NO.
THIS IS NOT A
MEGA PROMPT.
This is a straight up Prompt Engineering
guide on how Leonardo DaVinci would’ve
likely used ChatGPT.

There will be one of my own personal

frameworks at the end that is inspired by
Leonardo Da Vinci.

That i use myself and that’s currently being

used by the companies I work with.

Swipe
I’m half tempted to turn this into a book with
more information, but, I want to give the
baseline to you and put you ahead of the
curve.

Swipe
LET‘S START
WITH A QUICK
GUIDE ON WHAT
PROMPT
ENGINEERING IS

Swipe
WHAT IS
PROMPT
ENGINEERING?
Well that’s a great question.

An Engineer is a being who builds things or

structures.

You structure prompts so that it gives a

particular output - which matters more and
more on a high level.

Swipe
BUT ISN’T
PROMPT
ENGINEERING
JUST SENTENCE
WRITING?
Well, yeah. In the same way that sculpting is
hitting something with a hammer.

Anyone can prompt.

But for highly specific applications, those

commands matter greatly.

Swipe
And incase you’re wondering?

That’s where the money is being spent by

when companies hire Prompt Engineers.

Anthropic hired (and still hire) a Prompt

Engineer for $250,000 upwards.

Swipe
BUT SURELY THE
BEST PROMPT
ENGINEERS
WOULD BE THE
DEVELOPERS?
Wrong.

This is like saying the Car Engineers of

Lamborghini are also the best drivers or
racers in the world. They’re not.

Swipe
DO YOU HAVE
EXAMPLES OF
THE DIFFERENT
STYLES OF
PROMPTS?
Yes. Yes I do.

Swipe
STANDARD
“Generate a piece of copy for me that’s 500
words long. It should sound friendly. My
product is (insert here).”

Swipe
ADVANCED
“Generate Social Media copy, specificially for
Facebook that’s 300 words long. It should
sound friendly. My product is (insert here) and
my comapny name is (insert company name
here).”

Swipe
SUPER
“Generate Social Media Copy that is
specifically for Facebook. My brand name is
(insert brand name here), the product is (insert
product here) and the benefits are (insert
benefits here). The tone of the post should be
exciting, yet mysterious. Vary the sentence
length so it reads naturally. Make sure it’s
punchy and keeps people hooked. My target
demographic is (insert demographic here).

Swipe
WAIT, SO WHAT’S
WRONG WITH
THIS?
Well, a majority of prompts are written in a
paragraph format where you fill in blanks.

Once you get to higher levels you get:

Fine Tuning
Priority Levels
Command Formatting

And a majority of prompts need more context.

Swipe
This means an actual decent output takes
around 3 to 5 attempts or shots.

1. First Generation.
a. Prompt Template + User Context
i. This generates a foundation for
ChatGPT to work on
2. Second Generation
a. This contains user updates, requests,
and more context.
3. Third Generation
a. More of the above if the Second
Generation isn’t satisfactory.

All kept in the same chat window.

Swipe
That’s not say a singular prompt can’t get the
job done.

Though it’s not a secret that constantly

reiterating with ChatGPT outputs gets
phenomenal results.

Though most people give up after just the

first prompt.

Swipe
SO WHAT DOES
IT LOOK LIKE AT
A HIGH LEVEL?
Well...

Swipe
And that’s on a more readable note.

This isn’t factoring in the API and other things.

As well as knowledge banks, weights,

reference points, output format etc.

Swipe
Now, let’s getting into Prompting like
Leonardo Da Vinci.

Swipe
WHERE DO YOU
START?
Mindset is the big one.

You have to think less technically and more

artistically when it comes to prompting.

You are not writing lines of code. You are

writing commands and actions.

Swipe
Truthfully, writing prompts is closer to writing
campaigns and descriptions for
Dungeons and Dragons.

Swipe
The solutions to most prompting problems
have a creative or perceptive solution rather
than a technical one.

Swipe
Here are a few Disciplines we know that
Leonardo Da Vinci valued that can apply to
your own mindset.

Swipe
Curiosità (Curiosity). Da Vinci's insatiable
curiosity was the bedrock of his thinking.

He constantly questioned the why and how of

everything, leading to deep exploration.

It’s that same curiosity that drives growth.

Swipe
Dimostrazione (Demonstration). Leonardo
emphasized the importance of learning
through experience, experimentation, and
demonstration.

Testing knowledge through experience,

persistence, and the correction of errors.

Think reiterative processes, etc.

Swipe
Sensazione (Sensation). The refinement of the
senses, especially sight, was crucial for
Leonardo.

Our senses are our windows to the world, and

by sharpening them, we can enhance our
ability to experience and understand our
surroundings.

And at times, our problems.

Swipe
Sfumato (Going up in Smoke). Sfumato is my
favourite one. This is the acceptance of
ambiguity, paradox, and uncertainty.

He understood that not everything in the

world is black and white.

Embracing the unknown is essential for

creativity.

Swipe
Arte/Scienza (Art and Science). Leonardo saw
no division between art and science. He
believed that these disciplines complement
each other.

That the study of both is essential for a

complete understanding.

Swipe
Connessione (Connection). Leonardo
perceived a connectedness in all things.

Or an interrelationship between all natural

things.

Sure, it’s a holistic view. But it is a precursor to

systematic thinking. Once you see
connections, you can’t unsee them.

Swipe
Proportione (Proportion). The study of
proportions, not just within the human body
but in all of nature.

Proportions can also involve Priority.

There are universal laws governing the

harmony and balance of all things, and
sometimes that balance isn’t 50/50.

Swipe
Sfida (Challenge). Leonardo thrived on
challenging prevailing wisdom, norms, and
conventions.

You cannot be afraid to test things out.

Even if they are not conventional.

Swipe
Persistenza (Persistence). Da Vinci's countless
unfinished works and relentless pursuit of
knowledge only further shows how much he
appreciated persistence.

Driven by the journey of discovery. Deeply

understanding that mastery requires patience.
Dedication. Continuous effort.

Swipe
Having a mindset like this is MASSIVELY
beneficial in Prompt Engineering.

But also, keep in mind...

Swipe
Interdisciplinary Learning

Leonardo didn’t see a difference between Art

and Science.

It’s easily one of his most enduring legacies.

Even more so when you look at his body of
work.

You can combine all sorts of different fields

and disciplines for very unique results.

Swipe
Systematic Doubt and Questioning

Be skeptical. In a health way of course.

You have to be willing to question what you’re

working on, what you’re seeing, and what
you’re believing.

Average thinking will get you average results.

Swipe
Nature as Inspiration

Nature, to Leonardo, was the ultimate teacher and

source of inspiration.

The same applies for Prompting.

People are people. Part of nature. We all think and

act in certain ways. How many times have we read
stories of ChatGPT getting lazy during the holiday
months?

Or ChatGPT performing better when you “tip it”?

All very human actions.

Swipe
BUT WHAT
WOULD
LEONARDO DO
WITH CHATGPT?
No one can say for certain of course, but...

Probably form a Codex.

Containing all the information, interactions,

and probably Prompts that make ChatGPT do
specific things.

Swipe
Creative Synthesis would also be likely.

Creating new information from different

disciplines and unlikely alliances.

For instance, using the patterns of turbulence

in fluids and the social dynamics of
populations.

Swipe
A collaborative space made by ChatGPT or at
least other API/LLM would’ve also, likely,
existed under his banner.

Very similar to 3rd Party GPT stores that have

commentary, ratings, exchanging ideas.

A learning space for everyone.

Swipe
We could keep talking about this more and
more.

We haven’t even touched on what a

2nd Renaissance would look like.

But that’s for another time (or book).

Swipe
SO WHATS THE
FRAMEWORK?
I shall give you my main one.

Swipe
SCULPT
S - Specify Role
C - Clarify Objective
U - Unpack Details
L - List Examples
P - Prompt For Exploration
T - Test with Sense Check

Swipe
S - Specify Role (S): Clearly define the role you
want ChatGPT to assume. This could range
from a specific historical figure like Leonardo
da Vinci himself, to a professional role such as
an engineer, artist, or philosopher.

Swipe
C - Clarify Objective (C): Articulate the primary
goal of your prompt. Whether it's generating
ideas, solving a problem, providing
information, or creating something new.

Swipe
U - Unpack Details (U): Provide detailed
background information or context relevant to
the prompt. Think problem-solving. Creativity
is deeply rooted in the details; understanding
the tiny details of a challenge leads to more
informed and better solutions.

Swipe
L - List Examples (L): Include examples or
references to guide the expected response.
Examples can help steer ChatGPT toward the
kind of insightful or creative outputs that
you’re looking for.

Swipe
P - Prompt for Exploration (P): Encourage
ChatGPT to explore beyond the initial
parameters of the prompt.

This may seem silly but this is a direct homage

to Leonardo’s curiosity and his tendency to
draw connections between seemingly
unrelated phenomena. T

his step expands the scope to include wider

implications, interdisciplinary connections, or
novel interpretations.

Swipe
T - Test with Sense Check (T): After receiving
a response, critically evaluate its coherence,
relevance, and creativity.

If the outcome doesn’t meet the expected

standard, refine your prompt by revisiting the
earlier steps in the SCULPT framework and
adjust as necessary.

Usually by following up with even more

prompting.

Swipe
SO WHAT DOES
THAT LOOK LIKE
IN PRACTICE?

Swipe
Step 1 - S C U L P
As an inventor that has a background in art and
mechanical engineering. Design a modern tool
that enhances the creative process for artists,
utilizing both traditional techniques and
cutting-edge technology. Consider the
challenges artists face today, such as the need
for sustainability, the integration of digital and
physical mediums, and the physical strain of
long hours in the studio. Take inspiration from
Viola Organista, which combined art, music,
and engineering. Explore how this tool could
also serve educational purposes, creating a
deeper understanding of the sciences through
artistic expression.

Swipe
Step 2 - T
The final step is now Testing with Sense
Check.

Evaluate the proposal for feasability. Creativity.

Potential to fulfil what’s needed. What specifics
do you need?

You can then follow up the prompt with more

Steps or Shots.

Remember what I said before about following

up and getting FAR better results?

Same applies here.

Swipe
And if you were to apply that framework
specifically to a challenge, like, let’s say...

A Pasta Restaurant?

It would look a little something like this...

Swipe
“Craft captivating Facebook copy for Ezio's Tavernetta,
a cherished pasta restaurant that embodies the
essence of Italian dining. Highlight the restaurant's
dedication to traditional pasta-making, the use of fresh,
local ingredients, and the intimate, family-oriented
dining experience. Make sure the copy is only 250
words long and sounds friendly, while varying
sentence length. Focus on signature dishes that tell the
story of Ezio's culinary heritage, specifically,
Bolognese. The copy should invite readers to not just
enjoy a meal, but to get themselves involved in an
authentic Italian cooking. Emphasize the atmosphere,
the passion behind the food, and the unique
experience of dining at Ezio's. Your goal is to make the
reader feel the warmth of Italian hospitality and the
irresistible allure of homemade pasta, enticing them to
make their next reservation."

Swipe
Outcome
Follow up T prompt

Swipe
Outcome

Swipe
Then edit the outcome, and use it.

No ChatGPT Prompt or Generation is going to

leave you 100% happy all the time.

At least with the current software.

But this will get you very very close.
