According to the latest report “Artificial Intelligence and the Future of
Teaching and Learning” published by the United States Department of Educational
Technology (2023), the rising interest and use of AI in educational settings suggests that while AI offers many benefits, an emphasis on the human should be applied when using AI in educational settings. Further, the report states that “exercising judgment and control in the use of AI systems and tools is an essential part of providing the best opportunity to learn for all students”. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning as well as computer supported systems have been around for decades but with the launch of recent applications such as ChatGPT, Bard, Mid Journey, Dalle-2 built on and powered with large language models and generative intelligence, the interest in the relationship between human and machine-based creativity has sparked new research. AI has helped companies automate standardized processes in areas such as customer service centers, writing basic programming code in IT projects, identifying problems and helping diagnostics develop better tools in medical applications, and writing job descriptions for open positions in general business settings (Anantrasirichai & Bull, 2022). According to Vinchon et al. (2023), “we are in a new era of ‘assisted creativity’, namely AI is not an independent creator in this sense, but rather a collaborative creative agent”, and continue by saying that “AI systems can be differentiated from other computerized systems because AIs have fluid adaptation capabilities, sometimes going beyond what was initially programmed” (p. 4). The use of AI-based systems does not come without challenges and ethical concerns. Ray (2023) identified several key challenges, biases and ethical limitations associated with ChatGPT and points out ChatGPT's ability to generate fake news and misleading information. As AI powered tools become more popular, many companies, schools and universities have established guidelines related to reliability, truth and fact finding and the responsible use of such systems.
