Assignment CE 3331

This document outlines a group assignment for a course on complex engineering problem solving. Students will be divided into groups of five. The assignment involves proposing a wastewater treatment plant design for a food processing industry to meet discharge guidelines and restore the ecological balance of a river impacted by an accidental spill.

Group project/Assignment: Complex engineering problem solving

Total marks: 70
Prepared by: Professor Dr. Tanveer Ferdous Saeed

This is a group project. Each group will include five students. Any
duplication/copying/cheating within the projects/assignments of the groups will lead to
cancellation of those projects.

ASSIGNMENT

Instructions: The course outcomes, program outcomes, knowledge profile, and complex
engineering problem-solving criteria linked with the assignment and students performance
marks rubrics to achieve the objectives of complex engineering problems are provided in
tables 1 and 2. You must demonstrate in-depth engineering knowledge/concept to design
treatment units that could fulfill public health and safety and of cultural, societal, and
environmental concerns of the specified area.

A food processing industry generates 2000 m 3/d of wastewater per day. The pollutant
concentration of the generated wastewater is given below.
 pH=5.0
 BOD5= 1500 × Y (Group number) mg/L
 COD= 3500× Y (Group number) mg/L
 NH4-N=100 × Y (Group number) mg/L
 TN= 250 × Y (Group number) mg/L
 TP= 30 × Y (Group number) mg/L

The industry used to discharge the wastewater directly into an adjacent river. Such disposal was
associated with massive aquatic pollution of the river. The local environmental regulation
authority instructed the food industry to treat wastewater before disposal. You have been
appointed as an environmental consultant to propose a treatment plant for that industry.
(a) Calculate the organic biodegradation ratio of the wastewater and comment on whether the
wastewater is biodegradable or not. [10 marks]
(b) Propose a treatment flow diagram for the industry so the treated effluent meets the local
discharge guidelines: BOD5= 20 mg/L, COD= 40 mg/L, NH4-N= 10 mg/L, TN= 30 mg/L,

TP=5 mg/L. Explain the pollutant removal mechanisms of your proposed treatment
system and the factors associated with maintaining its smooth operation. [30 marks]
(c) Due to accidental spillage of stored industrial chemicals into the river, the ecological
balance was severely disrupted. Substantial death of fish was observed in the river along
with the transformation of the river into a black water body. What engineering measures
would you undertake to restore the river's ecological balance and prevent similar
infrequent accidental incidents in the future? [30 marks]
