SECOND SEMESTER 2018-19
POWER ELECTRONICS (EEE/INSTR F342)
Comprehensive Exam (Regular, Closed Book)
Date: 06.05.2019
Time-: 09:00 A.M - 12:00 P.M Max Marks: 60
 Assume any suitable data if necessary
 Answer all questions
1. (i) A boost converter in continuous current conduction is used to boost the input voltage
of 5V to 15V under ideal conditions. The average load current is 0.5A. At a switching
frequency is 25kHz, determine (a) the duty cycle from the transfer function of the
converter (b) peak to peak ripple current of the filter inductor of L = 150µH (c) peak to
peak output ripple voltage of the filter capacitor of C= 220µF (d) determine the critical
load resistance for the current to be continuous. (ii) If the filter inductor has an internal
resistance of r = 5Ω, find the maximum possible output voltage and the corresponding
duty cycle. Also plot the variation of transfer function vs duty cycle for both ideal and
non-ideal case of the boost converter and compare. (iii) In the ideal case of boost
converter, if the current becomes discontinuous derive step by step the equation for the
output voltage. [25 marks]
2. For the block diagram given in Fig.1 (i) write down the most suitable power electronic
converters and the corresponding best suitable power electronic devices for the four boxes
(1, 2, 3 and 4) given. (ii) Draw the corresponding general circuit diagram for each
converter. (iii) For the third power electronic converter, (a) determine the conduction
angle of the power electronic switch such that the peak phase voltage is 300Vfor a
balanced star-connected R load of R = 50Ω (b) Draw the corresponding phase and line
output voltages with suitable circuits, calculations and gate pulse waveforms, (c)
determine the average and RMS current through the power electronic devices [25 marks]

3. A single phase bi-directional AC voltage controller has 120V RMS and 60Hz source
supplying an RL load with R = 20Ω and L=50 mH. The delay angle α = 900. Draw the
circuit diagram and all corresponding waveforms and determine (a) an expression for load
current, (b) for a conduction angle of 1300and 147W of heat power dissipation find (i) the
RMS load voltage (ii) the RMS SCR current (iii) average SCR current (iv) RMS source
current, and (v) the power factor
