The Life and Works of Sir Isaac Newton

Sir Isaac Newton was an English physicist and

mathematician, born on December 25, 1642 (according to
the New Style calendar, which corresponds to January 4,
1643 in the Old Style) in Woolsthorpe, Lincolnshire,
England. He passed away on March 20 (New Style: March
31), 1727, in London at the age of 84.

Sir Isaac Newton’s Education, Awards and

Achievements
Isaac Newton studied at the Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1661. At 22 in 1665, a year after beginning his four-
year scholarship, Newton finished his first significant
discovery in mathematics, where he revealed the
generalized binomial theorem. He was bestowed with
his B.A. degree in the same year.
Isaac Newton held numerous positions
throughout his life. In 1671, he was invited to join the
Royal Society of London after developing a new and
enhanced version of the reflecting telescope. He was
later elected President of the Royal Society (1703). Sir
Isaac Newton ran for a seat in Parliament in 1689. He
won the election and became a Member of Parliament
for Cambridge University. He was also appointed as a
Warden of the Mint in 1969. Due to his exemplary work
and dedication to the mint, he was chosen Master of the
Mint in 1700. After being knighted in 1705, he was
known as “Sir Isaac Newton.”

Here are some key points about his life and

work:

1. Optics and Light:

 Newton discovered the composition of
white light by passing sunlight through a
prism. This experiment revealed that
white light is made up of different colors
and laid the foundation for
modern physical optics.
 His work in optics is documented in his
book “Opticks”.
 The chromatic aberration never allowed the
separation, so he created a different telescope
using a mirror to focus on the light from the stars.
This became a reflecting telescope.

2. Laws of Motion and Gravitation:

 Newton formulated three laws of motion, which are
fundamental principles in modern physics.
 His most famous work, “Philosophiae Naturalis Principia
Mathematica” (Mathematical Principles of Natural
Philosophy, 1687), described these laws and introduced the
concept of universal gravitation.
 The law of universal gravitation states that every mass
attracts every other mass with a force proportional to the
product of their masses and inversely proportional to the
square of the distance between them.
3. Mathematics:
 Newton made significant contributions to mathematics.
 He independently developed infinitesimal calculus, although his work remained unpublished for over 30 years.
 His correspondence with Edmond Halley led to the publication of “Principia Mathematica.”
4. Legacy:
 Newton is regarded as one of the greatest scientists of all time.
 He was elected president of the Royal Society of London in 1703 and became the first scientist to
be knighted in 1705.
 His battle with G.W. Leibniz over the authorship of calculus dominated the last years of his life.
