FMGC - Standard and Part Number Identification

The document provides an explanation of the different flight management and guidance computer (FMGC) standards and part numbers used on Airbus A320 family aircraft. It describes how FMGCs can be identified by their part number and standard, explaining the significance of prefixes and suffixes. Examples are given of typical part numbers and what components they indicate.

Background
Due to the growing number of FMGC standards and part numbers certified on A320 family,
this article provides a summary of the existing FMGC standards and part numbers used on
A320 family aircraft.

Description

Could you please provide us with some explanation concerning the different FMGC standard
and PN identification?
Solution

First, a FMGC is composed of 2 parts:

-Flight Management System (FMS)

-Flight Guidance (FG)

The box itself is always under Thales responsibility.

However:

-the FG part is always manufactured by Thales

-the FMS part is either manufactured by Honeywell or Thales/GE (formerly Smiths)

How a FMGC can be identified

A FMGC is identified by a Part Number (PN) and its standard.

1- PN identification

=> If the PN starts with the letter "B":

This is a FMGC with a FMS first generation (FMS1). This standard is also called "Legacy".

In this case the FMS part is manufactured by Honeywell.

=> If the PN starts with the letter "C":

This is a FMGC with a FMS second generation (FMS2):

-If the PN is C13042XXXX or C13207XXXX, then the FMS part is manufactured by

Honeywell. This standard is also called "Pegasus" (C13042X) or "Pegasus II" (C13207X).

-If the PN is C13043XXXX or C13208XXXX, then the FMS part is manufactured by

Thales/GE (formerly Smiths).

Note:

C1304x as the root PN indicates the second generation FMGC.

C1320x as the root PN indicates the third generation FMGC with FMS2 (R1A), called FMGC
3G. This is part of the “Power 8” program aiming at reducing the cost, weight, obsolescence
exposure, and maintenance cost of LRU servicing. This new FMGC family has the
particularity to have no OBRM anymore (all software are data-loadable). To identify the FG
loadable software, dedicated PN have been defined: the LRU IDENT P/N (mentioned in IPC
interchangeability conditions), which are shown in MCDU LRU IDENT page of the AFS
menu.

2- Standard identification

To easily identify different standards, a letter coding has been chosen depending on FMS
provider (FM kit) and on aircraft motorization (FG part):
-"F" means that the FMS standard is manufactured by Honeywell (Legacy)

-"P" or "H" means that the FMS standard is manufactured by Honeywell (Pegasus)

-"S" means that the FMS standard is manufactured by Thales/GE (formerly Smiths)

-"I" or "PI" means the FG part standard for aircraft fitted with IAE or PW engines

-"C" or "PC" means the FG part standard for aircraft fitted with CFM engines

3- Example

FMGC PN C13042AA03 (P1C11) contains:

-a FMS part second generation (FMS2) manufactured by Honeywell "P1" (Pegasus)

-a FG part manufactured by Thales "C11" and corresponding to CFM engines fitted on

aircraft

FMGC PN C13208BA00 (S7API12) is a FMGC 3G that contains:

-LRU IDENT PN C13208BA02 with FG SW PN G2859AAA02 and FM OPS PN

G2604AAH02

-a FMS2 (R1A) manufactured by Thales/GE "S7A"

-a FG part manufactured by Thales "PI12" and corresponding to IAE engines fitted on aircraft
