• REGION – ANY AREAS ON EARTH WITH ONE OR MORE CHARACTERISTICS. REGION ARE THE BASIC
UNITS OF GEOGRAPHY.
• RURAL – AREAS WITH LOW POPULATION DENSITY AND LARGE AMOUNT OF UNDEVELOPED
LAND. OPPOSITE TO URBAN “THE COUNTRY”.
IMPORTANT TERMS
• SUBURBS – SMALLER URBAN AREAS THAT SURROUND CITIES, SERVES AS RESIDENTIAL AREA FOR MUCH OF THE
CITIES WORKFORCE.
• MEGAPOLIS – IS A GROUP OF METROPOLITAN AREAS WHICH ARE PERCEIVED AS A CONTINUOUS URBAN AREA
THROUGH COMMON SYSTEM OF TRANSPORT, ECONOMY, RESOURCES, ETC. “MEGAREGION”.

• URBAN PLANNING – URBAN PLANNING IS A MULTIDISCIPLINARY FIELD THAT INVOLVES THE ORGANIZATION
AND DESIGN OF URBAN AREAS, INCLUDING CITIES AND TOWNS. THE PRIMARY GOAL OF URBAN PLANNING IS TO
CREATE SUSTAINABLE, FUNCTIONAL, AND AESTHETICALLY PLEASING ENVIRONMENTS THAT ACCOMMODATE THE
NEEDS OF THE COMMUNITY WHILE CONSIDERING FACTORS SUCH AS POPULATION GROWTH, INFRASTRUCTURE,
TRANSPORTATION, LAND USE, AND ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY.
• REGIONAL PLANNING – REGIONAL PLANNING IS A DISCIPLINE WITHIN URBAN AND SPATIAL PLANNING THAT
FOCUSES ON THE COORDINATED DEVELOPMENT AND ORGANIZATION OF A LARGER GEOGRAPHIC AREA,
TYPICALLY BEYOND THE BOUNDARIES OF INDIVIDUAL MUNICIPALITIES.THIS PLANNING APPROACH INVOLVES THE
STRATEGIC CONSIDERATION OF LAND USE, INFRASTRUCTURE,TRANSPORTATION, ENVIRONMENTAL
SUSTAINABILITY, AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT ACROSS AN ENTIRE REGION. THE GOAL OF REGIONAL
PLANNING IS TO CREATE A COMPREHENSIVE AND INTEGRATED VISION FOR THE OVERALL DEVELOPMENT AND
GROWTH OF A BROADER GEOGRAPHICAL AREA, OFTEN ENCOMPASSING MULTIPLE CITIES, TOWNS, AND RURAL
AREAS.

• TOWN PLANNING – TOWN PLANNING, ALSO KNOWN AS TOWN AND COUNTRY PLANNING , IS A FIELD OF
STUDY AND PRACTICE THAT FOCUSES ON THE ORGANIZED DEVELOPMENT AND MANAGEMENT OF URBAN AND
RURAL AREAS. THE PRIMARY AIM OF TOWN PLANNING IS TO CREATE WELL-DESIGNED, SUSTAINABLE, AND LIVABLE
COMMUNITIES BY ADDRESSING VARIOUS ASPECTS OF LAND USE, INFRASTRUCTURE, PUBLIC SPACES, AND
ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS.
• URBAN DESIGN – Urban design is a field of study and practice that focuses on
shaping the physical layout, organization, and aesthetics of urban environments. It involves
the arrangement and design of buildings, public spaces, transportation systems, and other
elements within cities and towns to create functional, attractive, and sustainable places
for people to live, work, and interact. Urban design seeks to improve the quality of life in
urban areas by fostering a sense of community, enhancing mobility, and creating
aesthetically pleasing and efficient spaces.
URBAN AND REGIONAL PLANNING
• Planning, in a broad sense, refers to the process of setting goals, making decisions, and
organizing actions to achieve specific objectives. In the context of urban and regional
planning, planning involves the systematic development and coordination of policies,
programs, and projects to guide the growth, development, and use of land and resources
in a sustainable and organized manner. This field addresses various aspects, including land
use, transportation, housing, environmental conservation, and social services. Planners
work to create communities that are functional, resilient, and responsive to the needs of
the population while considering economic, social, and environmental factors.
