different
games, in the forth part he planted flowers, trees and grasses. He also constructed a
walking strip for morning walk and jogging. He put some lights in the park and appointed
a “Mali” for its maintenance. To generate the funds for maintaining the park they gave
the lawns for marriages and parties.
8. Rakesh was an NCC under officer in Hyderabad. A major supporting event was
scheduled to be organised in the city by the Sports Authority of Indian (SAI). The SAI
was looking for students volunteers to organise the event. Rakesh voluntarily got his
name registered. Before two months of starting of events all the volunteers were
provided as special training to assist the authorities. Rakesh was selected as the leader
of this group. He divided the group in various parts stop the first team was given the
task for cleaning and maintaining the stadiums the second team was given the tasks for
promoting and selling of tickets. The third team was for assisting the traffic police in
maintaining the smooth flow of traffic in the city during the event. The fourth team
assisted to authorities in parking the vehicles outside the stadium. The fifth team helps
the visitors to see different tourist places of the city. These student volunteers also
organised a cultural program in the opening and closing ceremonies of the games which
was very much like by the audience.

9. Dhruv was working as an Area Manager with state Bank of India. Due to arrival
of Private Banks in the market, a tough competition was prevailing. To meet the
demand of the market he proposed to launch a range of new schemes in the bank. He
introduced a new account called “Super Saving Account” and provided free Credit
Cards with personal accident insurance. He gave the facility of free Demand Draft and
the Bankers Cheque upto Rs 5000/- denomination free of cost. He established ATM
Centre at various prominent places. He also provided the facility of withdrawal from
other banks ATM. He also started a Customer Care Department and 24 hour helpline.
Due to wide range of facilities provided by the bank, the number of Customers
increased very shortly. The plan implemented by Dhruv was a greet success.
