Statement of Procedure

of
Minor Degree for B.Tech. Students
[As approved by the Academic Council of the University in its 67th Meeting, Agenda Point 67.10]

1. Purpose:
(i) To give opportunity to the students to acquire a domain knowledge in certain area that
is NOT RELATED to his/her Major Discipline to pursue his/her additional allied
academic interest in contemporary area.
(ii) To gain skills to pursue interdisciplinary research and increase the employability
quotient.

2. Minor degree:
(i) A minor degree can be acquired by pursuing any one of the many Minor Tracks
offered by the University
(ii) A Minor Track is a defined as an ORDERED SEQUENCE of Five (5) courses
constituting 18-20 credits aimed to give a reasonable breadth and depth to the student
in certain domain NOT related to the major discipline.
(iii) Minor Track courses will be spread from 4th to 8th semester of the B.Tech. Program.
(iv) Credits earned through Minor Track will be in addition to the essential Credits
(>=160 Credits) to be earned for Major discipline of the regular B.Tech. Program.

3. Status of AICTE Approval


University may offer AICTE suggested Minor tracks or may design their own Minor
Tracks. No separate approval is required from AICTE for Minor degree.

4. Eligibility for Registration:
(i) Registration to the Minor Track will be done in 4th Semester provided interested students
possess a YGPA of 6.5 or above upto FIRST YEAR with all courses passed in one
attempt without grace. In case of Lateral Entry, he/she would be required to have
minimum CGPA of 6.5 or 65 percent marks, as the case may be, in his/her entry level
qualifying degree.
(ii) One can opt to register for maximum ONLY ONE Track (out of all Minor Tracks and
Honors Tracks) or None.

5. Example Minor Degree Name:


B.Tech. in Civil Engineering with minor degree in Data Science

6. Award of B. Tech. with Minor Degree:


(i) One will be eligible for award of Minor Degree, if he completes all the courses of chosen
Minor Track.
(ii) There will be no transfer of credit from Minor track to regular B.Tech degree Course of
major discipline or vice-versa.
(iii) All the courses of Minor Track have to be completed in one attempt.
(iv) If a student, who has registered for Minor Track, fails in any of the course of Minor
Track, his registration for Minor Track will cease to be active. Such a student will not be
eligible for award of the Minor degree. However, he/she will continue to be eligible for
award of his / her regular B.Tech. Degree.
(v) Moreover, in such cases where one is not able to complete the Minor track, the credits
earned by the students through the minor track will be recorded as Extra Credit on the
mark sheet.
(vi) One can graduate with Minor degree only if he/she fulfills the requirement for award of
the his/her regular B.Tech. degree in his/her major discipline.
(vii) The Minor degree must be simultaneously completed along with major degree. A student
can not earn minor degree later, if he/she has already completed and earned his major
degree.

(viii) Registration to the Minor degree will be valid only if registration to Major Discipline of
Regular B. Tech. degree exists. If one drops the registration to regular B.Tech. Program
or completes the regular B.Tech. Program, he/she will not be allowed to pursue his/her
minor degree program.
(ix) CGPA of the major degree and minor degree would be calculated separately and
mentioned on the Mark Sheet separately. The CGPA obtained in the major degree would
be treated as CGPA of the program without including accumulated grades from Minor
track. The division will be awarded based upon the performance in the regular B. Tech.
program only.

7. Registration Fee:
No additional Tuition Fee will be charged from the students registering for Minor degree.
Although, only a nominal token fee (non-refundable) of Rs 100=00 per semester must be
charged to confirm the active registration in each of the semester having minor course.

8. Record Keeping:
The institute and the University shall maintain the detailed record (minor program wise
as well as parent branch wise) of the students enrolled for the Minor degree.
