Standards
Depth Standard

Objective
Slickline Well Intervention Operations are always performed with a reference to depth. Maintaining and
reporting accurate depth measurements is an integral and important part of the field operation. Slickline
operations depth reporting must be performed as an accurate, systematic, repeatable process which is both
auditable and traceable.

Scope
All Slickline operations

Responsibilities
Management
Management are responsible for the implementation of the Depth Standard, ensuring all employees comply
with its provisions whilst ensuring the Depth Standard remains effective and current.
Management will: -
Provide depth training for new employees, maintain training materials and ensure depth
competency requirements are maintained for all Field Operations
Review the job programs and procedures as part of the pre-job briefing and evaluate the data
acquired in the course of Slickline operations and the sequence of events in the post job de-
briefings
Audit Slickline wellsite operations

Field & Base Personnel

All Slickline personnel participating in wellsite operations shall implement the requirements of
the Depth Standard.
Slickline Supervisors will be responsible for all the depth related aspects of the wellsite operation,
ensuring all depths associated with the operation are reported accurately
Slickline Supervisors are responsible for the recording of wellsite Smart Data (electronic depth
and tension data files) and including the data acquired in the final job report
Slickline personnel shall be responsible for the wellsite maintenance procedures related to
maintaining accurate depth measurements and for reporting equipment depth related failures or
other issues to management in the course of or on the conclusion of the wellsite operation
Base personnel are responsible for the preventative and corrective maintenance required to keep
depth measurement equipment and accessories operational and capable of measuring depth
accurately

Slickline Technical Support Manager

To provide technical support related to Depth Measurements and related equipment

Depth Critical
All Slickline well operations are depth critical, all depth related run information must be reported

Zero Reference Point

A well’s depth reference point is the Rotary Kelly Bushing (RKB).
Slickline rig operations will use the Rotary Kelly Bushing as the zero reference point.
Slickline rigless operations, both onshore and offshore, the zero reference point shall be provided by the
client and shall be known prior to starting operations

Completion Diagram
Well information, including depth data is available on the on the well completion diagram. The Slickline Crew
must be provided with the latest version of the completion diagram prior to starting well operations. No
Slickline operation shall be conducted without a current well completion diagram available at the well site. A
copy of the completion diagram should be posted adjacent to the Slickline winch operating position

Slickline Measured Depth

All Slickline runs shall be reported with a reference to the depth run in the well.

When Slickline Measured Depths do not match the completion diagram depths the error(s) shall be noted and
reported. If the error remains consistent no further action will be taken. If the depth error increases or varies
with each run in the well it may be an indication of a fault in the unit depth measurement system, which must
be investigated and corrected before resuming operations.

Zero Point Discrepancies

On pulling out of the well the zero point discrepancy shall be noted. The depth system will show a difference
between the zero point setting before running into a well and the zero point after pulling out of the well. The
difference cannot be controlled or adjusted but only monitored. The Slickline Supervisor shall note the
difference each run and if it is observed that the zero point error is changing it must be investigated and
corrected before resuming operations.

Slickline Wire Stretch

Wire stretch is not usually taken into account in Slickline operations, for example, a 0.125” wire at 10,000ft
has a total stretch of 43” or 0.035%

Slickline Depth Systems

Slickline units can be equipped with either a mechanical depth indictor, for instance a Veeder-Root counter or
depth information is displayed on a winchman’s panel via an electronic counter, in some cases both systems
may be in use simultaneously.

In both cases the depth outputs are generated by a counter wheel on the unit measurehead, in the case of
the mechanical system the counter wheel drives a flexible drive to the counter and in the case of the
electronic system it drives an encoder.

In either case the accuracy of the depth measurement depends on the counter wheel, where diameter
changes due to wear or damage will have an impact. The counter wheel must be checked regularly for wear
or damaged and as part of the annual maintenance event the groove diameter must be measured, any
reduction in diameter and the wheel must be replaced

Electronic Winchman’s Panel

When a Slickline unit is equipped with an electronic winchman’s panel, it must be functional, operational and
recording data throughout the in-well operation.

Recording and Reporting Depth

For operations where there is no electronic winchman’s panel all depths and depth related observations shall
be recorded in Supervisor’s Tally Book. All depth information shall be reported to the client on the well service
report as recorded at the well site.

The winchman’s panel displays depth, speed and tension throughout the Slickline well operation. All data files
relating to a specific operation will be downloaded at the end of the operation and presented to the Client as
part of the end of job report. If in the event of an in-hole issue the electronic winchman’s panel data files shall
provide information for evaluation and investigation.

Maintenance and Calibration

All equipment associated with depth measurement shall be maintained and all maintenance events reported

Pre-Job Depth Validation Checks

The accuracy of the depth system shall be periodically (every 3 months) checked during pre-job preparations
in the base, with the results recorded and reported as part of the pre-job maintenance procedure.

Mechanical Depth Accuracy Validation

The depth system reading accuracy shall be checked against known well depths using either a tubing end
locator or a gauge cutter or tubing drift run to a known restriction in the wellbore such as a landing nipple or
tubing crossover.

Loss of Depth System

In the event there is a depth system failure whilst running in or pulling out of the well, stop the unit,
investigate and attempt to repair any obvious cause of the problem. Inform the Client’s Representative and
contact the base supervisor, do not attempt to proceed with the run without approval.

Z-Chart
Where smooth spooling is used, (≥0.125” wires) the use of a ZChart as a backup depth system should be
implemented
