Who we are

We're at the centre of the world class bi-national food regulation system that
protects the ‘safe food’ brand for Australia and New Zealand.
What we do

Our vital work means people in Australia and New Zealand can be confident the
food they buy is safe to eat.

ensure a safe food supply.

Food recalls
Food recalls remove unsafe food from sale to protect consumers.
Food can be recalled for a range of reasons, including product
contamination, undeclared allergens and labelling errors. When a
recall happens, FSANZ works with food businesses and regulators to
coordinate the response and inform consumers.
Business guidance
Like food businesses, FSANZ is invested in safe food. The standards
we develop support food businesses to produce, sell, serve and
import safe food, access new markets and meet consumer needs. Our
information, resources and tools can help food businesses
understand food standards and regulation.

new food safety standards.

Novel foods
Novel foods are non-traditional foods that require assessment by FSANZ to
establish their safety before they enter the food supply.

Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE)

Consumers are protected from BSE-contaminated food. Only beef and beef
products derived from animals free from BSE can be sold in Australia.

Food safety standards

Australia's food safety standards seek to lower the incidence of foodborne illness.

Consumer information
Our mission is to ensure consumers can trust the foods they choose
to eat. Public confidence in the food supply is a cornerstone of a
healthy population and a strong economy. Find out more about what
FSANZ does to keep our food supply safe and help consumers make
informed choices.
