ABSTRACT: This study looked into the privacy and security concerns that Nova Schola
students had when using Facebook, with an emphasis on their attitudes and behaviors.
Purposive sampling was used to select ten (10) students from Nova Schola Tanauan to serve as
the study's responders. With their permission, a one-on-one interview is conducted using nine
(9) interview guide questions and a voice recorder and the data was interpreted using thematic
analysis. The study also shown how similar the perspectives of the students were based on the
following themes: (1) identity theft, (2) an overpopulated app, (3) an app full of scammers, (4)
cyberbullying, (5) confusing terms and conditions, (6) an app full of hackers. Aside from this, the
students' actions in these concerns included: (1) awareness of privacy safety, (2) being aware of
users' audience, (3) making account private, (4) being cautious when sharing information, and
(5) unique password. The study's findings indicate that the participants accurately articulated
and detailed their own perspectives and actions concerning privacy and security issues on
Facebook.

INTRODUCTION
Facebook is a social networking service that makes it simple to communicate and share
content with loved ones online. Facebook was developed by Mark Zuckerberg in 2004 while he
was a student at Harvard University with the initial intention of serving college students (Nations,
2021). Moreover, Facebook is an online social network that facilitates connections between
individuals, users can participate in discussions and offer ideas by exchanging content such as
text status updates, photos, videos, and external links like blog entries with others who have
similar or different interests (Chi, 2021).
Furthermore, as discussed by Nyoni and Velempini (2018), Facebook uses user
information, including activity and interest data, to display advertising and sponsored content
that are personalized and may be more relevant. Apart from this, according to Facebook (2023),
Facebook connects users based on common interests and backgrounds, allowing them to
associate with similar-minded organizations. Users create online profiles with personal
information like name and email address. Facebook users frequently update their statuses,
which are public domain and accessible to everyone. An attacker can gather and target users
based on the personal information they reveal, as well as the type of material uploaded.
Moreover, privacy is described as the right of individuals, groups, or organizations to
restrict the amount of information about them that can be shared with other parties. The right to

privacy is the authority over personal data pertaining to certain people or groups. Several social
networking sites have been taken into consideration in this day and age. Individuals from a
variety of age groups frequently use these websites to keep up with global events (Erlandsson,
2012).
In addition, there is no shortage of possible threats that could endanger users in this
community of users that exchange data and images (Kerner, n.d.). Moreover, considering the
efforts made by companies and governments to increase online learning and the rise of social
media platforms, the Facebook incident shows growing worries about the privacy of student
data (Strauss, 2018). Furthermore, student information is at risk every day from the same thing
that personal information is taken advantage of by digital platforms with little control or
accountability. In addition, due to a lack of public control over digital platforms, a de facto public
policy has emerged, predicated on the idea that personal data belongs to corporations and that
virtual space is privately held. When personal data is exploited in ways that affect people
personally and socially, the public is left with little to no obvious recourse (Molnar and Boninger,
n.d.).
As well as that, Facebook has faced criticism from all sides in recent years to streamline
privacy settings and make them easier to modify. In fact, they have done rather well here,
keeping in mind the general complexity of Facebook's privacy mechanism. But for those of us
who are familiar with the privacy controls, there are some adjustments Facebook may do to
enhance their impact (Randall, 2012).
In addition, Facebook had 2.989 billion monthly active users in April 2023 (Kemp, 2023).
There are sure to be privacy and security problems when this much precise information is
arranged uniformly and collected in one location making this the gap of the research. Users may
enter their information without being aware that it can be sent to marketers. Facebook data may
be compiled by outside parties for commercial purposes. Passwords or entire datasets may be
stolen from Facebook by hackers (Albesher & Alhussain, 2013).
Specifically, this research aims to investigate the privacy and security perceptions and
practices of Nova Schola Tanauan students on Facebook. In the contemporary digital age,
social media platforms, particularly Facebook, have become integral tools for communication
and information sharing among students, including those enrolled at Nova Schola Tanauan.
While these platforms offer numerous benefits in terms of connectivity and information
exchange, they also raise significant concerns regarding privacy and security. According to
McKenna and Bargh (2019), the central problem under examination is whether the students are
adequately aware of the privacy and security risks associated with their Facebook usage and
whether their practices align with their perceptions. The researchers successfully aimed to
answer the following questions:

1. What is the perception of Nova Schola Tanauan students regarding the privacy and
security information on Facebook?
2. What practices do students at Nova Schola Tanauan take in response to Facebook
users' privacy and security concerns?

The scope of this study was to identify students at Nova Schola's concerns about their
privacy and security using the Facebook application. It was also shown that students have

privacy and security concerns on Facebook. This study will focus on junior and senior high
students of Nova Schola Tanauan regarding how they view and handle security and privacy
issues when using Facebook. This could include a range of issues, including data privacy,
cyberbullying, identity theft, and others. This affected the chosen Nova Schola Tanauan
students' ability to recognise prominent privacy and security issues among Nova Schola
Tanauan students, comprehend their understanding of Facebook privacy settings, and evaluate
their practices in response to these issues. The goal of this research is to deal with Nova Schola
Tanauan students' privacy and security concerns on Facebook and to ensure that the student's
personal information and online activities are secured and handled appropriately.
When an individual downloads Facebook, they are required to give some personal
information. Concerns like this can give several benefits to both the user and the platform itself.
(1) Students. This research can be used by the students to be more informed on what should be
done and be disregarded in giving the information to Facebook, and make good decisions about
privacy. (2) New users. This will be given more options for understanding the perception and
practices of security. (3) Everyday users. They can be more intrigued by using Facebook
because the users' information is linked to the platform and that can lead to the platform
recommending the user's interest. (4) I.T. experts can help with the platform and can educate
early or new users about the security of their personal information. (5) Future Researchers. The
summary of this study will encourage broader viewpoints, which will be helpful in future talks
about this kind of problem and could result in a more in-depth investigation.

METHODOLOGY
The researchers employed a qualitative design to explore the perceived effects and
behaviors of Nova Schola Tanauan students regarding the privacy and security information on
Facebook. According to Girardin (2023), qualitative research uses social organization and
human behavior to gather insights and comprehend people's experiences and viewpoints. This
study seeks to determine whether the students are conscious of the privacy and security risks
associated with using Facebook.
Furthermore, the researchers selected ten (10) participants from the students of Nova
Schola Tanauan who took the interview. The researchers had explored how important privacy
and security are to the respondents as well as how the respondents will protect the privacy of
their Facebook accounts. Also, the researchers utilized purposive sampling as their sampling
strategy, a non-probability technique where researchers selected particular individuals who will
aid the study in achieving its objectives using their experience (Frost, 2023). Moreover,
according to Nikolopoulou (2022), the primary objective of purposive sampling is to pinpoint the
instances, people, or communities most appropriate to assist you in addressing your research
topic. The respondents ought to use the Facebook app more frequently since, in contrast to
non-users, they have greater app experience and knowledge of Facebook's security and
privacy. Further, the researchers are interested in gaining insights into their overall Facebook
experience.
The study employed nine (9) interview-guide questions (IGQ) to determine how Nova
Schola students perceived privacy and security issues on Facebook, as well as their practices in
this particular field. The research adviser was consulted and gave permission to utilize the

interview-guide questions in order to guarantee their authenticity. The production of letters and
waiting for confirmation comprised phase one of the research, and interview-based data
collection constituted phase two. In order to conduct an interview, the researchers first had to
sign a consent form that they had written. Additionally, the inquiries will be carried out in the
second phase through one-on-one discussions with the participants. Furthermore, prior to the
interviews, the researchers briefed the participants on the aim of the study. Also, descriptive
analysis will be performed to review the students' answers after the interview to gain insight into
their Facebook security and privacy concerns.
Moreover, in order to better understand how Nova Schola Tanauan students perceive
their security and privacy on the Facebook application, the researchers used the thematic
analysis method, which aids in the analysis of the researchers' qualitative data. Thematic
analysis is a widely used, adaptable, and easily accessible technique for analyzing qualitative
data (Virginia & Victoria, 2012). After conducting the interview, the researchers will gather the
data and examine it to identify common perceptions or ideas that come up repeatedly in the
interviewee’s answer. The researchers will conduct the following stages of thematic analysis: (1)
Familiarizing the data; (2) Initiating the codes; (3) Generating the themes; (4) reviewing themes;
(5) Defining and naming themes; and (6) Writing it all up.

RESULTS
1. The perceptions of the participants about privacy and security concerns on
Facebook
A number of questions about the Facebook privacy and security concerns of Nova
Schola students were included in the interview guide. We asked about the perspectives of each
participant on Facebook regarding privacy and security concerns. The responses from the
students were arranged, examined, and expressed as follows:

Theme 1: Facebook has a lot of issue about identity theft

Students are more vulnerable to identity theft on Facebook due to the high number of
people that engage in theft. Theft can use stolen personal information to assume identities of
real people, which can result in financial fraud or other nefarious deeds. The comments
revealed this theme.
As stated by participant 1, “Kapag too much kasi tayo nag sh-share sa Facebook, yung
post nila.” (When we share too much on Facebook, thieves are said to be looking at the
Facebook accounts of the posts and they are looking at the personal information of the victims
through their Facebook posts.)
(I also share a lot
of personal information because there are people who can use personal information like that
because they have an idea of who you are and you can be targeted for theft.) These claims
suggested that identity theft is a major problem for Facebook.

Students on Facebook: Perceptions and Practices

As to Benzola's (2019) findings, it is possible for hundreds of individuals to be seeing

your Facebook photos on an account that is not yours. Identity theft on Facebook has grown to
be a serious issue in recent years, with victims finding it difficult to restore their true identities on
the network. Moreover, through its IdentityTheft.gov website, the Federal Trade Commission
received over 1.1 million reports of identity theft (O'Shea, 2023). To sum up, identity theft is a
serious concern for students, who should take precautions to protect their personal data, make
good use of privacy settings, and report any questionable activity on the site.

Theme 2: Facebook is an overpopulated application

Due to the overwhelming number of users on Facebook, students are more likely to get
unsolicited friend requests, fall victim to frauds, and struggle to control their privacy settings.
And due to the platform's large user base, issues with data security and content moderation
additionally carry a risk of cyberbullying, content spread, and long-term effects on students'
academic and career prospects. This theme was observed from responses.
According to participant 2, “Di naman po lahat ng user sa Facebook is mabait or di
(Not all Facebook users are nice or it's really
overcrowded on Facebook so that's why I'm also worried about who can view my profile.) And
participant 6 also observed, "For me, conscious parin ako sa mga nag vi-view ng information
(For me, I am still conscious
of those who view information and my posts on Facebook because there are lots of them using
Facebook, especially by those who react to my posts because sometimes I don't know who they
are.) This statement implies that Facebook is overcrowded and not all users are benevolent.
According to Similarweb (2023), Facebook is the most popular social media app in
terms of visits and usage. Young kids and adolescents are at serious risk from a variety of
factors, including exposure to explicit information, the possibility of risky communication, identity
theft, scams, and backdoors to the web (Cutler, 2023). With that, students can more skillfully
manage the difficulties brought on by Facebook's massive user base by exercising caution in
their online behavior and improving their privacy and security settings.

Theme 3: Facebook if full of Scammers

Facebook is a widely used app that is available everywhere and is full of people's
updates, posts, stories, and other personal information. However, it is also full of people who
use various techniques to take advantage of others with the same goal in mind—scamming.
The following is a list of student responses that suit the specified theme.
With that, participant 3 said, " Pwede itong ma copy or magamit ng isang tao at gagawin
lang itong ano pang uri ng scam, like gagawin nilang yung another ikaw para lang makapag
scam." (It can be copied or used by someone and just turn it into another kind of scam, like they
will turn it into another account just to scam.) Participant 7 also said, "Ang possible na ma
encounter ko na kung danger when using facebook are scammers.'' ( It is possible that I will
encounter the danger when using Facebook are scammers.) Using these information,
scammers would scam other people. and there are many different ways that scammers can
scam Facebook users.

5
Privacy and Security Concerns of Nova Schola
Students on Facebook: Perceptions and Practices

This evidence to the study of Fletcher (2023), there are multiple ways in which
scammers benefit from social media platforms like Facebook. Social media scams are an issue
for people of all ages, according to reports, but the statistics are more startling for the younger
generation. More than thirty percent of the time in the first half of 2023, social media was the
form of contact for those between the ages of 20 and 29 who reported losing money to fraud.
Being the most popular online app, Facebook also attracts scammers who try to trick its users.
Cyber security watchdog statistics indicate that approximately 62% of Facebook users come
across scams on a weekly basis (Hutchinson, 2022). Consequently, learners can lessen their
vulnerability to Facebook scams and safeguard their security and privacy by being alert and
implementing security best practices.

Theme 4: Facebook has a lot of cyberbullying

Since facebook is a huge platform all over the world, cyberbullying can’t be avoided.
Cyberbullying occurs when a certain person gets backlash online from people(s). The following
is a list of student responses that suit the specified theme.
is that my account is very lowkey, that's my way to avoid cyberbullying That's why my account is
super lowkey, because I'm worried that someone might bully me). According to this statement,
Facebook is an app that has cyberbullying and can have serious negative effects on students'
security and privacy.
According to Ranch (2022), cyberbullying is a type of emotional bullying that occurs only
online and is usually used to denigrate or reveal personal information about another person in
an effort to humiliate, embarrass, or discourage the victim. Social media platforms are also
relatively open, so messages can easily reach a large audience. Furthermore, people can
express their opinions and feelings anonymously on social media platforms, which makes it
simpler for them to be cruel or harmful (Atty. Bergman, 2023). Hence, because of the platform's
large user base, cyberbullying incidents can be more difficult to control and lessen, endangering
students' online safety and security.

Theme 5: Facebook’s terms and condition is confusing

Facebook contains numerous legal terms and conditions that are important to consider
because they govern the platform's dos and don'ts. However, some users choose to disregard
these terms and conditions, as they are unaware of them. A list of student answers that fit the
given theme is shown below.
Participant 8 statement says that “Yes, actually the settings are constructed really
ang english so ayun.” (Yes, actually the settings are constructed really complicated, it's
complicated by co-constructing it especially since English is not our first language so that's it.) In
addition, participant 10 said, “Hindi.. ang haba at nakakalito kasi.” (No, It’s long and confusing.)
This comment implies that students' worries about their privacy and security may be
exacerbated by Facebook's confusing terms and conditions. The following is a list of student
responses that suit the specified theme.

6
Privacy and Security Concerns of Nova Schola
Students on Facebook: Perceptions and Practices

To support this, Facebook hasn't given its contemporary audience an explanation of its
policies. We possess the data, such as the relationships you form, the opportunities and settings
you choose, and the information you disclose and withdraw from people you interact with
(Habib, 2020). Also, 91% of users agree to the terms and conditions without reading them,
according to a 2017 Deloitte survey (Cakebread, 2017). Just 1% of participants in a social
experiment truly read the terms of conditions, according to ProPrivacy.com, a digital privacy
organization, which asserts that the figure is higher (Sandle, 2020). In the end, Facebook's
terms and conditions require more clarity, more user-friendliness, and increased openness.
Fostering a secure online environment requires providing users, especially students, with clear
information about their rights, data usage regulations, and privacy settings.

Theme 6: Facebook has a lot of users that are hackers

Facebook is widely used, so the probability of hacking efforts aimed at student accounts
is increased when there are a lot of hacker users on the platform. These cybercriminals could
use a variety of strategies to obtain sensitive data and personal information without
authorization.
accounts mo, yung mga danger na pwede ma-encounter ng taong yun is hacking, which is
super dangerous.” (When a person is oversharing too much with your facebook accounts, the
danger that that person can encounter is hacking, which is super dangerous.) Additionally,
according to participant 5, “Kapag may mga na sh-share tayong masyadong information
maaring may kumuha ng ating other information at gamitin ito sa ibang bagay like hacking mga
ganon.” (When there are people who share too much information, someone may take our other
information and use it for something else like hacking.) This statement suggests that Facebook
is putting a lot of user data at risk, which could result in security and privacy issues for students.
To support, according to Price (2021), Facebook is still an excellent source but users
should be mindful of the risks it transports, just like any other social network. Boyer (2023)
believes that it's critical to think about the repercussions in the event that cybercriminals access
your private information. It is dangerous to publish too many specific facts online as this may
lead to financial loss, break-ins, or even jeopardize your safety. In conclusion, Facebook must
prioritize implementing strong security measures, react quickly to security issues, and openly
inform users of the actions it has taken to improve platform security.

2. The practices of the participants about Privacy and Security concerns on

Facebook
The study's participants discussed how they handle privacy and security concerns on
Facebook. It includes the descriptions of the actions they took in response to it. The responses
from the pupils are arranged, examined, and thematized below.

Theme 1: Awareness of Privacy Safety

Privacy portrays an important role in terms of protecting a person’s dignity and safety.
The use of social media platforms creates risk in a person’s safety because of the data it needs
for access. May it be for entertainment or purely educational, an individual is required to provide

7
Privacy and Security Concerns of Nova Schola

personal information to have access in any social media platforms. The following is a list of
student responses that suit the specified theme.
Participant 2 said, “If nag a-alarm po kasi yung Facebook diba na parang nakalagay dun
(If Facebook gives an alarm, isn't it like it says there if
someone tries to open your account, when someone does that alert, I change the password of
the account.) In addition, participant 3 explains, “Ang ginagawa ko nalang is nilalagyan ko siya
ng second verification like mag t-text sa phone number ko and lalagay yung code para mas
lalong protected.” (What I do is I put a second verification on him like text my phone number and
put the code to be more protected.) These claims suggest that maintaining privacy safety can
keep Facebook secure and private.
According to the Office of Victorian Information Commissioner [OVIC] (n.d.), the larger
right to privacy depends on information privacy. It has to do with a person's capacity to decide
for themselves when, how, and why third parties handle their personal data. Maintaining privacy
is essential to upholding human dignity, security, and autonomy. It permits people to freely
cultivate their own personalities. Furthermore, examples of additional security methods are
two-factor authentication and two-step verification. Any combination of two knowledge,
possession, and inheritance factors— including repeated factors— is used in two-step
verification techniques. In the meanwhile, 2FA techniques need to be two different approaches,
such as a password and username combination in addition to facial recognition (Wigmore,
2023). Thus, protecting your privacy on Facebook can assist you in lowering the possibility of
issues related to privacy and security.

Theme 2: Being Conscious about User’s Audience

Social media users have no influence on outside forces once something is shared on the
platform, whether it is favorable or negative. Opinions, comments, and interactions are all part of
what leads to a user and individual's involvement. By managing who can view your posts,
images, and private information on Facebook, you can lower the possibility of oversharing with
an unauthorized audience. The following is a list of student responses that suit the specified
theme.
Participant 1 explained, “From time to time tinitingnan ko yung ang mga nag rereact sa
("From time to time I look at
those who have reacted to my account and also to my story and also to the posts.") Again,
participant 1 also said, “Pinagiisipan ko po talaga yung mga ipopost ko sa public and
nagpo-post lang po ako sa public pag or shinashare ko lang po sa public is mga academic
purposes.” (I really think about what I post to the public and I only post to the public or share it
with the public for academic purposes.) Additionally, participant 5 said, “Kapag mga family
Hahahaha”
("When it's family, of course it's only the good posts. With friends, can the rude ones be okay?
Hahahaha") Furthermore, participant 7 said, “Syempre if friends is okay naman mag share ng
kung ano ano since they're trusted naman, sa public naman is 50/50 because i never post
anything na naka public.” (Of course if friends, it's okay to share something since I trust them, in
public it's 50/50 because I never post anything that's public.) In addition, participant 10

8
Privacy and Security Concerns of Nova Schola
Students on Facebook: Perceptions and Practices

kanila kasi syempre memes and everything or mga inappropriate.” (Depending on whether it's
my friends or my teachers, I’m using the friend except option for them so that they can’t see my
posts like memes and everything or inappropriate ones.) These claims suggest that you may
greatly lower the possibility of privacy and security problems on Facebook by actively controlling
your audience and being aware of who can view your post.
As a result, social media represents our digital state, and our personal network serves as
our ZIP code. We have the power to bring about constructive change and improve our
community's online living environment. "Who knows you matters more than who you know"
(Hillyer, 2017). Recall that protecting your privacy on social media is a continuous effort, and
that it's critical to keep up with platform updates and potential hazards.

Theme 3: Making Account Private

Many Facebook users prefer to keep their profiles private in order to protect their
security and privacy. By limiting who has access to your personal information, using a private
account on Facebook can help alleviate certain privacy and security worries. The following is a
list of student responses that suit the specified theme.
Participant 1 said, “Hindi ako basta basta nag a-add friend and konti lang yung friends
ko sa Facebook tapos naka private account pa so yun yung way ko para protektahan yung sa
security ko sa Facebook ko.” (I don't just add friends and I only have a few friends on Facebook
and then have a private account, so that's my way to protect my security on my Facebook.)
Additionally, participant 2 mentioned, “Hindi po ko masyado pala post and yung account ko po is
(I don't post much and my account is
private, especially personal information.)
(I lock my
Facebook and I don't share my information very much.) In addition, participant 7 said, “By not
sharing background or personal information about me and my family.” Also, participant 9 stated,
“Hindi ako nag popost, hindi din ako nagsasabi kung kani-kanino ng aking password.” (I'm not
posting anything, I'm not telling anyone my password.) According to these claims, having a
private Facebook account can lessen some privacy and security worries to Nova Schola
students.
In order to support it, One of the primary reasons in support of keeping your social media
accounts private is to lessen the possibility of identity theft. This is the point at which someone
obtains enough of your personal data to assume your identity (ESET, 2022). Furthermore, Kim
(2015) asserts that security and privacy are two sides of the same coin, with information that
isn't secure by definition not being private. For this reason, a private account on Facebook offers
a greater level of security.

Theme 4: Being Conscious when Sharing Information

Shared content on social media enhances your online reputation. Being mindful of the
material you provide online keeps your online identity good and helps you steer clear of any
miscommunications or reputational harm to yourself or other professional reputation.
Furthermore, sharing information with awareness lowers the possibility that you would
unintentionally reveal private or sensitive information. The following is a list of student
responses that suit the specified theme.

(When it comes to personal details such as IDs,
passports, if it is not required to be posted publicly, I do not post them, but if it is required or
there is a situation where I need to post them, I cover up the personal information that is
important.) In addition, participant 3 explained, “Pwede naman ikaw mag share or post ng
memes pero it's better na mag post narin ng mga news or information na nanggagaling sa mga
TV or radio para mas ma aware mga tao kung anong meron sa nangyayari sa bansa natin or
sa iba pa. Mas maganda na mag research deep more if ever na trusted yung kukuha nating site
para mas malinaw.” (You can share or post memes, but it is better to post news or information
that comes from TV or radio so that people are more aware of what is happening in our country
or in others. It's better to research deeper more if ever the site we're going to get is trusted so
it's clearer.) Moreover, participant 4 said, “I know my limitations na pag dating sa oversharing
or… personal information.” (I know my limitations when it comes to oversharing or... personal
information.) In addition, according to participant 4,“Hindi ako naglalagay ng information
pagdating sa Facebook account, instagram account or some more.
don't put information when it comes to my Facebook, Instagram, or some more.) Along with this,
(I restrict the sharing of my accounts
with others as they have no idea about passwords and everything in accounts.) Furthermore,
(I really think about what I'm going to say and what I type on
Facebook if it offends other people or if there are people who may not like my post.)
Furthermore, participant 6 also said, “Kapag nag p-post ako sa Facebook, tinitingnan ko pa rin
yung mga comments from other people or yung mga friends ko kung yung sinasabi ba nila is
magiging helpful sa akin.” (When I post on Facebook, I still look at the comments from other
people or my friends to see if what they say will be helpful to me.) Along with, participant 8
(I only post something that
is just pictures that don't have much information about myself.) These statements suggest that
avoiding privacy and security risks on Facebook requires you to be cautious and aware of the
information you post.
According to Patel (2020), individuals would want to share their images since sharing
them is so simple and appealing with phones that have cameras. It is also challenging to claim
that every photo that is uploaded will one day be hacked or lead to a scam. The position of an
individual can be used to identify them more readily in images that show their social interactions
and overall context, giving hackers additional access to personal data.TO sum up, lower the
possibility of possible privacy and security problems on the platform by being cautious about the
content you publish and the audience that you share it.

Theme 5: Strong Password

10
Privacy and Security Concerns of Nova Schola
Students on Facebook: Perceptions and Practices

It is essential for students to use strong passwords. They safeguard your private
information by preventing illegal access to your computer accounts and gadgets. The more
difficult the password, the more secure your data will be against hackers and online threats. The
following is a list of student responses that suit the specified theme.
According to participant 4, “Meron talaga akong specific or super unique na password
and hindi talaga ako nagsasabi ng password to everyone.” (I really have a specific or super
unique password and I don't really tell everyone the password.) Additionally, participant 5 stated,
“I use maraming characters sa mga passwords ganon.” (I use many characters in my
passwords.) Furthermore, participant 6 stated, “Pag cre-create ng strong password and two
(By
creating a strong password and two authentication codes so I know who is opening my
Facebook.) These assertions demonstrate that using a unique password increases the difficulty
of unwanted users accessing your Facebook account.
In accordance to the National Cybersecurity Alliance (2023), hackers will have a harder
time deciphering a Facebook password that has a combination of numbers, symbols, and
capital and lowercase characters. This technique generates a stronger and more random
password, which improves security and lessens the possibility of illegal access to the user's
account. Undoubtedly, one of the most important things you can do to safeguard your online
security and privacy is to create a strong and distinctive password for your Facebook account.

3. Proposed Action Plan

DISCUSSION
Following the interviews, the researcher examined the respondents' and students'
opinions regarding Facebook security and privacy issues. Following data analysis, the data was
organized into eleven (11) topics. From their responses, we were able to ascertain the following:
(1) identity theft; (2) an overpopulated app; (3) an app full of scammers; (4) cyberbullying; (5)
confusing terms and conditions; (6) an app full of hackers; (7) awareness of privacy safety; (8)
being aware of users' audience; (9) making account private; (10) being cautious when sharing
information; and (11) unique password. However, the action plan recommends the following: (1)
LockDown: A Privacy Quest; and (2) SecurEdu: A Seminar on Facebook Safety. These topics
demonstrated how understanding views and actions helps learners in comprehending
Facebook's privacy and security concerns.
As a result, the study's participants concluded that knowing Facebook's security and
privacy concerns helps them to be aware of potential problems with the platform. The
respondents also discussed the steps they take to safeguard themselves against Facebook
security and privacy issues.
These are recommendations that should be helpful to students, as the researchers have
already drawn previous conclusions and arrived at the above findings. The report advises users
to concentrate on their Facebook privacy and security in order to prevent cybersecurity risks that
may arise from inadequate understanding of account security. In order to prevent false
information from spreading throughout their research, students should be aware of the events of
the present world and seek for trustworthy sources. Furthermore, later researchers could take
their time during the interview procedure and speak with users who have more app experience.
In conclusion, future studies might concentrate on finding additional interview subjects in order
to better comprehend the students' worries about security and privacy.

APPENDIX D: Interview Transcription

SP1: What is the perception of Nova Schola students regarding the privacy and security
information on Facebook?

A. How can you be certain that your Facebook use is secure?

Student 1: So syempre with ano sa password diba lahat naman ng facebook account is may

ng account kase di mo ma a access agad yung password or yung account name mo unless
alam mo yung previous password.

his/if ano….

Student 4: Siguro because ano…meron akong access sa ano ko security and privacy ko..so

Student 5: I think ano naman secure naman sya kasi im aware of the ano naman etiquettes
ganon.

Student 6: Uhm.. I am certain na secure yung FB ko uhm with the use of uhm, paglalagay ko ng
So, ayun, nagiging certain ako na
secure yung Facebook ko pag ganon.

Student 7: I can reassure na secure ang facebook account ko since ayun nga hindi ako
naglalagay ng personal informations like phone number or ano bank account.

Student 8: By ano po, interms of knowing na ako lang andon regulary ko chinecheck yung mga
logged in devices and if ano if about sa mga pinopost ko syempre yung mga pinopost ko

29
Privacy and Security Concerns of Nova Schola
Students on Facebook: Perceptions and Practices

Student 9: Well ‘yung privacy settings ko is alam kong secured s’ya and ‘yung mga bagay dun is
laging naka only me lang ‘yun ganon tapos ‘yung password naman is of course hindi s’ya

happens.. happens nalang.

B. Are you aware of Facebook's terms and conditions?

Student 3: Yes, so pag… everytime mag cli-click kasi ako ng link may lalabas na terms and
condition so binabasa muna ito (binabasa ko muna ito), and yun.

Student 4: Siguro because ano…meron akong access sa ano ko security and privacy ko..so

Student 5: Yes, aware ako kasi napag aaralan naman sya since grade 11.

Student 6: Uhm.. as I mentioned earlier yung about sa gmail uhm kapag may nagbubukas ng
terms and condition ng facebook.

Student 7: Ah yes, aware naman ako sa terms and condition ng facebook since simula palang
ng paggagawa ng account is nakalagay na yon dun for starter.

Student 8: Honestly, no po.

Student 9: Yeah.

Student 10: Hindi.. ang haba kasi at nakakalito tas nag create nalang ako ng accounts nung
nagkaroon ng terms and conditions then go facebook facebook malala.

C. Regarding privacy, are there any specific settings or features that you find difficult to
understand?
Student 1: Um.. wala naman po kasi like what I said nga po kung aware po ako sa diba sa
terms and condition is wala po akong alam about that so hindi then po ako nag aano sa settings
or sa feature ng facebook basta nalang po ako gumagamit nito so wala naman po.

30

Student 3: For now, wala naman.

Student 4: Wala naman, since for the settings or features ano lang sya something super
common nya so wala naman talaga.

Student 5: Wala naman, since yun nga napag aaralan naman sya so ayun, sherempre

Student 6: Uhm as someone who is always using facebook uhm wala akong nakikitang any

Student 8: Yes, actually the settings are constructed really uhm ano yun complicated, ang
complicated ng pag coconstruct nya specially hindi naman natin first language ang english so
yun.

Student 9: Wala.

naman sya for everyone for use.

D. What dangers can users like you encounter if they share too much personal
information on Facebook? How can you protect yourself if you are in this situation?
Student 1: So yung panganib is kapag too much kasi tayo nag sh-share sa Facebook, yung
maging ammm mag over Sherve or maging to much yung pag shashare ko don sa facebook
tapos genon nga mangyayari so yun pinag iisipan ko muna.

Facebook nagagamit nakikita yung account mo so ayun po by switching my account po to

31
Privacy and Security Concerns of Nova Schola
Students on Facebook: Perceptions and Practices

Student 3: If ganyan, if nasa ganyang situation ako na maraming ano.. Maraming nag shshare
ng marami or nag shshare ng too much information lalo na pag personal pwede itong ma copy

Student 4: So kapag kunyare as ano, ikaw na person is masyado kang oversharing sa mga
I mean na shshare mo

Student 6: So, what dangers can users like me encounter if i share too much information sa fb
uhm personally kapag nag share kasi tayo ng too much information sa fb uhm hindi na tayo
nagiging aware sa consequences nung mga action nating yon and kapag nasa situation akong
ganito and naka share ako ng too much information siguro ma proprotect ko yung sarili ko uhm

scammers.

Student 8: Yes, specially kapag hindi ko kilala like i would die to know kung who they are parang
bakit, ano meron.

Student 9: Mga encounter ng mga cyberbullying ganyan so ang sakin naman is ayun nga yung
account ko is very lowkey s’ya so ‘yun, ‘yun ‘yung way ko para makaiwas sa mga cyberbullying
ganon.

E. Do you worry about who can view the information and posts you make on Facebook?
nakakakita non and then yung mga friends ko pong is lahat po yun is kakilala ko and then ka
pong mga post and then um… stories so naka only friends lamang po siya.

32
Privacy and Security Concerns of Nova Schola
Students on Facebook: Perceptions and Practices

Student 4: So speaking of facebook or kung specific sa facebook, meron kasing settings sa

facebook na audience and visibility so its up on you kung sino yung magiging um..—-magiging
or— or kung magiging audience mo or sinong pipiliin mong magiging audince mo so nasa
person yun eh, kung gusto mo na friends lang pwede mo syang i set dun sa audience and
visibility like hindi naman sigurong—ano—I mean….Tungkol dun sa audience and visibility ikaw

Student 5: Yes, since personal information yung iba don sherempre na aware ako dun.

Student 6: Uhm for me conscious parin ako sa mga nag viview ng uhm information and yung

Student 8: Yes, specially kapag hindi ko kilala like i would die to know kung who they are parang
bakit, ano meron.

SP2: What practices do students at Nova Schola take in response to Facebook users'
privacy and security concerns?

A. What procedures are you taking to protect your security and privacy on Facebook?
Student 1: Um.. hindi ako diba yung iba is parang basta basta nag aadd friend kahit di nila kilala
well me di kosya ginagawa kaya If stalk niya man ako or what is amm konti lang yung friends ko
sa facebook tapos naka private account pa so yun yung way ko para protektahan yung sa
security ko sa facebook ko.

33
Privacy and Security Concerns of Nova Schola
Students on Facebook: Perceptions and Practices

( interviewer: So by doing that sure ka na secure yung account mo?) secure opo.

Like something..ano lang I know my limitations na pag
dating sa oversharing or… personal information.

Student 6: Sa facebook?

nga pag crecreate ng strong password and yung uhm.. uhm.. two authentication code para yun
syempre yung hindi pag shashare ng too much information about myself and kunware uhm..
uhm.. information about sakin to uhm to have privacy narin so ayun secure ako sa
pamamagitan non.

Student 8: So first is yung regularly pag c-change ng password so bale monthly or every other
month and then yung mga pinopost ko is something not personal na alam nyo yun like wala
masyadong makukuhang info like my birthday or like ssid ganon.

account ko e no?....

B. Do you regularly change your password or take any additional measures to secure
your Facebook account?

34
Privacy and Security Concerns of Nova Schola
Students on Facebook: Perceptions and Practices

Student 3: No, I don’t usually eventually change my fb password because uhh sapat na aking
password to be secured.

Student 4: No, umm… ano meron talaga akong specific or super unique na password so hindi
talaga ako nagsasabi ng password to everyone kahit friends man yan, so hindi naman ako nag
woworry about that kasi I know my limitations naman.

since mahaba sya and madaming characters.

Student 6: Uhm.. for me naman since strong naman yung password ko and mahirap sya uhm
account ko kasi naniniwala naman ako na uhm maayos yung system ng fb when it regards to
uhm making security.

Student 7: Yes, just to be secure and to avoid hackers narin ganon.

Student 8: Yes, I change my password monthly or every other month.

naoopen.

C. How conscious are you of your audience when posting on Facebook?

Student 1: Ahh,, ano from time to time tinitingnan ko yung ang mga nag rereact siguro ginagawa

Student 3: Hindi ko sya masasagot yung question nayan, because im not even posting pic– post
or sharing pictures.

35
Privacy and Security Concerns of Nova Schola
Students on Facebook: Perceptions and Practices

Student 4: Ayon, like what I’ve said kanina is up to you kung sinong audience yung gusto mong
makakita ng ano, so hindi naman talaga ako ganon ka conscious kase, kung makikita man yung
facebook account ko is naka public yun, since yung facebook na yunn is for stranger talaga, like
lahat friend, strangers, or someone na hindi ko talaga kilala personally, so meron talaga akong
account na para sa family ko lang or super close friends so ayun.

Student 5: Conscious? In the rate of 1-10? 10 yun.

(How?)

comments from other people or yung mga friends ko kung yung sinasabi ba nila is magiging

Student 7: Ano if i will rate it naman out of 10 siguro 7 kasi hindi ko naman alam kung sino yung
mga nag viview ng account ko and as i said wala naman akong pake sakanila.

Student 8: Super conscious but wait, conscious ba ako no like uhm super conscious na to the
point na minsan lang ako mag post ng public minsan naka close friends na or like minsan naka
hide sa ibang tao ganyan or naka custom yung mga post and stories.

D. How do you decide what information to share publicly, with friends, or in more
restricted settings?
Student 1: Ahh.. like what I said earlier nga po is pinagiisipan ko po talaga yung mga eh popost

36
Privacy and Security Concerns of Nova Schola
Students on Facebook: Perceptions and Practices

research deep more if ever na ano kase….

information pag dating sa facebook account, instagram account or some more. So kahit yun,

Hahahaha

kunware school uhm dinodoble check ko muna talaga sya kasi baka may mali so ayun ganon

Student 7: Syempre if friends is okay naman mag share ng kung ano ano since they're trusted
naman uhm sa publicly naman is 50/50 because i never post anything na naka public.

Student 8: Nag decide, yun nga like what i've said earlier din pinopost ko lang yung something
na pictures lang na wala masyadong information about my self na tipong makukuha ng random
person yung pagkatao ko kasi kapag ganon is prone sa identity theft so yung mga pinopost ko
ay wala masyadong details like bank account and stuffs kasi may nakita akong nag post ng
drivers license so wag ganon, its too personal.

aking account so ayun lang.
