Title: Osmosis in Potato Cylinders

Aim: To investigate the effect of different sucrose concentrations on the mass of potato cylinders.

Materials/Apparatus:

 Distilled Water
 0.1M sucrose solution
 0.3M sucrose solution
 0.6M sucrose solution
 0.8M sucrose solution
 Digital Balance
 Knife
 Ruler
 Scalpel
 Beaker
 Stopwatch
 Cork borer
 Measuring cylinder
 Vegetable peeler
 Potatoes
 Petri Dishes and lids
 Tissue Napkins
 White Tile

Method:

Rewrite these steps in past tense.

1. Peel the potato.

2. Use the cork borer and cut ten cylinders of potato on the white tile.
3. Using a ruler and a small knife, trim ten cylinders to 4.0cm in length and place them in a beaker
of water during the cutting process.
4. Ensure the potato cylinders are cut evenly on all sides.
5. Label 5 petri dishes:
a. Distilled Water
b. 0.1M
c. 0.3M
d. 0.6M
e. 0.8M
6. Using a measuring cylinder, place 30-35cm3 of distilled water in the appropriately labelled petri
dish. Repeat for the four sucrose concentrations.
7. Blot dry two potato cylinders and weight them and record the results in a table.
8. Place these cylinders in a petri dish labelled distilled water.
9. Repeat this procedure for the other potato cylinders and sucrose concentrations.
10. Cover all petri dishes and leave undisturbed for 15-30 minutes.

11. After the time has expired, remove a cylinder from the distilled water, blot dry and reweigh.
Reweigh this procedure for the other Petri dishes and record all the results in a table.
12. Explain any changes in weight within the discussion.

Results:

Sucrose Mass of Potato Cylinders/g

Concentration/ Mass before Immersion/g Mass after immersion/g
M Cylinder 1 Cylinder 2 Average Cylinder 1 Cylinder 2 Average
0.0
0.1
0.3
0.6
0.8

Discussion:

In your discussion, ensure you:

 Define Osmosis
 Explain the differences in weight, or lack thereof, for the distilled water and different sucrose
concentrations.
 Explain why it was necessary to peel the potato.
 Explain why the Petri dishes were covered for the time period.
